Plateau Assembly Speaker Swears in 9 APC Members Out of 16

The Plateau State House of Assembly welcomed nine new members as they were sworn in by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Gabriel Dewan.

After weeks of pressure from members-elect of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the swearing-in ceremony took place.

Among the new members is Hon. Nanbol Listick, the sole representative from the Labour Party. These members have committed to supporting the smooth functioning of the legislature, with assurances not to disrupt activities or seek the impeachment of the speaker.Additionally,

Hon. Madaki Ajiji from Jos East constituency was elected as the Deputy Speaker by his fellow colleagues.

Previously, the apex court faulted the Court of Appeal’s judgment that had nullified the election of the 16 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers due to internal crises within the party. The Supreme Court highlighted this discrepancy while delivering its ruling on the Plateau 2023 governorship election. However, the Court of Appeal dismissed the application by the 16 PDP lawmakers for a review of the judgment, citing the comments made by the Supreme Court justices.

The refusal to inaugurate the 16 APC members had left only eight lawmakers sitting at the Plateau Assembly, prompting allegations that Governor Caleb Muftwang was behind Dewan’s actions. The APC National Working Committee (NWC) condemned the Speaker and the Governor for their failure to abide by the Court of Appeal judgment, threatening legal action to enforce compliance.

Isaac Kekemeke, the APC’s National Vice Chairman (South West), expressed the party’s determination to uphold the court’s decision and criticized the Governor and the Speaker for flouting the rule of law. He decried their actions as a threat to democracy and called for urgent intervention by law enforcement agencies to address the matter.

“The patience of the APC is running out. But because the APC is a peaceful party, it is calling on the law enforcement agencies to do the needful now and not tomorrow,” Kekemeke emphasized, highlighting the party’s frustration with the ongoing defiance of the court’s ruling.

As tensions simmer and the dispute over the assembly’s composition intensifies, stakeholders await further developments and hope for a resolution that upholds the principles of justice and democracy.

Bobrisky in Hot Water with EFCC Over Naira Spraying Allegations

In a recent development, controversial Nigerian socialite Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, finds himself under the scrutiny of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly engaging in the unlawful act of spraying Naira notes. This incident has sparked considerable attention, shedding light on the legal implications of such actions and raising questions about the accountability of public figures.

Operatives of the EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Command launched an investigation into Bobrisky’s activities following a video report that captured him spraying and flaunting wads of new Naira notes at the premiere of the movie “Ajakaju,” produced by Nollywood actress and producer Eniola Ajao. The event took place at the prestigious Film One Circle Mall in Lekki, Lagos, on March 24, 2024. Subsequent inquiries revealed that this wasn’t an isolated incident, as Bobrisky had allegedly engaged in similar behavior at other event centers and parties on multiple occasions.

In response to the EFCC’s invitation, Bobrisky appeared at the Lagos Zonal Command headquarters on Wednesday, April 4, 2024, for interrogation. He voluntarily provided statements to aid in the investigation, demonstrating a willingness to cooperate with the authorities. However, the outcome of the investigation remains pending as the EFCC continues its probe into the matter.

The act of spraying Naira notes, also known as “money spraying,” is a violation of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s regulations. It is considered a form of public nuisance and a disregard for the country’s currency. If found guilty, Bobrisky could face legal consequences, including potential charges and penalties.

News of Bobrisky’s interrogation by the EFCC has generated significant public interest and sparked discussions on social media platforms. While some express concern over the alleged misconduct and call for accountability, others defend Bobrisky, citing freedom of expression and questioning the severity of the accusations.

As the investigation into Bobrisky’s alleged involvement in Naira abuse unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding financial regulations and respecting the law. Regardless of one’s status or influence, all individuals are subject to legal scrutiny and must be held accountable for their actions. The outcome of this case will undoubtedly have implications for the future conduct of public figures and the enforcement of financial regulations in Nigeria.

University of Jos VC Under EFCC Scrutiny for Alleged N355 Million Fraud

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Ishaya Tanko, is facing intense scrutiny as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) delves into allegations of financial misconduct totaling N355 million. This unfolding controversy has cast a shadow over the esteemed institution, sparking concerns about transparency and accountability within university leadership.

Recent reports from Sahara indicate that the EFCC, in a letter dated March 19, 2024, signed by Adebayo Adeniyi, Zonal Commander, Abuja, summoned the VC for interrogation. The commission requested Prof. Tanko to appear alongside Dr. Yusuf Abdullahi, the University’s Deputy Dean of Student Affairs, for an interview scheduled for Tuesday, March 26, 2024.

In the letter titled ‘Re: Investigation Activities. Letter Of Invitation,’ with reference number CR:3000/EFCC/ABJ/ZN/CTGI-PS.1/TA/VOL.18/200, the EFCC outlined their request for the VC to provide a response to their earlier communication dated December 27, 2023.

During the interrogation held on March 26, Prof. Tanko faced rigorous questioning from EFCC officials. He stands accused of allegedly diverting N355 million to various private accounts, purportedly to settle rental obligations for the university’s liaison offices in Lagos and Abuja, through a company named Kolo Global Concept Ltd, which he presented as the property owners.

However, according to a petition filed by some University staff members to the Minister of Education, the university already owned the liaison offices, casting doubt on the legitimacy of the transactions. The petition alleges that the funds were disbursed to different accounts at the direction of Prof. Tanko, leading to disputes among the involved parties.

Efforts to reach Prof. Tanko and the University’s public relations officer, Abdullahi B. Abdullahi, have been unsuccessful as they did not respond to calls or messages.

The unfolding saga underscores the importance of upholding integrity and transparency in university administration, and it highlights the necessity for thorough investigations to ensure accountability and safeguard public trust.”

Plateau State Traders and Businesses Return to Operations Following Government Intervention

After a one-day warning strike orchestrated by the State Joint Transport and Traders and Marketers Association on April 3rd, 2024, in Jos and Bukuru Metropolis, shops and businesses in Plateau State have reopened with the government stepping in to address the issues raised by Executive Order 003.

The strike, prompted by concerns over Executive Order 003’s impact on buildings and vehicular traffic, resulted in widespread impoundment of articulated vehicles by the government’s taskforce. However, productive discussions between the Joint Associations and the Secretary to the State Government, Arch Samuel Jatau, have led to a resolution to address these concerns.

A joint communique has been issued, announcing the formation of a 16-member committee tasked with collaborating with the state government to tackle the challenges at hand. This collaborative effort signifies the government’s recognition of the joint unions as vital stakeholders in state matters.

With the cooperation of their members acknowledged, the Joint Associations have encouraged businesses to resume activities, indicating a gradual return to normalcy post-strike.

During the strike, shops along Rwang Pam Street and certain sections of Terminus were closed in solidarity with the protest, fueled by concerns over truck impoundments and hefty fines. Despite the disruptions, traders remained resolute in their demands for resolution.

As operations resume and dialogue between the Joint Associations and the government advances, there is cautious optimism for a resolution that addresses the concerns of all involved stakeholders.
