The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has posted a countdown clock on its website for the expiration of the N200, N500, and N1,000 notes now in use on January 31, 2023.
The Naira redesign policy, which the apex bank had stated, called for the printing of new notes in the N200, N500, and N1,000 denominations for the three circulating Naira notes.
The formal launch date for the circulation of the new naira notes had been established by the CBN for December 15, 2022.
It said that from December 15, 2022, to January 31, 2023, both the old notes and the new notes would be accepted as legal money.
The highest bank said the old notes would cease to be legal tender from the January 31, 2023 deadline.
The Central Bank of Nigeria asked Nigerians to deposit the denominations that would be redesigned at their respective banks, noting that the banks would be open for business every week from Monday through Saturday. Additionally, it stated that bank charges on deposits had been stopped for the time frame and that there was no cap on the amount that may be deposited at one time.
Godwin Emefiele, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, had claimed that people were hoarding naira notes, and statistics showed that more than 80% of the cash in circulation was not kept in commercial banks’ vaults.
He described as unacceptable the current situation – of September 2022 – in which a total of N3.2 trillion was in circulation, out of which N2.73 trillion was outside the vaults of the banks.
The naira redesign policy of the CBN got the nod of the Nigerian Senate last week with a resolution to provide legislative support for the policy, while insisting of providing an oversight for the policy.
Following recent attacks in some villages of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State which led to the loss of lives and destruction of properties, Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong has met with stakeholders from the local government to find solutions to the problem.

Governor Lalong while addressing the stakeholders which include traditional rulers, representatives of Ron and fulani, security agencies, youth leaders, local government officials and elders, the Governor said he was distraught by the sad development which was a major setback to the restoration of peace in Plateau State.
He sympathised with the people for the loss of lives and properties lost during the attacks and warned that the Government will do everything within its power to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Governor Lalong reiterated that nobody has the right to kill anyone or take the law into his hands to address any grievance or injustice whether relating to destruction of crops or killing of cows which are reported to be the main source of tension in the area.
The Governor said he has convened the stakeholders meeting to hear from all sides on how to address the spade of violence in the area that is a matter of concern the people and the Government. The submissions he said will assist the security agencies and government to further carry out thorough investigations.
Lalong said while the Government will play its part in ensuring that security prevails in Bokkos and entire State by going after criminals no matter their background, the people must be willing to expose criminals within them and also work together for peace and security.
The meeting later went into a closed door session where the Governor asked the stakeholders to speak freely and frankly to assist the Government find solutions to the immediate and remote causes of the attacks.
At the end of the closed door meeting, the Governor assured the stakeholders that their submissions will be acted upon while a committee will be set up comprising of representatives from Ron and Fulani communities who will work together and bring up any security threat for immediate action.

Mr. Alfred Mashat Makut, the Governor’s Special Assistant on Information Communication Technology in a press release on Friday berated Lalong for placing his political interests above the safety of citizens.
His resignation followed an overnight raid in the northwest of Bokkos which killed one person and injured seven others according to witnesses.
The attack by 300 mercenaries who swarmed over Folloh, a village of more than 1000 people saw more than 20 houses razed.
Hours prior to the attack, 100 armed terrorists according to residents killed 11 people in another village 2miles east of Folloh.
In an evening invasion of the market town of Maikatako, described by Governor Lalong as worrisome, several houses and a Church were razed.
Lalong in a statement on Wednesday afternoon called securities to hunt down the killers.
But Makut who is also a rap singer and blogger known by the stage name Seemo D’black C-zar said the Governor has not done enough to secure the State.
“Our Government has failed us,” he said.
“On the day of APC campaign FLAG-OFF in Jos, Maikatako village in Bokkos was attacked at night by the same marauding Herdsmen.
“My dear Governor and Principal, Governor Simon Bako Lalong, whom I have supported with everything I have when it comes to political support, again, did not abandon whatsoever political engagement he had to visit my people, despite how we tried to reach out for that to be done.
“The APC as a party that I am a member did not honour the dead and their families of the aggrieved by cancelling any further political activity to honour the dead or even send a high powered delegation from the PCC to console with the good people of Bokkos,” he added.
Makut who is a native of Bokkos recalled previous attacks which he said were ignored by the Governor.
“On the 18th of July,2016 our paramount ruler, Saf Ron/Kulere La’azarus Agai was murdered in cold blood. Seven years after no one has been arrested or brought to book despite all the protests, pleas, litigations and concerns of the people of Bokkos. I was one of the Youths that led a protest to little Rayfield on 20th July,2016 and ended up been arrested with two of my Brothers.
“On 28th January 2020- Gunmen suspected to be herdsmen attacked Kwatas Village killing 15 persons. I wrote an epistle lamenting why Governor Simon Bako Lalong will not visit the family of the Victim or even attend the mass burial.
“I will longer be politically correct while the enemy daily makes in-roads in a calculated ethnic cleansing. We can only go to campaign to people that are alive and not people in their graves,” he said, calling justice for victims of attacks.
He said, “my people are mourning,my people are in tears, the land is spilled with blood, my people want Justice and my people must get justice.

What first got you into music?
It is simple a fact that talent first of all is the force behind the very reason why I ventured into music, plus secondly, the love of it. Because I can vividly remember growing up, I had a very strong and steady connection to sound and not just any sound but good sound, so that really brought folks connecting to me at a tender age in regards to music, which translated into who and what I am right now.
What are your hobbies?
As I am an easy-going person, my soul is interested in travelling, listening to music, making new friends, watching movies, and also research. The research is basically research that relates to life in its totality and how to transform it
Who or what inspired you to make music?
Actually, there’s a Who and a What that inspired me to make music, let me begin with the what part which is the most important and also the integral part of my music. You see the social imbalance created by a powerful few created a perspective at which I look at life and how it should be. Then the activism of 2pac now brings to The Who inspired me to make music. So, The What is the social imbalance and the Who is 2pac. These 2 are the great source of inspiration for me.
When and where did you start your music career?
J-town is my birth place and also is where the whole music career thing kicked off. It all started from a group of 6 before I went solo, and to put a figure to the years about it, I would say it dates back to some 18 years ago.
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
Frankly speaking, if I am to describe the kind of music I make in a single word, I’d say conscious, straight to the head like a needle to the pole
What is your creative process like?
My creative process plays out in 2 parts, sometimes its spontaneous, at a spot, the bars keep dropping and most times, it’s a calculated and intentional thing. The careful placement of energy in regards to observation just so I could bring out a truth that should stick
Who would you like to collaborate with the most?
The one person I would really love to collaborate the most with is the rapper from Ghana, called Manifest. Reasons are, his skill, and his philosophy.
How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
The internet as a tool has greatly transformed the music business in so many ways, like bringing to the artist and the management, the knowledge of demographics in target audience, decline and growth. It has also made it easy to market music, and merch. On a large scale, the internet has made it very easy for the artist to have a direct relationship with the fan base.
Which is your favorite song?
There are a lot of good songs that I vibe to, but to single out one which relates more to me, I’d say changes by 2pac Shakur.
Which famous musicians do you admire?
There are a few who are deceased like Bob Nesta Marley, our own legendary Fela and 2pac Amaru Shakur just to mention but a few. Their craft has been a great source of inspiration to me. Then I have a few alive like J.Cole, Nas, Falz, and MI.
What is the best advice you’ve ever been given as it relates to music?
“When good music comes to my soul, I should do well to create it and put it out, not to restrict my sound to just a particular genre.” For music has no boundaries, as it seeks to explore and experiment every sound, so I can mine the gold stored up in all genres.
If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?
If ah could change anything about the industry, I would change the fact that an artist would have to travel to a particular zone in the country to sell his product. I would give power to every corner of the country to grow its market, so every artist would grow where he/she is.
Tell me about your favorite performance?
This actually happened some years back, at a street show (Festival) which is well known in Jos called Aje-Jenta, it’s an event that gives artist from different areas in Jos the opportunity to come showcase their craft. The performance was a shutdown because the audience were thrilled to see me come on such a stage, plus I picked that performance as a dope one for me because the street was receptive in all angles. So, I knew the hard work put in was not in vain, it was actually creating impact as it is designed to.
Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
In 5 years’ time, I see myself in my desired position as that musical ‘ICON’ that can positively influence the decision making of the music industry, and not stop there but become that one person that other upcoming artist would look up to for inspiration.
What are some of the challenges you face as an independent Artist?
Being an independent artist has its challenges. In my place as an independent artist, I would say its like living on borrowed oxygen, one is not promised the next good vibe because of financial constraint and also closed doors in regards to favors that should propel the artist to a higher height. Plus, on the other hand, one doesn’t have a platform with mechanisms to handle some issues for growth like sourcing for shows and certain important negotiations.
What advice do you have for upcoming artist looking up to you?
The advice I’ll give to any upcoming artist looking up to me is that first; at every point in life, commit all you do into God’s hand. Secondly, be passionate about the grind even when it seems as if nothing is working and finally, humility should be the wheel you slide on. Humility will present to you people of substance that’ll transform your musical growth in all ramifications.
