Lalong pledges to ensure Tinubu’s victory as campaign manager

Simon Lalong, the governor of Plateau State and director general of the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Organization, promised to put forth a lot of effort to ensure the success of the APC presidential election in 2023.

Speaking to a cheering audience at the Yakubu Gowon Airport in Heipang, Jos Plateau State, Lalong revealed this on Thursday, August 4.

He warned Nigerians to keep religion out of politics and to support development, pointing out that the nation’s current problems were not caused by religion.

Lalong stated that his position as the campaign council’s director general demonstrates that Plateau people are respected in national politics and that the state will support the APC.

“Campaigning for Tinubu/Shettima Presidential election will not be a new thing for us in Plateau State, it is not a difficult task at all. It was the same difficulty we face in 2015 when some people said we will not win the election because we are in a Muslim party but we won that election.

“All I want is for us to cement our relationship, Nigeria is one nation. The challenges that we have are not from the Muslims or the Christians, we have common challenges and our duty is to unite the people for development.”

Lalong who is the APC candidate for the Plateau South Senatorial election said he will work assiduously towards the success of the presidential election, his Senatorial election, and the Governorship election in Plateau state.

“I am confident that APC will win not only my Senatorial election but the presidential, Governorship, and all other election in Plateau. It is my duty to work to deliver all APC candidates in the 2023 election.

“I have capable hands ground whom we will work together to deliver APC in the next election,” he stated.

Suspected arsonists raze down APC Chieftain’s house in Benue

The crisis rocking the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Benue State assumed dangerous dimensions as arsonists early hours of Wednesday set ablaze the residence of a chieftain of the party, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, aka Young Alhaji in Otukpo, Benue State.

The residence located at GRA, Otukpo was said to have been set on fire around 3:00 am by unknown arsonists.

The fire was said to have razed the front section of the building; which housed the security post and auxiliary buildings.

Alhaji Abubakar, a one-time senatorial candidate of Benue South had, a few days ago, displayed a mock coffin; with a condolence register of APC at the front of his house.

Some party members in the area interpreted this to mean the death of APC.

The coffin and condolence register was to express his displeasure with the leadership of APC in the state; particularly over the choice of deputy governorship candidate he (Abubakar) and others opposed to.

When contacted on the phone, Alhaji Abubakar confirmed the fire incident. Further, he said that he personally placed the mock coffin to let the leadership of the party know that something is wrong with the party in the area.

He said, “Yes, they set fire on my house in Otukpo. It affected the security house.

Asked why he displayed a mock coffin in the front of his house, Abubakar said; “I kept the casket to show that our party APC is about to die and there is a need to save it. It is just a message.

“Today is the fourth day the coffin was; placed in front of my residence. I am the one that kept the coffin there; because of the happenings in the party in my zone. I did that to show that if something is not done quickly, the party will call for oxygen.

“The crisis is over deputy governorship nomination; which some people like John Ochoga, Simon Shango, and Tilley Gyado are insisting on Samuel Ode while I; as the leader of the party in the zone is told that it should go to Apa/Agatu.”

The APC chieftain who said he was not leaving the party said that he was not suspecting anybody; “but whoever that has done it is not far from a member of my party in the zone.”

He added, “They burnt down my security house. The police and DSS are aware. I and my workers put out the fire.”

Fuel Scarcity: Federal Govt denies removing petroleum subsidy

The Federal Government says it has not removed subsidies on the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), otherwise known as fuel.

Chief Timipre Sylva, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, disclosed this while speaking with journalists on Monday in Abuja.

The minister spoke on the sidelines of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) stakeholders’ consultation forum on regulations.

The forum was organised by the authority to consider and review the midstream and downstream petroleum regulations to bequeath the industry with laws and policies to enable needed investment in the sector.

Sylva was reacting to the increase in the pump price of petroleum by marketers from N165 per litre to N169, N184 and N218 per litre depending on the area in Abuja and other states.

“I can tell you authoritatively, we have not deregulated. The government is still subsidising petrol prices. If there are increases in price, it is not from the government.

“It is probably from the marketers but of course, I will talk to the authority to ensure that they actually regulate the price. This is not from the government, we have not deregulated.

“But a lot is going on to ensure that the queues ended. As of yesterday, I noticed that the queues in Abuja are easing off,” the minister said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that there was fuel scarcity recently in Abuja and several other cities across the country.

Although the crisis in Abuja began in 2021 after the government announced plans to remove fuel subsidies, a major shortage hit major cities including Lagos in February.

This led to queues at filling stations and left millions unable to power their cars and the generators they rely on for electricity.

The discovery of high amounts of methanol in imported fuel also contributed to the scarcity then, as authorities tried to replace the off-spec product across the country.

The crisis lingered for months in spite of the Federal Government’s assurance that it had sufficient stock of petroleum products for distribution.

The scarcity continued in Abuja “on and off”, while black market sales thrived.

The Association of Distributors and Transporters of Petroleum Products (ADITOP) had told NAN earlier that the high cost of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) used by petroleum tankers and low freight rate were responsible for the current fuel scarcity in the FCT.

The Federal Government had since increased the freight rate of transporters by N10 which was a huge jump from N10.46 to an additional N10 and now N20.46.

INEC disowns online voter registration website

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has disassociated itself from an online website urging Nigerians to enroll in the Permanent Voters Card (PVC).

INEC said this in a statement by Mr Festus Okoye, the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, in Abuja on Monday, August 1, describing the website as fake.

“Barely 24 hours after the suspension of voter registration, INEC attention has been drawn to an online site urging Nigerians to enroll for voter card (PVC) registration,” Okoye said.

He said that the scammers claimed that the Federal Government has approved individual Permanent Voter Card (PVC) registration online, to avoid the unnecessary crowds at the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) centers.

“The Commission states unequivocally that the site is not linked to the commission and the link/portal is spurious and from a dubious source,” he said.

Okoye said that INEC was the only body constitutionally and legally mandated to conduct the registration of persons qualified to vote in any election in Nigeria and to update and revise the register when the need arose.

“The commission is solely responsible for organising, undertaking, and supervising national elections in the country and does not share this responsibility with anybody or organisation.

“Members of the public are strongly advised not to succumb to the antics of online scammers and should avoid such fake sites.

“The commission has concluded the Continuous Voter Registration nationwide and does not need to open an additional site or portal for the purposes of registration of voters,” he said.
