Gumi: DSS allegedly arrests Islamic cleric in investigations into banditry

The Department of State Services has invited controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, for questioning.

According to a report by VOA Hausa on Friday, June 25, Gumi was invited by the DSS in the wake of an interview granted on ARISE Television on Wednesday.

Gumi had alleged that security agents played a role in the insecurity plaguing Nigeria by collaborating with the bandits who engage in killing and kidnapping for ransom.

The Nigerian Army had replied to Gumi, same day saying his statement is both sad and unfortunate.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig-Gen Onyema Nwachukwu, had said that “the sweeping allegation peddled by the scholar is not only sad and unfortunate but a calculated attempt to denigrate the Nigerian military and undermine the sacrifices of our patriotic troops, who are working tirelessly to restore peace and stability across the country.

“While the army will not attempt to excuse the possibility of black sheep amongst its fold, it must be stated unambiguously that it will not condone any form of sabotage or aiding and assisting the enemy by any personnel, as provisions for dealing decisively with such acts are crystallised in Section 45 (1) of the Armed Forces Act CAP A 20 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

Gumi is known for making controversial statements; regarding bandits and killer herdsmen.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that physical registration in the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will commence on July 19.

This was contained in a statement issued by the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu at a news conference; during the launch of the online portal for the CVR exercise in Abuja on Thursday, June 24.

Yakubu said that while the online registration would commence on June 28 nationwide; physical registration at its local government and states offices would commence on July 19.

The chairman said that the decision was made in consultation with stakeholders; in view of security concerns in the country.

He recalled that the INEC recently had attacks on its offices across the country; where they were burnt or vandalized.

Yakubu said that clearly, the aim of the attackers was to undermine the commission’s capacity to organize elections; as well as other electoral activities, including the CVR.

INEC reveals physical voters’ registration to commence July 19

INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that physical registration in the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will commence on July 19.

This was contained in a statement issued by the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu at a news conference during the launch of the online portal for the CVR exercise in Abuja on Thursday, June 24.

Yakubu said that while the online registration would commence on June 28 nationwide, physical registration at its local government and states offices would commence on July 19.

The chairman said that the decision was made in consultation with stakeholders in view of security concerns in the country.

He recalled that the INEC recently had attacks on its offices across the country, where they were burnt or vandalised.

Yakubu said that clearly, the aim of the attackers was to undermine the commission’s capacity to organise elections and other electoral activities, including the CVR.

“Luckily, only buildings, equipment and materials have been destroyed. Although the attacks have subsided, the commission is still deeply worried by the threat that they can pose to registrants and our staff during the CVR.

“As a result of this profound concern, the commission has made representations to government and had several discussions with stakeholders, including security agencies under the auspices of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) political parties, civil society organisations and the media.

“During these consultations, we shared our plans, hopes and concerns regarding the security threat that we currently face.

“From the consultations, the stakeholders reached a consensus that it is important for the commission to place a high premium on securing lives of registrants and staff, as well as the protection of the expensive registration equipment to be deployed for the exercise.

“Consequently, they advised that the commission should adopt a graduated approach to the CVR exercise by starting online.

“After appraising the situation, the exercise can then proceed physically at the state and LGA offices before finally deploying to all the 2,673 centres nationwide.

“Based on this advice, the commission decided to adopt a roll-out and roll-back approach to the exercise such that the registration centres will not only be accessible, but safe and secure.

“After careful consideration of these suggestions, the commission has decided to modify the schedule for the CVR as follows:

“There will be the commencement of registration only on June 28, through INEC registration portal https://cvr.inecnigeria.org or https://cvr.inec.gov.ng

“The schedule of appointments for online registrants and physical CVR, at INEC state and local government offices nationwide will commence on July 19,” Yakubu said.

The INEC chairman said that the registration portal would go live in the early hours of June 28.

Buhari scheduled to travel to UK on Friday for medical check

President Muhammadu Buhari will travel to London, the United Kingdom on Friday, the Presidency has said.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, on Thursday, June 24, in Abuja.

According to him, Buhari will be back in the country after the comprehensive checkups during the second week of July.

“President Muhammadu Buhari will proceed to London, the United Kingdom on Friday, June 25, 2021, for a scheduled medical follow-up.

He is due back in the country during the second week of July, 2021,” the statement read.

President Buhari’s scheduled trip to London comes almost three months since he last visited the United Kingdom for the same purpose.

He had travelled to the United Kingdom on March 30 for a routine medical check-up, as indicated in a statement by his media adviser.

The President later returned to the country via the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on April 15, at the end of the trip which lasted more than two weeks.

Amid speculations that the Nigerian leader may be sick at the time and had to embark on an emergency trip, the presidency stated that there was nothing of such.

“It is a routine medical check-up; the President has undertaken this with a set of doctors that he has retained over many years,” Garba Shehu has stated.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Mr Festus Keyamo, has revealed that over 400 thousand Nigerians have received N60,000 as part of the Special Public Works Programme launched in 2021 by the Federal Government.

Keyamo made this disclosure at the weekly Ministerial Media Chat at the Statehouse on Thursday, June 24.

During his press briefing, Keyamo said, “the scheme which is aimed at empowering Nigerians and cushioning the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, has seen 413,630 persons paid N60,000 each.”

According to him, some payments that have bounced back are owing to BVN challenges.

N24.817billion has been distributed to Nigerians so far; adding that an extension might be requested to meet a target of 500 thousand persons; for the first phase of the program, he clarified.

The minister also stressed that the program has been conducted across the 774 local governments; however, he noted that government initiatives of this nature can regrettably be hijacked by political leaders at the state levels; and for this reason, some resistance was encountered.

He asserted that President Muhammadu Buhari has and will continue to ensure transparency in all the Federal Government’s programmes.
