97-year-old former Nazi secretary sentenced for involvement in more than 10,000 murders

A 97-year-old former secretary at a Nazi concentration camp has been convicted for her role in the murder of 10,505 people during the Holocaust, in what could be the final trial of its kind.

Irmgard Furchner worked as a stenographer and typist at the Stutthof camp near Gdansk in Nazi-occupied Poland from 1943-1945.

She was sentenced Tuesday to a two-year suspended sentence, according to a spokesperson at the court in Itzehoe, northern Germany.

As Furchner was an adolescent at the time of the crimes; the 97-year-old woman’s trial took place before a juvenile court and her sentence will see her placed into juvenile probation.

Furchner went on the run weeks before her trial was due to begin, but authorities found her after several hours. Proceedings eventually began late last year.

Tens of thousands of people were held in brutal conditions at the Stutthof camp. According to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum more than 60,000 died there.

Stutthof mainly held non-Jewish Poles, as well as a large number of Jews from the Polish cities of Warsaw and Bialystok and from Nazi-occupied Baltic states, according to the museum.

Germany has raced to bring the perpetrators of Nazi war crimes to justice in recent year. But experts say that only a small proportion of those involved ever faced a court.

Okupe sentenced to two-year imprisonment over money laundering

The Federal High Court Abuja has found Dr Doyin Okupe guilty of receiving over N200 million cash from former National Security Adviser (NSA) Col. Sambo Dasuki and also sentenced him to two years imprisonment.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu while delivering judgement on Monday, December 19, held that the action of Okupe, who is the first defendant in the suit filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), violated the Money Laundering Act. He was found guilty on counts 34 to 59 of the charges.

The court sentenced Okupe, who is the Director-General of the Peter Obi Campaign Organisation, to two years imprisonment on count 34 with an option of a fine of N500,000.

The court also sentenced him to two years imprisonment on counts 35 to 59 with an option fine of N500,000. The option of fine is to run consecutively on each count while the sentence is to run concurrently. The sentence to run from the day of delivering the judgment.

The court noted that it refrains from making any custodial order, but the convict is the property of the state.

Meanwhile, Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture, on Monday, December 19, 2022 revealed that following the suspension of the microblogging service, Twitter had discussions with the Nigerian government.

Mohammed provided this clarification in response to the assertion made by a former senior Twitter official.

The Twitter official had stated that Nigeria and the firm had not discussed the ban from the country’s cyberspace. The minister called the attempt to deny what happened between the two parties “ludicrous”.

He made this known while speaking at a news conference in Abuja.

After President Muhammadu Buhari’s deleted tweets telling the Indigenous People of Biafra that they “would be dealt in the language they understand,” the Federal Government of Nigeria (FG) formally prohibited Twitter from operating in Nigeria on June 5, 2021.
