The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Friday, October 8, warned political parties participating in the November 6 Anambra State governorship election against violent campaigns that could affect the peaceful conduct of the election.
This was contained in a media address by the INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, during a meeting held at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.
He also announced 2,525,471 as eligible voters for the Anambra governorship polls.
He said: “I wish to appeal to all political parties and candidates not to exacerbate the feeling of insecurity in Anambra State through unguarded utterances and actions. This could compound the security situation and also make the work of the commission; political parties, as well as security agencies even more difficult.”
The INEC chairman said that such violent campaigns and unguarded utterances may also lead to voter apathy, explaining that “This moment calls for statesmanship and maturity hence the decision to convene this emergency meeting.
“We are confident that the outcome of this engagement will be productive; and helpful to the Commission and political parties; as we continue to prepare for the Anambra Governorship holding on Saturday 6th November 2021,” the INEC chairman stated.
He reminded the political parties that in May this year; the INEC state office in Awka was attacked which he said affected the main building; collation centre, as well as store which were completely or partially damaged.
“I am glad to report that we have fully recovered from that attack. The buildings have been completely reconstructed; and renovated in readiness for the election.
“All the non-sensitive materials have either been procured afresh or sourced from neighbouring states; and our zonal stores. We are working assiduously with security agencies; to ensure that such an attack does not happen again.”
However, he said, “security remains a major challenge to our preparations. For the political parties; these heinous attacks have truncated campaigns; making voter mobilisation and sensitisation impossible.”

Twitter has announced a new feature that the company has been working on; to inform people in advance that a conversation could be ‘intense’.
The company is currently testing prompts for its apps on Android and iOS, that would inform users about a conversation that could get heated.
The company says it is working on the feature as part of its efforts to “better support healthy conversation” on the platform.
These new prompts from Twitter sound like a long-overdue feature, and could prove very useful on the microblogging platform that (like every other open platform) is affected by harassment and abuse. “Ever want to know the vibe of a conversation before you join in?” the company’s support account tweeted on Wednesday.
The company says that the criteria for checking which tweets the prompts appear on could change as the company works on the feature.
The company shared an image of the feature in action, showing a tweet with multiple quote tweets and a reply under it, as an example of a tweet that might have received contentious replies.
Under the regular tweet action bar with the reply, retweet, like and share buttons, Twitter showed off the new prompt which says “Heads up” followed by “Conversations like this can be intense”.
According to the company, the service might consider the topic of the tweet and the relationship between the tweet author and the person replying to display the prompt.
Twitter also shared another view of a pop-up card that shows up on the same sample tweet, that tells users to “remember the human”; that “facts matter” and that “diverse perspectives have value”. It also contains a link to the Twitter Rules and has a button titled “Count me in”.
At the moment, it is hard to tell whether this prompt shows up when users tap the reply button or when they tap the previous blue prompt, and users will likely see this arrive in a future update.
It is important to note that while Twitter is currently working on this feature to improve conversations on the platform; it isn’t the first attempt by the company to add prompts to the service.
One such feature is already available to users – the prompt that shows up asking you if you want to read an article before retweeting.
Similarly, it has also been working on a feature that could ask users to stop and think before they tweet something offensive.
It remains to be seen whether this prompt is added in its current state; or whether the company refines the design or the criteria that will decide when it is displayed, before it is finally released to the public.

Facebook and its Instagram and WhatsApp platforms were down in parts of the world on Monday.
The company said it was “aware that some people are having trouble accessing Facebook app” and it was working on restoring access.
The company did not say what might be causing the outage, which began around 11:45 ET.
It is normal for websites and apps to suffer outages, though one on a global scale is rare.
Users reported being unable to access Facebook in California, New York and Europe.
Facebook is going through a major crisis after the whistleblower who was the source of The Wall Street Journal’s series of stories exposing the company’s awareness of internal research into the negative effects of its products and decisions went public on “60 Minutes” on Sunday.
Frances Haugen was identified in a “60 Minutes” interview Sunday as the woman who anonymously filed complaints with federal law enforcement that the company’s own research shows how it magnifies hate and misinformation, leads to increased polarization and that Instagram, specifically, can harm teenage girls’ mental health.
The Journal’s stories, called “The Facebook Files,” painted a picture of a company focused on growth and its own interests instead of the public good. Facebook has tried to play down the research.
Nick Clegg, Clegg, the company’s vice president of policy and public affairs, wrote to Facebook employees in a memo Friday that “social media has had a big impact on society in recent years, and Facebook is often a place where much of this debate plays out.”
