Plateau State House of Assembly complex sealed by Security operatives

Plateau State House of Assembly complex sealed by Security operatives

Reports indicate that security personnel and a team of anti-riot policemen have sealed off the Plateau State House of Assembly complex today Wednesday 5th April 2023

The security personnel were said to have arrived at the assembly complex by 5a.m on Wednesday, and barricaded the main entrance to prevent anyone from accessing the premises, following a recent takeover by embattled Speaker, Rt Hon Nuhu Abok who resumed plenary on Tuesday after being reinstated by the court.

The Plateau Police Spokesperson, DSP Alfred Alabo, said that the move was to forestall any breakdown of law of order around the assembly.

”We learnt that supporters of some politicians will be coming around the assembly to protest.

“If the politicians’ supporters come around, it is going to affect traffic and it may lead to breakdown of law and order.

“In order to save lives and property, we took this action so that we can control security arrangements within the Plateau House of the assembly area.

“If nothing happens, the security will be relaxed and everything will return to normal,” he explained

Recall that Abok Ayuba who was impeached on October 28, 2021, was reinstated by the Plateau High Court on Monday and went on to resume duties on Tuesday and presided over a plenary session that was said to continue today.

But Ayuba’s successor, Yakubu Sanda and 12 others on Tuesday filed an appeal and stay of execution thereby holding on to the former impeachment.

The Drama continues with both Sanda and Ayuba laying claim to the speakership of the Plateau state House of Assembly.

Gov Lalong Swears in New Judges

Gov Lalong Swears in New Judges in Plateau State

Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong says he is leaving behind a robust and vibrant Judiciary which is capable of meeting the needs of the people for justice delivery.

The Governor said this while swearing in 5 new Judges of the State High Court and a Judge of the State Customary Court of Appeal at the Victoria Gowon Hall, new Government House Little Rayfield Jos.

He said so far, 25 Judges have been appointed during his tenure and he has been one of the few Governors to grant Autonomy to the Judiciary which has assisted the Judicial system to work better.

He said the new High Court Headquarters complex which God willing, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari will soon commission. Similarly, the Multi-Door Courthouse which has also been completed will also be commissioned and to use for Alternative Dispute Resolution.

While congratulating the new Judges on their appointment, he said there is no doubt that the appointments are based on merit and in recognition of their excellent service to the State and Nigeria over the years.

He reminded them that the task before them is enormous and the expectations of the citizens are very high. This he said is why they must demonstrate total dedication and commitment to the assignment for the peace, progress and stability of Plateau State and Nigeria at large.

“As Judicial Officers, I do not need to remind you that your calling gives you the rare privilege of making decisions that affect the lives of the people and sometimes bordering on life and death. This means that you must never take this assignment lightly or allow frivolous considerations to influence you. Consider this duty as a Public Trust given to you by God to represent him in the affairs of men.

Endeavour to stay true to your Oath of Office and discharge your duties with the fear of God and without fear, favour, affection or ill-will. Failure to do so will not only erode your integrity, but also put the entire society on the path of chaos and anarchy. When people cannot get justice, they may be forced to resort to self-help and other unconventional means to resolve issues. This will not augur well for the well-being of the society”.

He told the new appointees that they were coming on board at a time when the nation is in a process of transition from one administration to another both at the State and Federal levels.

This he said gives them the opportunity to help build democracy and rule of law in Plateau State and Nigeria at large.

“My Lords, it is also proper for me to remind you that the 2023 general elections are over and the battle now shifts to the Courts. At times like this, there is high tendency for enormous pressure to be mounted on Judges by politicians who want to get underserved advantage at all costs. I know you have the capacity to resist attempts to corrupt, confuse, intimidate or blackmail you towards participating in unethical conducts. Please stay focused on the oath you have taken and discharge your duties according to the laws of the land and the dictates of the legal profession”.

Responding on behalf of the new Judges, Justice Mary A. Izam assured the Governor that they will carry out their duties with the fear of God and serve justice to all manner of people without affection or ill-will.

The new Judges are:

Justice Mary A. Izam (HIGH COURT)

Justice Ashakabu Suleiman Wase (HIGH COURT)

Justice Charles Donglong (HIGH COURT)

Justice Shikamma Kassam Shehu (HIGH COURT)

Justice Nanle Titus Komak (HIGH COURT)

Justice Jettei P. Tutie (CCA)

Justice Musa had granted having considered all prayers of claimants and the facts that the defendants did not defend any of reliefs sought or file anything to show that they intend to defend the suit granted all the 10 reliefs sought by the claimants.

Portable arrested by Ogun State Police

Portable arrested by Ogun State Police

The Ogun State police leadership has finally made an arrest of Nigerian singer Portable. The arrest is coming days after the singer refused to honour the police invitation.

Remember that on Tuesday, recordings of the street performer cursing a few Nigerian policemen appeared online.

Abimbola Oyeyemi, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, commented on the development and verified the arrest of the singer. He revealed that Portable was currently resting at the state police headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.

According to Mr. Oyeyemi, the Zazuu crooner was detained after turning down five offers. Until Monday, when he will be charged in court, the singer will be held by authorities.

Recall that early this week Portable had gotten himself into more trouble because of his altercation with Ogun state police.

In a viral video shared on Tuesday, Portable could be seen creating a scene as he demanded an explanation for the officers’ presence, with the operatives notifying him that a petition was filed against him.

The spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, CSO, Olumuyiwa Adejobi while reacting to the viral video of Portable cursing police officers, disclosed that the singer is likely to face persecution.

The CSP explained that some Police officers had stormed his bar to arrest him following his refusal to go honour previous invitations.

The police force said the artist exhibited irrational behaviour and hurled insults at police officers carrying out their legal duty.

According to him, the action is criminal and punishable by the criminal laws of Nigeria.
