Kwankwaso debunks reports of withdrawal from presidential race for Atiku

Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate for the New Nigeria Peoples Party, has declared that he will not retire in favor of Atiku Abubakar, the candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party.

Major Agbo, the NNPP’s spokesman, revealed this in an interview on Sunday, November 13, and criticized a claim that northern leaders were pressuring Kwankwaso to resign for Atiku.

Agbo questioned, “How can somebody come out and say Kwankwaso should step down for Atiku? “ in response to the news. No, Atiku should resign instead.

He asserts that Kwankwaso is in the running to win and that he will become the nation’s next president.

The NNPP spokesperson did not, however, rule out the possibility of alliance talk, which he said would be done on its terms.

When asked about the update on the alleged talks between his party and the presidential campaign team of the Labour Party, Agbo dismissed the report.

“Go and ask Okupe (Dr Doyin Okupe). He was the one who scuttled the first alliance talk because he came into the negotiation with his ‘unusual’ agenda that Obi should be made the president. How can Obi be president over Kwankwaso?”

Also, the National Chairman of NNPP, Rufai Alkali, also shared the same position as Agbo when he described the report as untrue.

He said, “It is completely false. We are not surprised at all that this story is coming out this way at this time. All discerning Nigerians have been following the pattern.

“They first said our candidate was going to step down for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. When we debunked it, they said the NNPP had surrendered to the Labour Party and Peter Obi. When we explained the circumstances, they kept quiet.

“Next, there was an attempt by our elders at the Arewa Consultative Forum dialogue for Presidential candidates to present their manifestos. We agreed with the organizers but we realized that there were forces working to undermine the process by using the platform to endorse a Northern candidate. When Kwankwaso did not appear, that project collapsed.”

23 INEC Staff Face Sanctions Over Illegal Voters’ Registration

Twenty-three staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Kwara State are awaiting sanctions for their involvement in illegal voters’ registration in the State.

The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Garba Attahiru Madami, disclosed this in Ilorin at a stakeholders’ meeting with members of registered political parties contesting the 2023 general elections, with security agencies also in attendance.

He said the current total voting population of Kwara state is 1.6m.

He decried poor response of the people of the State to collection of permanent voter cards, saying from 2011 to 2019 the commission has a total of 233,856 uncollected voter cards.

Madami explained that out of the figure of uncollected voter cards, only 20,752 were collected as at October 2022, with over 193,000 remaining uncollected.

He explained that the stakeholders’ meeting was necessary as the first step towards ensuring hitch-free elections in the State next year.

Madami vowed to protect the electoral process by conducting free, fair, transparent, peaceful and credible elections which will be acceptable to Kwarans.

In his remarks, the State Police Commissioner, Paul Odama, warned politicians against vote buying which the electoral law frowns against.

He advised them to engage in issues-based campaigns, shun thuggery and damage to billboards of opposing political parties.

Odama also cautioned politicians to desist from feeding their supporters with hard drugs to guarantee violence free campaigns and elections in the State.

Kwankwaso dares Northern Oligarchs, refuses to step down for Atiku

Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has allegedly refused to step down for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as some self-interested Northern leaders and forces are moving to ensure that the region presents a consensus presidential candidate ahead of the upcoming general elections.

In separate conversations, sources revealed that many leaders in the North want former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, as the region’s consensus candidate.

“Our people have resolved to adopt a consensus candidate for 2023, and the person they have chosen is former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the PDP candidate,” a source told New Telegraph.

According to the source, who is a prominent member of the Northern Elders Forum, prominent leaders in the North have been putting pressure on, Kwankwaso, to drop his bid for the Adamawa State-born former Vice President.

“I can tell you that our leaders in the North have; commenced moves to pressurize Senator Kwankwaso to drop his presidential bid for Atiku Abubakar; in the interest of our people,” the source said.

Findings within the Kwankwaso camp revealed; that the former Kano State governor had remained adamant about the pressures being; pilled at him, with a vow to go ahead with his bid.

“Madugu (Kwankwaso’s sobriquet) has been; bombarded with calls and visitations from prominent leaders in the North; to drop his bid for Waziri (Atiku’s traditional title) but he; (former Kano governor) has remained adamant,” a source within the NNPP said.

According to the source, Kwankwaso’s refusal might not be; unconnected to the circumstances that led to his exit from the PDP, which people close to him said was; very unpalatable.

“It would be; difficult for Madugu to support the PDP; because of the way some people close to Alhaji Atiku treated him when he was there, so much a possibility is; very remote,” the source said. When prodded to be; more categorical on the options open to the former minister, the source said, “I think even if he drops his bid, the only person Madugu would back is; Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.”

Buhari congratulates 8 Nigerian-Americans on electoral victory at US Midterms

Eight Nigerian-Americans who won in the US midterm elections have received congratulations from President Muhammadu Buhari.

Segun Adeyina, Gabe Okoye, Solomon Adesanya, Tish Naghise, and Phil Olaleye won their seats in the Georgia State legislature as State Representatives in respective Districts, according to a statement made on Wednesday, November 9, by the president’s media adviser, Femi Adesina.

Similarly, Esther Agbaje was re-elected as Minnesota State Representative in District 59B; Carol Kazeem was elected to represent Pennsylvania State in District 159; while Dr. Oye Owolewa was re-elected to the United States.

President Buhari commended the Nigerian-Americans for their essential support and partnerships with organizations linked to the goals and objectives of Nigerians in Diaspora associations in the United States over the years, and he wished them a fruitful term in office.

He reiterated his unwavering support for every Nigerian succeeding at home and abroad; noting that their contributions will always be remembered and honored.

President Buhari also disclosed that Nigerians who succeed in good causes are assets to the country and the continent.

Meanwhile, Nigeria has been classified as a high-risk nation for money laundering and terrorism funding by the Basel Institute on Governance.

Nigeria was ranked 17th out of 128 countries with a score of 6.77 out of 10.

Its study, “Basel AML Index 2022: 11th Public Edition – Ranking money laundering and terrorism funding concerns around the world,” included the rating, on Tuesday, November 8, 2022.

The Basel Institute on Governance is an independent, worldwide non-profit organization devoted to preventing and combatting corruption; as well as other financial crimes and strengthening governance around the world.

The Institute developed and maintains the Basel AML Index.

Specifically, the report further noted; “Countries with high risks of ML/TF often suffer from high risks of environmental crime.”

It was also noted that many countries including Nigeria were not doing enough to tackle the issue of money laundering and terrorist financing.

The report read in part, “When it comes to tackling dirty money; most countries are taking one step forward and four steps back; remaining too many steps behind criminals seeking to launder illicit funds.

“Eleven years since the first publication of the Basel AML Index; a leading independent ranking of money laundering and terrorist financing risks in countries around the world; progress in anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing remains paralysed.

“The average global money laundering risk according to this year’s Index is stuck at 5.25 out of 10, where 10 is the maximum risk level.”
