INEC charges youth to guard votes during 2023 election

Mallam Garba Attahiru-Madami, Independent National Electoral Commissioner (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Kwara, on Thursday, July 21, called on the youth to safeguard their votes in 2023.

Attahiru-Madami made the call at a symposium tagged: ”Youths and 2023 General Elections: Your Concern, My Concern”.

The symposium, which was held in Ilorin, was organised by the Stream 2, Top-up Students of the Department of Mass Communication, Kwara State University.

Attahiru-Madami was represented by Dr Tayo Adesina, Head of INEC Voter Education Unit.

He said that youths should vote at the elections and protect their votes at polling units.

”We have been asking Nigerians, especially the youth, to get their voter cards and come out to vote on election days.

”After voting, they should not leave the polling units, but stay back to guard their votes. This will help in ensuring credibility,” Attahiru-Madami said.

He noted that youths formed about 80 per cent of the Nigerian population, saying that their roles in elections could not be over-emphasised.

The INEC official urged the youth not to engage in buying or selling of votes.

Earlier, the Chairman of the symposium’s planning committee, Mr Solomon Akanbi, said that the event was a result of a theoretical cum practical-based course, Events Management, offered by the students.

”The course takes us through the process of planning, research, budgeting and execution of events.

”Having gathered the theoretical knowledge, we were saddled with the responsibility to initiate, plan, research, budget, and execute an event that is germane to the society, as part of the requirements for passing the course.

”It is my wish that the symposium will positively transform our attitude during elections for the sake of credibility and transparency,” he said.

Dr Isiaka Aliagan, Acting Dean of Faculty of Information and Communication Technology of the university, advised the youth to avoid unpatriotic politicians who would want to use them wrongly.

Tinubu Camp Hires ‘Unknown Bishops’ To Venue Of Unveiling of Kashim Shettima As Running Mate

Following the criticisms that trailed the Muslim/Muslim ticket of the Presidential Candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, the APC leader’s camp has gone to hire some Christians bishops to attend the formal unveiling of his Vice Presidential candidate, Senator Kashim Shettima.

The incident that caused stir at the entrance of the event as crowd taunted them and shouted “The bishops are here.”

Meanwhile the so-called bishops could not get seats at the main hall of the event as they were seen being ushered to the gallery which served as overflow.

Recall that many Nigerians have continued to express disappointment in the choice of a Muslim-Muslim pairing ticket by the APC flag bearer for the 2023 general elections.

They described the action as an attempt to trample on the religious rights of Nigerians.

Ikechukwu Ezeugwu Foundation Hands Over Renovated Science Laboratory Blocks to Enugu State Ministry of Education

Wednesday, 13th of July 2022 witnessed a heartwarming moment in Ovoko Boys Secondary School as one of their Old Boys, a pioneer student of the school and the Founder of Ikechukwu Ezeugwu Foundation, Hon. Ikechukwu Ezeugwu PhD, handed over revamped science laboratory blocks, through his foundation in collaboration with Later-day Saint Charities, to Enugu State Ministry of Education.

The event was graced by government officials, Igwes of all autonomous communities and other traditional rulers in Ovoko, many indigenous sons and daughters of Ovoko and as well as lovers of education who came to witness the commissioning ceremony of the project by the Enugu State Commissioner for Education, Prof Uche Eze.

The lawmaker in his address thanked the Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for his innovative mindset and unwavering passion for education. “From the years I have been with the former administration, I have come to understand and appreciate why Gov. Ugwuanyi has invested so much in education. Education requires enormous funding and Enugu state is ranking high when it comes to promoting science and technology.

As I speak, Enugu State Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB) is set to commence another round of infrastructural projects in our primary and post-primary schools, the Enugu State Scholarship and Education Loans Boards (ESSELB) has recorded immense success too in supporting intelligent but less privileged students in both local and overseas institutions of higher learning” he hinted. He took time to encourage the students of his alma mater, stressing that education remains the only key to success.

He briefly narrated his experience during their time in school and adviced that students should take their studies serious. “Ovoko Boys has produced elites and we will reach out to them so that all hands will be on deck as quality education does not come cheap and government cannot do it alone” he concluded.

The state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Uche Eze while commissioning the project expressed his heartfelt gratitude towards Hon. Ikechukwu Ezeugwu’s humanitarian contributions to the education sector, he went further and advised the students of Ovoko Boys to remain resolute in pursuing their academic goals.

The senior prefect of Ovoko Boys Secondary School, Master Iheanacho Obetta who began his appreciation note with avalanche of praises ignited by excitement, extolled and prayed for the founder of Ikechukwu Ezeugwu Foundation, “this kind of gesture has never happened since my entry into this school, Honourable Ikechukwu Ezeugwu has given our science laboratory blocks a face lift and we are very grateful to God for his intervention.

We pray that God will continue to repay him in double folds, may his cup never run dry, may it continue to overflow with God’s blessings” he prayed.

In his vote of thanks, the principal of Ovoko Boys Secondary School, Mr. Titus I. stated “Today is a remarkable day that cannot be forgotten in the history of Ovoko Boys, I can still remember vividly the day the majority leader of Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Ikechukwu Ezeugwu, one of the members of the Old Boys Association came to this school few months ago to ask me our problems in Ovoko Boys.

I answered him, Honourable, our school laboratory needs a total overhall, he said, this is almost three blocks, but I will do my best. He also noticed that my office was not painted and he painted it swiftly.

Today we are here to celebrate the successful completion as this project is being handed over to the Enugu State Government. My teachers and I cannot thank you enough, only the Almighty God will reward you.

OsunDecide2022: Ademola Adeleke of PDP wins Osun Governorship Election

Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party has emerged victorious in Osun’s governorship elections, defeating Governor Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress.

The results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission registered that out of the votes counted across the state, Mr Adeleke received 403,371, unseating the incumbent, who scored 375,027 votes.

The ruling party APC won 13 LGAs while the PDP won 17 LGAs

Mr Adeleke’s good showing had been apparent throughout voting hours across the southwestern state on Saturday.

Mr Adeleke’s win at Osogbo Local Government Area, receiving 30,401 votes out of the total 54,997 cast votes, while Mr Oyetola garnered 22,952 votes. He also made inroads into other opposition strongholds, including in Ile-Ife, where he pulled a surprise in Ife North Local Government Area.

The candidate’s victory was also buttressed by the inability of the ruling APC to garner as many votes as it anticipated from Iyiola Omisore’s stronghold in Ile-Ife. Mr Omisore used his popularity in Ile-Ife to deliver a slim victory for Mr Oyetola in 2018 after his third-party candidacy forced a run-off between the APC and PDP.

In this cycle, Mr Adeleke retained the support of his nephew David ‘Davido’ Adeleke and top PDP politicians like Atiku Abubakar, Bukola Saraki and some party governors. Messrs Nyesom Wike and Seyi Makinde shunned Mr Adeleke’s campaign over undisclosed grudges.

The opposition had touted the exercise as a harbinger of the 2023 general elections, in which Nigerians faced the question of whether to remove or retain the party in power.

The ruling APC had downplayed expectations about the message Nigerians are likely to hold from the election’s outcome, saying it should not be seen as a referendum on its overall popularity, which it maintained was growing.

Mr Adeleke, a former senator who was the PDP’s governorship candidate in the 2018 cycle, emerged as the party’s guber choice on March 10 after slugging it out with Dotun Babayemi.

Messrs Adeleke and Oyetola had sought the job in 2018. The election was initially declared inconclusive by INEC, and a rerun was slated on 27 September 2018. Mr Oyetola was declared the winner after the run-off. At the final count, Mr Adeleke polled 255,023, losing with less than 500 votes to Mr Oyetola, who scored 255,505 and was returned elected.

Mr Adeleke challenged the result as fraught with irregularities and ruling party tampering, but the Supreme Court affirmed Mr Oyetola’s victory on July 5, 2019.
