Reps moves to restrict public officials from using public funds for medical trips

A Bill for an Act seeking to sanction public officers from seeking medical help abroad with public funds has passed the second reading in the House of Reps on Wednesday, February 9.

The House also placed a N500 million fine and seven years imprisonment for any public official who violated the Act.

Rep Sergius Ogun (PDP-Edo) who sponsored the Bill, while leading the debate on the floor of the House of Reps in Abuja said the Bill would positively impact the lives and wellbeing of the people.

He said that the objective of the bill was to amend the principal Act so as to make provision for sanctions against any public officer who violates the provisions of the Act, especially section 46 of the Act.

He said that the Act forbid that any public officer should seek medical check-up abroad except on recommendation which must be approved by the Minister or Commissioner of Health

He added that the Bill has three clauses, which are: the enactment clause, the amendment clause of the principal Act, while clause three is the citation.

The Rep said the Amendment was born out of a desire to discourage medical treatment abroad at the detriment of indigenous health institutions.

He added that the need to revamp the poor state of the health care sector in Nigeria among other things is the reason for introducing the bill.

“It is no news that Nigeria’s health care system is in a deplorable state and needs urgent attention.

“There is a paucity of infrastructure, dearth of medical personnel, poor standards, and many other challenges that need to be addressed.

“The intent of this bill is to spur public officers to pay more attention to our health care sector and take drastic steps to develop and improve on the sector,” he stated.

Rep Ibrahim Isiaka (APC-Ogun) who had earlier seconded the bill, however, sought to withdraw his support, saying, ”I regret to withdraw my secondment of this Bill.”

But Rep Ahmed Wase, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Reps who presided over the plenary said that once a motion was seconded, there is no opportunity to withdraw.

Rep Toby Okechukwu (PDP-Enugu) in his contribution said that the Bill was only seeking to cure some mischief, adding that it is an offence to use public money for personal gain.

He added that no public officer should incur bills for Nigeria on health bases, stressing that the Bill was in all force patriotic and should be supported

Gov. Lalong Charges Citizens to Preach Peace on ‘Forgiveness Day’ (Photos)

Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong has charged the citizens to preach peace and exercise caution as they intensified campaign ahead of 2023 general elections in the state.

The state Governor further reminded politicians in the state to embrace peace messages, saying that without peace there will be no election.

Lalong disclosed this on Monday at the occasion of the commemoration of the ‘Forgiveness Day’ in Plateau state, held at the Garden of peace and forgiveness, Jos, Plateau State.

“I wish to specially appeal to the political class to tow the same line of the traditional, religious and community bodies by anchoring their political messages on love, peace, forgiveness and reconciliation.

“As the race towards the 2023 election intensifies, there is every need to exercise caution and responsibility in an attempt to get votes. Let us always remember that without peace, there will not even be elections or the positions we seek to occupy.

“I wish to again ask our citizens and the media to avoid the dissemination of messages stir anger and incite the people to violence, revenge and unforgiveness.”

Lalong explained that his administration inherited killings in most local government areas of the state which perished several lives and destroyed properties worth millions of naira.

“You will recall that some Local Government Areas like Bokkos, Barkin Ladi, Jos South, Riyom and Jos North were hot-beds of ethno-religious crisis and violent attacks where precious human lives and property were lost.

“I am glad to say that as at today, we have restored some level of calm and peace in those areas while work is continuing to ensure that every remaining obstacle to peace is removed.”

The Director-General of Plateau Peace Building Agency (PPBA), Joseph Lengmang said the occasion commemorates a day set aside by people from communities of different faith and ethnicity to deepened conversation on love and brotherhood.

“The essence is to reflect and talk to ourselves in a very honest and open-minded fashion; identifying points of differences and also points of convergence, especially as they pertain to issues of peace and security in our state.

“We have observed this day with a view to raise awareness on the healing and somewhat magical powers of forgiveness and reconciliation. I am aware that it is sometimes very difficult for people to comprehend the fact that in order for us to heal, then we must first, forgive all those who have hurt or offended us.”

Tinubu returns to Nigeria after UK consultations

National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has returned to Nigeria after a trip to the United Kingdom for consultations on his presidential ambition.

Tinubu returned to the country after a week’s consultation with stakeholders in the UK.

The APC stalwart touched down in Nigeria on Sunday, February 6, 2022 through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos. Equally important, his arrival was confirmed by his media aide, Tunde Rahman. Specifically, Rahman had shared a picture of the APC National Leader with the caption; “Asiwaju Tinubu on his return this evening from a trip abroad.’’

The former Lagos State governor, after being the subject of rumours for a long time, had recently signaled his intention to contest for the Presidency on the platform of the APC in 2023. Tinubu is looking to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari whose two-term tenure comes to an end next year.

Since he declared interest during a visit to President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House in Abuja last month; the Jagaban Borgu, as he is fondly called, has been on a nationwide consultation.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ade Omole, leader of the United Kingdom (UK) chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Nigeria Diaspora for Asiwaju (NDA) team in London has declared that Sen. Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the APC is in good health.

As a matter of fact, Omole made this known after meeting with Tinubu in London.

Alhaji AbdulRasaq Danjuma, Omole’s Personal Assistant, announced this in a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday in Abuja. He said the meeting between the APC leader and Omole was to consult with the NDA and critical APC stakeholders in the UK on the former’s 2023 presidential aspiration.

Also, Danjuma said that contrary to media reports, Tinubu was hale and healthy.

Endorsement of Brig. Gen. Sunday Sura by Plateau Youth for Good Governance

Press statement by Mr Yakubu Abubakar

Convener plateau youth for good governance plateau North.

3rd of January 2022

By 10 am at Vonke hotel and suites lamingo road plateau state Nigeria

Ladies and gentlemen of the press Good morning greetings to the leadership of the people Democratic party PDP plateau state stakeholders and the members of our great party PDP,

Let me start with the profile of a servant leader who God has blessed plateau state with and the next governor of plateau state insha Allah BRIGADIER GENERAL  JOHN SUNDAY SURA (RTD) was  Born John Sunday Sura, on February 8th, 1965, to the family of Da Sunday Sura and Mama Tarfusa Sura in Panyam Town of Panyam District in Mangu LGA, Plateau State. He began his academic pursuits at the Army  Children School, Shendam between 1972 and 1979, where he obtained the First School Leaving Certificate. He then proceeded to the, prestigious Nigerian Military School, (NMS) Zaria (formerly known as ‘The Boys’ Company) from 1979 to 1984, where he obtained his senior school leaving certificate.

Though John already had a knack for the military life from his early formative years as evidenced in his passionate membership of the boy’s brigade (where he attained the rank of Boy Staff Seargent), he was not one who would settle for anything less than the best and as such refused like some of his contemporaries to follow the easy way of simply picking up a Non-commissioned Officer’s conscription which was automatically guaranteed by his Nigerian military School certificate, he wanted to be in the elite officers cadre of the army.He therefore immediately enrolled for preliminary studies, at the Federal School of  and Sciences Suleja Niger State, before obtaining admission into the prestigious University of Jos, where he bagged a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Economics in 1990.

He then applied and got enrolled at the Infantry Centre and School Jaji in 1992 as an officer Cadet of the Direct Regular Course 3 and got commissioned in 1993 as a Lieutenant in the Army Finance corps marking the beginning of his military career.

Despite the rigors of a regimented Army career, he was to again proceed to the University of Lagos where he bagged a Master’s degree in Economics in 2002.  John, being from a very humble and Christian family, where the fear of God and the virtues of honesty, discipline and loyalty to constituted authority was Law, understood quite early in life that to attain greatness and to change his fortunes and that of his family would require uncommon hard work, steadfastness to duty and courage to follow uncharted courses, thus he saw his military commission not as an end in itself, but rather the end of the beginning.

Determined to rise to the pinnacle of his chosen profession, of service to the Federal Republic of Nigeria as an officer in Nigerian Army Finance Corps, he discharged his duties with single mindedness, moral rectitude and strict ethical compliance.

This ensured his steady rise in the ranks until his retirement in June, 2019, as a Brigadier General. While in service, his dedication to duty, stubborn insistence on ethical compliance, and use of innovative and creative best practices in financial services and personnel management within the various army formations and corps where he served earned several military and non-military recognition and accolades climaxing with his being awarded the Distinguished Service Star Medal.John has participated in, as well as superintended over many military operations within and outside Nigeria during his career, some of his more notable postings include:

This is evidenced in the pride with which he holds his cultural heritage as a mwaghavul man and for that reason, John’s bond with his home community has earned him the traditional recognition and conferment of a chieftaincy title as the Sardauna of Panyam by the Panyam Traditional Council. He is therefore a custodian and a key stakeholder of the traditional institution and indeed a proud son of the Mwaghavul nation.
