Petrol Marketers defy Buhari, raise pump price to N185 per litre

Petrol marketers in the country have ignored the federal government’s order to retain the fuel pump price at N165 per litre.

The marketers since Tuesday therefore unilaterally raised the fuel pump price from its official N165 per litre to N185.

This is coming as the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN), complained that the current price was no longer feasible.

A visit to filling stations in Awka, the Anambra State capital showed that some of the petrol stations raised the price as high as N190 and above per litre.

Two filling stations visited at the popular Aroma Roundabout sell at N190 and N195 per litre respectively.

Similarly, NIPCO filling station in Mabushi District of Abuja sells at N175 per litre.

The Public Relations Officer of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Chinedu Ukadike, while commenting on the price hike said it was not a surprising development because marketers need to cover their cost of operation which is not feasible with the official pump price of N165.

He maintained that oil marketers have been running at a loss for the past months and as a result, most stations closed down.

Ukadike explained that “Abinitio, we have also stated that there is no way marketers will buy products from private depots who are now selling at N170 and some at N167 depending on the area the tank farm is situated. These private tank farm owners have made it clear that they cannot sell at a government-approved price.

“Marketers cannot buy at N167-N170 and you expect them to sell at N165. This is why marketers have looked at the high cost of logistics because diesel is at N850 per litre now and to transport product from these wet areas to dry areas cost a lot of money.

“If you look at Abuja you will see that it does not have any depot that supplies petroleum products. All petroleum products in Abuja, Kano and other northern areas of the country are being taken from wet areas like Lagos, Calabar and others which have seaports.

“The products are all imported and Nigeria is heavily; dependent on imports because the refineries are not working. So the private tank farms are now used to; supply petroleum products to marketers. We are now left in their hands and whatever they sell to us, we will mark up our margins and sell to customers, the end users.”

According to him, pump prices would; vary from one filling station to another across the country because of where the product was; sourced by the marketer.

“While those (marketers) in Calabar might; buy at N170 or those in Port Harcourt at N162 or; those in Lagos at N163 depending on how the tank farm owner got his product, if you include cost of logistics and the numerous taxes government have; imposed on us, then the end result is what you are seeing.”

Buhari urges ASUU to reconsider stance on current strike action

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, July 11, in Daura, Katsina State revisited the issue of the prolonged strike which has left students at home for months, telling leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) that enough is enough.

The president called on ASUU to reconsider their position on the continued strike, expressing worry that the hiatus will have generational consequences on families, the educational system, and the future development of the country.

He stated this when he received some governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC), legislators, and political leaders at his residence.

According to him, the strike had already taken a toll on the psychology of parents, students, and other stakeholders, throwing up many moral issues that already beg for attention.

President Buhari noted that the future of the country rests on the quality of educational institutions and education while assuring that the government understands its position, and negotiations should continue, with students in lecture halls.

“We hope that ASUU will sympathise with the people on the prolonged strike. Truly, enough is enough for keeping students at home. Don’t hurt the next generation for goodness sake,” he said.

The president called on all well-meaning Nigerians, particularly those close to the leaders and members of the association, to intervene in persuading the lecturers to reconsider their position and the ripple effect on an entire generation and the nation.

President Buhari said students from Nigerian universities will be faced with the challenge of competing with others in a highly connected and technology-driven workspace, and keeping them at home only deprives them of time, skill, and opportunities to be relevant on the global stage.

“Colonial type education was geared towards producing workers in government. Those jobs are no longer there. Our young people should get an education to prepare them for self-employment. Now education is for the sake of education.

“Through technology, we are much more efficient. We should encourage our children to get an education, not only to look for government jobs,” he added.

President Buhari said resources should be channeled more into building infrastructure and operations of the health and educational sector, not to expand the bureaucracy to create job opportunities.

Nigerians react as Tinubu reportedly picks Shettima as running mate

A cross section of Nigerians have frowned at the reported decision of the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, to pick a northern Muslim running mate.

Tinubu reportedly picked Borno Central Senator, Kashim Shettima as his vice presidential candidate.

He had earlier submitted the name of Kabiru Masari to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as his place holder.

But, most Nigerians had frowned at the decision, while calling on Tinubu to pick a Christian from the northern part of the country as his running mate.

Political stakeholders had said picking a northern Christian was in the interest of fairness, equity, and balance.

But, following Tinubu’s alleged decision to settle for Shettima, some Nigerians have expressed divergent views on the development.

Tweets gathered by DAILY POST read below…..

Omokri: “According to @vanguardngrnews, El-Rufai lost out to Shettima. Muslim-Muslim ticket confirmed for the APC. Tinubu picked a man under whom #ChibokGirls were abducted. Well, well, well! 2023 just got a lot more interesting. Looking like a home run for Atiku Abubakar!”

Adeyanju: “After deceiving Northern APC Govs, Tinubu reportedly picks Shettima. ElRufai will be close to tears right now after his unending lobbying. So the Muslim-Muslim ticket thing is really happening?”

@firstladyship: “Tinubu picked Shettima, making the APC a Muslim Muslim ticket. We are not voting for ethnicity or religion. We are voting for MERIT. We are voting against Corruption, ASUU Strikes, Hunger & Poverty, National Grid Collapses, Mad Insecurity, Crazy Inflation, etc. AM I MAKING SENSE?”

@NabirAbduls: “I say NO to a Muslim-Muslim ticket and we can’t be saying No to a Muslim-Muslim ticket on ground of fairness, equity and justice and still support a northern candidate or APC.

This is more reason we all should support a southern candidate this time and that person is Peter Obi.”

@sobafemi: “The mere fact that BAT insists on going with a MUSLIM-MUSLIM ticket is why he is not suitable to lead Nigeria at this time when the nation has been so polarized by PMB’s government. Why would a “visionary” leader insist on what suits him IRRESPECTIVE of the implications?”

@Aloo_Tordue: “The battle has now been narrowed to Obi Peter vs Atiku Abubakar

“You cannot insult the sensitivity of Nigerians with an unpopular Muslim/Muslim ticket.

“God is making things easy for Obi/Yusuf.”

@onyiforlife: “Muslim-muslim ticket, insult to the Body of Christ.(Churches)

“Apc politicians don’t mean well for Nigerians. Equity, justice and fairness.”

Why I Accepted To Be Peter Obi’s Running Mate – Baba-ahmed

Baba-Ahmed, running mate of Peter Obi, Presidential Candidate of Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, has given reason why he accepted to team up with the former Governor of Anambra State.

See video of the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed

Video

Speaking when he was formally unveiled in Abuja on Friday, Baba-Ahmed said he accepted to be Obi’s running mate because he believes in his capacity to make Nigeria live up to its billing.

He added he also trusts that Obi would not mismanage the nation’s wealth, adding that the Labour Party’s outing as Anambra governor lends credence to that.

The Director General of the Peter Obi Campaign Organization, Dr. Doyin Okupe, who has been a Vice Presidential candidate placeholder, had stepped down on Thursday.

His resignation was to pave way for the substantive running mate from the northern extraction to balance the geopolitical and religious considerations.

The LP entered into merger talks with the Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s New Nigeria Peoples Party, (NNPP). However, the talks collapsed due to the inability of the parties to agree on who would be the eventual flag bearer if the merger arrangements had scaled through.

Obi’s candidacy has received massive acceptance across the country especially among the youths and has metamorphosed into a campaign known as #Obidient Movement with the slogan: #TakeBackNaija.

The LP presidential running mate, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed is a 46 year old academic, businessman and politician.

He was a member of the House of Representatives between 2003 and 2007, and was elected Senator for Kaduna North, in Kaduna State, in April 2011 running on the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) ticket, with a remarkable record for sponsoring important bills and motions in short time.

In 2011, Senator Baba-Ahmed established Baze University, an independent university located in Abuja, and Baba-Ahmed University, Kano (Awaiting License).

In 2015, Baba-Ahmed was appointed as Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT) of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Hope Alive Foundation, which campaigns for post-service economic survival of corps members who suffered permanent disability during service.
