Plateau PDP Lawmakers Take Appeal to Supreme Court After Setback

In the latest turn of events, the 16 ousted members of the Plateau State House of Assembly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are taking their legal battle to the highest court in the land following a setback at the Court of Appeal.

Despite facing a temporary setback with the dismissal of their application for review by the Court of Appeal, these lawmakers remain resolute in their pursuit of justice. Hon Dalyop Fom, the former representative of Jos South constituency in the assembly, revealed their intention to seek recourse at the Supreme Court during a briefing with journalists.

Fom explained that their legal team had exhausted various avenues, including appeals to the National Judicial Council (NJC) and correspondence with the President of the Court of Appeal, in efforts to seek a review. However, their case encountered an unexpected hurdle when it was scheduled for review before a three-man panel instead of the requested five-man panel.

Asserting the importance of procedural fairness, Fom highlighted their disagreement with the composition of the panel, insisting on adherence to legal requirements. Despite pressure from the three-man panel to proceed, the lawmakers’ counsel stood firm, maintaining that a five-man panel was necessary for due process.

Contrary to media reports, Fom clarified that their application for review had not been considered or dismissed on its merits. Additionally, the Court imposed a significant fine on each lawmaker, totaling N128 million, further fueling their determination to seek justice through the Supreme Court.

Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, Fom reiterated that an existing order prevents the Speaker of the state House of Assembly from swearing in the rival All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers until the case is resolved.

Initially hopeful for a possible reversal of their ousting in light of a subsequent Supreme Court ruling, the lawmakers remain undeterred in their quest for legal vindication as they turn to the Supreme Court for further adjudication.

Binance exit Nigeria, suspends all naira services

Binance, a prominent cryptocurrency exchange, has declared the cessation of all services associated with the Nigerian naira (NGN). In an announcement made on Tuesday, March 5th, the exchange revealed that as of 8:00 UTC on March 8th, any remaining NGN balances in users’ accounts will be automatically switched to USDT stablecoin.

Additionally, users have been instructed to withdraw NGN before deposits are halted on March 5th. Binance will cease supporting NGN across spot trading, P2P, Auto Invest, and Binance Pay. The exchange assures that any remaining NGN balances will be converted to USDT automatically.

Amidst allegations of “illegal transactions” in Nigeria, two Binance officials have reportedly been arrested, with the federal government seeking at least $10 billion in retribution. This move comes amidst a crackdown on the crypto exchange platform aimed at salvaging the value of the Naira.

Established in 2017, Binance is renowned for its extensive altcoin trading options, offering crypto-to-crypto trading in over 350 cryptocurrencies and virtual tokens, including bitcoin, ether, litecoin, dogecoin, and its native coin, BNB.

The conversion rate for automatic conversions will be 1 USDT per 1,515.13 naira, as stated on Binance’s website.

EFCC arrests 21 food-loaded trucks heading to neighbouring countries

Operatives of the Maiduguri Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, arrested 21 trucks loaded with food and non-food items heading towards N’djamena, Chad Republic, Central African Republic and Cameroon.

The trucks were intercepted in a sting operation at major exit routes along Kalabiri/Gamboru Ngala and Bama roads, Borno State.

Investigation showed food items cleverly concealed in the trucks that would have gone undetected, but for the eagle-eyed vigilance of operatives of the Commission.

Further checks showed that the Waybills covering the goods carried by the trucks indicated their destinations as N’djamena, Chad Republic, Central Africa Republic and Cameroon respectively.

The arrest of the trucks is expected to stem the tide of food insecurity occasioned by unscrupulous antics of smugglers across the country.

The EFCC in a statement released said the suspects arrested with the trucks are being profiled and would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.
