The commission stated that it approved the use of INECPRES (www.pres.inecnigeria.org) and its reactivation for interested applicants who wish to serve as ad hoc staff for the 2023 general election.

“The INECPRES is for registration of ad hoc staff (Supervisory Presiding Officers (SPOs)/ Presiding Officers (POS)/ Assistant Presiding Officers (APO)/ Registration Area Technicians (RATECHS) and RAC Managers for the 2023 General Election.”

It added that the help desk details were : Vanity number: 0700-CALL-INEC; and Email address: pres@inec.gov.ng, while phone numbers of specific officers per state are detailed on the portal.

INEC added that the INECPRES would be opened to the public on Wednesday Sept. 14 by 8 a.m.and would be closed on Wednesday, Dec. 14, by 8p.m.

“A link to the INECPRES is also available at the INEC website www.inecnigeria.org

“All applicants are encouraged to fill the registration forms online – The MOBILE APP (for android phone only) or web portal (using the laptop/PCs) to be eligible for consideration as ad hoc staff in 2023 General Election.”

The commission aside from listing the qualifications for each category of ad hoc to be recruited added that applicants must not be political party members.

“Applicants must not have demonstrated or expressed support for any candidate or party.

“Applicants must reside in the STATE selected.”

Meanwhile, Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 denied his campaign has received $150m in donations from diaspora sources.

A group under the aegis of Tinubu-Shettima Connect had urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to disqualify Obi over the alleged funding; adding that it violates the Electoral Act on campaign funding.

But speaking during a meeting with Nigerians in London; the former Anambra state Governor said the allegations were based on mere speculation.

“Nobody has given me anything,” he said. “That is speculation. What I need is not what they would give me. But what they would give Nigeria, because we need them to turn around Nigeria.

“This is the energy, the capacity that we need to turn around Nigeria. Every country that was turned around, was done by the diaspora. Even in the Bible, Joseph who left later came back to feed his people.”

Plateau NSCDC command says recent assault on woman is regrettable, Assures disciplinary measure on Officer

Following the incident which happened at the Nanmwa Junction, Abattoir area in Jos South local government area on Friday, September 2, that left one Mrs. Joy Owolabi, assaulted by an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) READ HERE

The Plateau state Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has come out to condemn the act, describing it as barbaric, unfortunate, regrettable, uncivilised and has since directed a full investigation into the matter to ascertain the real identity of the suspect.

The State Commandant, Alexander Bissa Barunde, made this known through a press statement made available to journalists in Jos on Monday 5th September and signed by DSC CM Longbit CDPRO, Plateau State Command.

The statement reads:

“The attention of Plateau State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has been drawn to a publication in the media about an unfortunate and regrettable incident of assault on one Mrs. Joy Owolabi, a shop owner around the Nanmwa Junction of Abbatoire in Jos, Plateau State allegedly by a personnel of the Corps.

Worried by this unfortunate incident, the State Commandant, Alexander Bissa Barunde, who described the incident as barbaric, unfortunate, regrettable and uncivilised has since directed a full investigation into the matter to ascertain the real identity of the suspect.

The State Commandant assured the general public that, he would invoke internal disciplinary mechanism of the Corps to deal with the officer involved in this babaric act against a harmless and helpless woman.

He condemned the act and wondered why an officer of the Command will condescend to the point of inflicting bodily harm on a woman under any circumstances.

Barunde affirmed the Corps’ commitment to the protection of lives and property of the citizens, stating that this is just an isolated case of an overzealous officer and the matter would be pursued to a logical conclusion and the concerned officer brought to book.

While apologising to the family of the woman concerned, he assured that the matter would not be swept under the carpet but that, decisive action will be taken against the culprit as soon as the outcome of the investigation is made available to him and the culprit identified.

He warned that he will not condone any indiscipline from any officers of the Command and charged them to remain civil in approach while carrying out their lawful duties.

He cautioned his personnel to be professional and to respect the fundamental human rights of the citizens because henceforth, any report of human right abuse by any civilian will attract very stringent punishment”.

Telecoms users breathe easy as FG suspends 5% excise duty

The Federal Government has suspended the implementation of the 5 per cent excise duty charge earlier proposed on telecoms services in the country.

Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Pantami, disclosed this when he inaugurated a committee to review the 5 per cent exercise duty, on Monday, September 5, in Abuja.

The government gave a hint on July 28, that the five per cent would be added to the already existing 7.5 per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) on telecoms services.

Speaking during the inauguration of the committee, Pantami said that President Muhammadu Buhari granted his prayer for the immediate suspension of the 5 per cent excise duty.

Pantami said: “It is because of this that the president had granted my prayers. He approved that a committee is constituted to look into the matter carefully and advise him accordingly.

“The president has appointed me to be his eyes and ears in the sector. It is my responsibility to ensure we are just and fair to the operators, government, and most importantly the consumers.”

The minister, who serves as the Committee’s Chairman further told the members how he explained to the president the effect of the excise duty on the sector.

“Of recent, it was announced that some of our respected brothers and sisters kick-started the process of introducing excise duty in the telecoms sector.

“Based on the constitution and is the representative of Buhari in the sector, I rejected that wholeheartedly.

“I formalised my position and explained to him in a letter that could be referred to as a petition because excise duty was usually fixed on luxury products

“I told the president in a letter that if care is not taken, that attempt will destroy the digital economy sector that is becoming the backbone of our economy,” he said.

On why he kicked against the excise duty, he said in spite of the achievements of the sector, it also had its challenges, which could be a barrier to its development in the next few years to come.

“As of today, the ICT sector is overburdened by so many categories of taxes to the extent that there are 41 categories of taxes at the federal and state level, particularly in the telecom sector.

“Besides, these taxes are multiple taxes. The same taxes being collected at the federal level is also what the states are insisting be paid to them.

“If care is not taken, this is what will jeopardise the achievements and gains that we have recorded so far in the sector,” the minister said.

Pantami added that prices of products and services in other sectors had increased significantly apart from the telecoms sector in the last three years, because of the economic situation in the country.

Liz Truss becomes new UK Prime Minister

Liz Truss will become the next prime minister of Britain.

The British Conservative Party announced on Monday that its members have picked Liz Truss to succeed Boris Johnson.

Truss, 47, will be the UK’s third female prime minister following Theresa May and Margaret Thatcher.

She also comes into office as Brits tighten their belts in response to double-digit inflation and skyrocketing energy prices.

Truss vowed to deliver a “bold plan” to cut taxes, grow the UK economy and deal with spiralling energy costs.

“I will also deliver a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy. I will deliver on the energy crisis, dealing with people’s energy bills,” Truss said as she was announced on Monday.

Rishi Sunak, a former chancellor of the Exchequer whose resignation in July started the unceremonious removal of Mr. Johnson, lost to Ms. Truss. Her win was largely anticipated in recent weeks when she acquired a commanding lead in the polls; with a margin of 57.4 percent to 42.6 percent.

Following his loss in the final Conservative leadership ballot, former finance minister Rishi Sunak tweeted his support for Liz Truss.

“Thank you to everyone who voted for me in this campaign,” Sunak Tweeted.

“I’ve said throughout that the Conservatives are one family. It’s right we now unite behind the new PM, Liz Truss, as she steers the country through difficult times.”

Recall that Boris Johnson was compelled to announce his resignation in July after being embroiled in a scandal for months. Meanwhile, he will fly to Scotland on Tuesday to present his resignation to Queen Elizabeth.

Plateau Peace Building Agency receives Ethiopian Region Parliamentarians on Study Visit

The Director General of Plateau Peacebuilding Agency (PPBA), Mr. Joseph Lengmang played host to Members of Parliament from the Oromia Region of Ethiopia who were on a study visit to Plateau State.

The visit of Oromia Parliamentarians was facilitated by the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue, led by its country director Dr. Chris Agboha, who said they were at the Agency to exchange ideas and also learn from what the Agency has been doing, being that the Agency is the first of its kind in Nigeria as an institutional framework established by law to respond to the challenges of peace and security in the state.

The Director General, Plateau Peace Building Agency,  while receiving the Parliamentarians from the Region of Oromia, said he was quite elated receiving Palamenterians from another country which was the first for the Agency, as it provides an opportunity for both to learn and share experiences.
He acknowledged the role and significance that Ethiopia played in the pan-African Struggle, the evolution of politics, and appreciated the place of Ethiopia in the history of Africa.

Mr Lengmang stated that the Plateau State Peace Building Agency (PPBA) was set up by the current administration of Governor Simon Lalong with a foresight to institutionalize conflict prevention and peacebuilding which brought into existence the Agency with a mandate to promote the culture of peace and harmonious coexistence, among the various ethnoreligious divides on the Plateau.

He said the Agency was set up by a Legal framework and a sub-national unit in Nigeria with credit to the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue who started up early conversations for the setting up of the Agency and also guided the Agency in its ‘infant years.
He said the Agency works through strategic partnerships with state and non-state actors, they also coordinate conflict resolution and peacebuilding interventions of stakeholders who work in and around the issues of Peace Building and conflict prevention.

“Plateau Peace Building Agency is  non-partisan, non-religious and non-ethnic, and our work is all geared towards building a safer and more stable plateau that is at peace with itself and the rest of the world.”

“The Agency works in different communities with the support from government and other organizations, as the Agency has made some significant progress over their years as a result of our various interventions, with some modest achievements that are allowing the agency to further build on them which portends a future for a peaceful and harmonious society regardless of what has happened in the past.”

“We have taken the right step and for that reason, we haven’t seen the kind of violent conflict that existed in the past on the Plateau because of the deliberate strategies that the peacebuilding Agency has put in place, working with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Traditional Institutions, with Religious Institutions, with community-based Organizations, with international non-governmental organizations to craft the kind of peace that we want to see.”

“Government alone will not be able to deal with issues of conflict as such the Agency has come in to Put the people in the center of discussions, having a dialogue in a very systematic fashion, listening to people regardless of the how hurting it might be and focusing on what unites us as opposed to what divides us holds some promise for our future,” He said was lessons to be taken from Agency, as when faced with realities of what can be done to make the difference without rallying absolutely on the instrumentality of government.

About the Farmer-Herder conflict, Lengmeng stated that with serious interventions and massive investment from the government and other NGOs in transforming the conditions that engender those conflicts, the Agency has been able to make progress and the situation has gone down because of the understanding and mutual cooperation that can be witnessed.

Responding on behalf of the Members of Parliament from the Oromia Region of Ethiopia, Seada Abdurahman the Speaker of the Parliament said she was grateful for the insightful discussion as it will add to the compendium of what they have gained since arrival in Nigeria.
She further acknowledged the efforts and achievements of the Agency since its inception especially the continuous collaboration to achieve its mandate.

The Members of Parliament from the Oromia Region of Ethiopia also paid a courtesy visit to the Plateau State Governor and also a working visit to the Plateau state House of Assembly.

The delegation had a robust interactive session with the Director General of the PPBA, Mr. Joelengs Joseph Lengmang, the Management and other Team Leads of the agency, with discussions centered around experiences in inter-ethnic tensions; inter-play of politics and conflict, and the farmer/herder clashes, amongst others.
