DHQ denies reports of massacre in Benue State

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed the report of the alleged massacre by the military in the Konshisha area of Benue, following the killing of 11 troops by bandits in the area.

The Acting Director, Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, in a statement on Friday in Abuja, described the report as spurious and misleading.

Nwachukwu explained that there had been incessant cases of communal clashes in recent times among the people of Konshisha and Oju on boundary demarcation.

The DHQ spokesman said that as part of efforts to resolve the crisis, the Benue government held meetings with stakeholders in local governments with a view to providing a solution to the problem.

According to him, appreciable progress has been made and a final date fixed for all stakeholders to meet in the disputed areas to demarcate the boundary.

“Trouble started on the eve of the final meeting during Easter holiday with reports that fresh fighting has broken out in the area.

“All along, 72 Special Forces Battalion has troops deployed on the Oju side of the boundary and troops of the battalion were on their way to replenish their colleagues on April 5, when they were attacked by bandits attend Bonta in Konshisha.

“The troops who were under command of a captain were seized at a checkpoint mounted by the so called Bonta Boys and taken into Konshisha forest where they were all brutally murdered.

“Not satisfied with killing the soldiers, the bandits proceeded to burn all the eleven soldiers and their officer beyond recognition while their weapons and ammunition were carted away,” he said.

The DHQ spokesperson disclosed that military reinforcements that were dispatched to Bonta the following morning also came under attack from close to 500 armed youths who had fully occupied Bonta at the time.

He said that the number of youths involved in the attacks suggested that the bandits could not be from Bonta alone, but were joined by bandits from other parts of Konshisha.

He said that the troops repelled the attack after more than four hours of intense fighting during which military helicopter provided close air support to ground troops.

According to him, 10 bandits are killed during the fight with the rifle of one of the Killed in action soldiers recovered from the bandits who fell casualty during the exchange of fire.

He said that there were no other civilian casualties in any part of Konshisha till date, apart from the initial 10 bandits eliminated by the troops.

PMAN Plateau Election: Elmore, BED Music Boss opens up

Top music producer and CEO of BED Music Africa, Elmore Hodus also referred to as “Lord of The Beat” is one of the top entertainment entrepreneurs who is taking Jos Plateau state to greater heights especially with the recently held Music talent reality show “Pitch Perfect Naija”.

In this interview, Elmore talks about his experience in the Jos entertainment industry and the funny incidents that happened when he ran as an aspirant for Governor Performing Musicians Employers Association Of Nigeria (PMAN) Plateau state chapter.

The Jos Entertainment Industry and BED Music Africa:

Elmore: The entertainment industry in plateau state is really getting bigger every day, the acts coming in, events, entertainers getting endorsed and signing contracts, and a whole lot of things. It’s really growing, and I thank God for that.
My drive in the state has always come from what others are doing outside the state, I went to Lagos and learnt a lot and I have promised myself that plateau state entertainment will be massively known around the world.

I went, I saw, and I must say I also conquered. So when I see a lot of talented youths running down the street and being used for social vices, cultism and other criminal activities it gets me sober, however, with the interest of youths in entertainment, things are changing for the better and I thank God.

The challenges are enormous, ranging from how to gain acceptance, information (radio, bloggers, etc), Funding, government support and many more… but we hope and believe things will change soon especially if everyone puts in the right effort.

About Pitch Perfect Naija:

Elmore: Pitch Perfect Naija is another brainchild of BED Music Africa which was launched in 2021. Pitch Perfect is a show targeted at promoting the entertainment industry and giving it a better shape as something to talk about especially for upcoming talents. The show is designed for musicians around Nigeria, whereby a specific number of auditioned artiste will be in a house for a specific number of weeks and battle themselves thereby showing their musical talent after which, the number of votes the individual have determines if u stay or get evicted before the grand finale.

The show recorded success in its median edition and is scheduled to hold yearly.

PMAN and election of new state executives:

Elmore: My experience at that time when I came out to contest as for the PMAN governorship aspirant was funny. Funny in a sense that the electoral officials were not straightforward, they actually have their plans, but we are watching.

Elmore

The electoral committee kept on changing dates and at last, we didn’t hear anything from them anymore. The next thing I heard and saw was that they chose some persons who they felt will do the work (I term that really funny). The election was never held unless they did without my knowledge.

Finally on the entertainment Industry:

Elmore: Moving forward I am still resolute in doing my best to make sure the entertainment industry goes to a better state with or without PMAN, I and the BED Music team have a lot of things that would be unfolded very soon.

Am very sure that in no time even Jos-based entertainers will buy cars and build houses with the money they made via their talent. It’s a box God is helping us to build and I won’t relent unless God says otherwise.

However, the Army has now revealed that the death toll is higher.

Yerima revealed that an officer and 10 soldiers were among the casualties; adding that they were on a stabilisation operation in Benue State. He stated that the troops were initially declared missing; which led to the deployment of a joint search and rescue team. The search party comprised army troops and personnel of Operation Whirl Stroke.

World Bank announces COVID-19 relief funds for 50 undisclosed countries by mid-2021

The World Bank will provide 50 countries with finance to buy COVID-19 vaccines by mid-2021, Mr David Malpass, World Bank Group President has said.

Malpass made this known on Wednesday, April 7, in Washington D. C. during a news conference at the ongoing 2021 Spring Meetings which began on Monday.

The World Bank president said that for the first time in the bank’s history, it topped 100 billion dollars in commitments over a 12-month period.

He added that there had been a big surge in growth in the group’s activities in response to COVID-19.

On addressing debt issues for developing countries, he said the group was working actively in collaboration with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the common framework that the G20 established for dealing with debt overhang and debt burdens.

“The G20 has, I think, in the deliberations this week, a call for the first creditor committee to be formed under the common framework.

“And the question is aimed at the middle-income countries, many of them face access problems to market-based finance and they also have rising fiscal deficits that are problematic.

“So, I think, again, I am going to fall back that transparency is very important. I think also we need to look for a more balanced relationship between creditors and debtors.”

Malpass said the challenge facing middle-income countries was collateralised debt; which made it very hard to restructure.

“We are making some progress on debt transparency; though collateralisation of debt remains a problem and non-disclosure clause by some creditors remains a problem.

“There’s full recognition of the debt problem facing the poor countries. I welcome that. I mentioned International Development Association (IDA) 20 earlier.”

Speaking about the effect of climate change on the recovery process of developing countries; the World Bank President said many of the poorer countries were dramatically affected by climate change; but were not major producers of greenhouse gas emissions.

He said four per cent of the global greenhouse gas emissions came from the poorest countries.

He, however, said that one way they could benefit was if the rest of the world was doing more; as it would reduce their vulnerabilities and also provide resources for them to adapt to the change.

“Second is the direct job aspect of adapting to changing climates; and also providing food security within regions.

“Those are going to be big and important from a job creation standpoint.

“The populations are growing of young people; and so we are looking for ways to have private sector climates that are inviting to new businesses and that allow job creation.

“Also, as countries being prepared for the recovery and allowing their economies to change to the post-COVID environment; which is going to be very different from pre-COVID.”
