FG Suspends Establishment Of New Tertiary Institutions For 7 Years

The Federal Government has announced a seven-year suspension on the establishment of new federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country.

The decision was a decisive move to address declining quality and infrastructure in the nation’s tertiary education sector.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa disclosed this to State House correspondents after Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Alausa said the moratorium, which applies to all categories of federal tertiary institutions was aimed at halting duplication and waste, while consolidating resources to upgrade existing facilities and manpower.

According to him, access to tertiary education is no longer Nigeria’s problem. Instead, the proliferation of new institutions has stretched resources thin, leading to deteriorating infrastructure and a drop in graduate quality.

He warned that without urgent action, the unemployment rate would worsen as many graduates leave school without life skills.

“Today we have 72 public federal universities, 42 federal polytechnics, and 28 federal colleges of education, alongside hundreds of state and private institutions. Yet, in the 2024/2025 academic session, 199 universities had fewer than 100 candidates applying through JAMB, and 34 had zero applicants,” Alausa said.

He revealed that 295 polytechnics, both public and private, also had fewer than 100 applicants, while 64 colleges of education recorded zero applicants.

He cited a federal university with fewer than 800 students but 1,200 staff as an example of the inefficiencies and waste in the system.

The minister stressed that the decision will enable government to focus on rehabilitating infrastructure, recruiting and training staff, and increasing the carrying capacities of existing institutions.

He noted that some federal universities in certain northern states currently have fewer than 2,000 students.

Alausa said the moratorium will ensure that Nigeria’s graduates maintain competitiveness and respect globally, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s mandate for the highest quality education comparable to international standards.

He thanked the President for his “political will and commitment” to education.

The FEC also approved the establishment of nine new private universities.

Addressing possible contradictions, Alausa explained that the approvals were for pre-existing applications, some for over six years old which had been delayed due to inefficiencies at the National Universities Commission (NUC).

He disclosed that when he assumed office alongside the Minister of State for Education, there were 551 pending private university applications, many of which were inactive, adding that new guidelines reduced active applications to 79, out of which nine met all requirements and were approved.

Alausa added that similar moratoriums will soon apply to the establishment of private universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education to ensure quality is that is not sacrificed for expansion.

Tinubu’s Administration Filled With Yoruba – Babachir Lawal

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of nepotism, alleging that the federal government is dominated by officials from the president’s Yoruba ethnic group and that other political constituencies have been marginalised.

Speaking on Channels Television, Lawal said the composition of the government and its decision-making processes are heavily skewed in favour of a small circle of Yoruba loyalists. He claimed that meetings are often conducted in the Yoruba language, even in the presence of non-Yoruba officials, which he said undermines inclusivity in governance.

“I cannot go to a meeting where 99 percent of the participants are Yorubas. Sometimes they finish the meeting in their language while I am sitting there,” he said.

Lawal said he had warned Tinubu’s political associates before the 2023 presidential election that alienating northern voters could have serious consequences. He referred to an incident in Ogun State where Tinubu made remarks perceived as dismissive towards northerners.

“I told them on the campaign platform: if you antagonise the northerners, we are finished,” he said. “The problem is that when you support them and they win, they behave as if they have conquered you. They will not count your support.”

Lawal said his warning had proved correct, claiming that many non-Yoruba allies now feel excluded from political influence. He alleged that key government appointments, as well as the allocation of responsibilities, reveal a concentration of power that does not reflect Nigeria’s ethnic diversity.

He linked his criticisms of nepotism to broader concerns about governance and national unity. “In a country like Nigeria, no one group can run the government alone without consequences,” he said.

Lawal said he was “thankful” never to have been part of Tinubu’s administration, insisting that its operating style conflicted with his principles. “If I were in this government, I probably would have been sacked a long time ago, or even killed,” he said.

The former SGF also tied the question of representation to electoral performance. He said demographic realities in Lagos during the 2023 election caught the APC off guard when Labour Party candidate Peter Obi won the state. “They didn’t understand the demography of Lagos. It was a shocker for them,” he said.

He alleged that voter suppression was later used to limit the influence of demographic groups that had supported the opposition. Lawal claimed that such tactics, combined with ethnic concentration in appointments, reinforced perceptions of exclusivity in governance.

Lawal’s accusations echo complaints from opposition politicians and civil society groups, who have argued that Nigeria’s political leadership has not adequately addressed issues of ethnic balance. The presidency has consistently denied such claims, saying appointments are based on merit and aimed at ensuring national cohesion.

Lawal said his criticism was based on political principles rather than personal grievances. He emphasised that his decision to distance himself from the current government was deliberate and based on long-standing concerns about inclusivity.

“They were warned. Now everyone can see what I was talking about,” he said.

Plateau to Host Nigeria’s First International Coffee Festival, Drawing Stakeholders from 30 Countries

Jos, Plateau State — Plateau State is set to make history as it hosts Nigeria’s maiden International Coffee Festival from August 28 to 30, 2025, at Langfield, Little Rayfield, Jos. The event, organized by Lingzhi Global Nigeria Ltd., aims to transform coffee from an overlooked crop into a driver of economic growth, job creation, and cultural exchange.

Speaking at a press briefing, Blessing Nanman, Chief Executive Officer of Lingzhi Global, described the festival as “a legacy project” that will rotate annually across Nigeria’s 36 states, beginning in Plateau. “This is not just a beverage festival,” Nanman stated. “It’s about empowerment, job creation, mindset shift, and national development. Plateau State is taking the lead to inspire others.”

The three-day event will welcome participants from over 30 countries, including coffee powerhouses such as Brazil, and will feature barista competitions, coffee tastings, workshops, cultural exhibitions, and training sessions. Attendees will experience the entire coffee journey, from planting to roasting, packaging, branding, and sales. Traditional Plateau dishes paired with locally brewed coffee will also be showcased.

Beyond the festivities, Nanman announced ambitious post-event plans, including the establishment of 821 coffee shops nationwide, mobile coffee carts, coffee education centers, and start-up grants for coffee and chocolate entrepreneurs. These initiatives are projected to create over 10,000 jobs within three years.

For Plateau’s coffee farmers, the festival signals a new era. Mr. Fei-Ishaku Davou, Chairman of the Plateau State Chapter of the National Coffee and Tea Association of Nigeria, recalled past struggles, including a 2005 incident where a farmer burned his 10,000-seedling coffee farm due to lack of market access. “We have the farmers and the foundation,” Davou said. “Now it’s time to build.”

The Plateau State Government has pledged support, viewing the initiative as key to youth empowerment and economic revival. Nanven Barko, Chairman of the festival’s local organizing committee, noted, “We are not just creating jobs. We are reviving our economy. We are uplifting the naira. Coffee can once again be our pride.”

Organizers believe Plateau’s unique altitude, fertile soil, and favorable climate make it Nigeria’s coffee capital. With global attention turning to Jos this August, the state is poised to brew more than coffee — it is brewing opportunity, innovation, and a renewed sense of national pride.

‘I’ll Die On Sunday After Attending Service’ – Pastor Adeboye Predicts Own Death

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has again spoken about his vision of how he will eventually pass on—peacefully, on a Sunday, after attending church service and enjoying his favourite meal, pounded yam.

Speaking on the fourth day of the church’s ongoing International Convention themed “The Overcomers,” Pastor Adeboye reiterated that death does not always come through prolonged illness. He had previously shared this same vision two years ago.

“I will die on a Sunday after attending service, eat my beloved pounded yam, and then pass on without any sickness,” Pastor Adeboye declared, affirming that his departure would be sudden and painless.

Delivering a sermon titled “Possess Your Possessions,” the revered cleric urged believers to actively claim what rightfully belongs to them through Christ.

Drawing on the biblical example of the Israelites, who had to fight to take possession of the Promised Land, he said: “In many cases, you may have to fight for things that are already yours.”

He highlighted key areas where believers must resist spiritual opposition—healing, prosperity, fruitfulness, and long life:

“Your greatest friend, Jesus Christ, paid a great price to purchase your healing,” he emphasized. “Yet, there is a thief who comes to steal, kill, and destroy” (John 10:10), he warned, urging Christians to resist sickness through faith.

On prosperity, Pastor Adeboye declared: “The One who owns the earth and its fullness, and owns all the silver and gold, paid a terrible price so that you wouldn’t be poor. As long as you want to remain poor, you will remain poor.”

He also addressed criticism directed at successful Christians: “If you make it as a Christian, they criticise you. If you die poor, they say, ‘Where’s your God?’”

On the subject of longevity, he stated: “Long life is yours. But the devil wants to kill you with all he has. You must fight to live.”

He also emphasized God’s command for fruitfulness, referencing biblical figures like Rachel and Hannah, who overcame barrenness through persistent prayer and determination.

“We must not remain under the power of the forces of darkness. How can I be a child of God and still be tormented?” he asked, encouraging believers to reject all forms of spiritual oppression.

Using the story of Jacob wrestling with an angel (Genesis 32) as a model for spiritual perseverance, Pastor Adeboye concluded: “It is what we tolerate that disturbs us. Stop tolerating sickness, poverty, barrenness, or premature death. Fight to possess your possessions—it’s your spiritual duty, made possible by Christ’s sacrifice.”

PSPBA Leads Peace Efforts in Mangu as Residents Reaffirm Commitment Amid Security Concerns

Residents of Mangun, Chakfem, and Ampang West communities in Mangu Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State have reiterated their commitment to sustaining peace and fostering dialogue with various groups, despite rising security challenges in the region.

This resolution emerged during a one-day stakeholder engagement organized by the Plateau State Peacebuilding Agency (PSPBA) at Mangun District. The event aimed to explore viable solutions to persistent threats undermining the stability of the affected communities.

Speaking at the event, the Director General of PSPBA, Dr. Julie Sanda, represented by the Director of Administration, Elkannah Izam, emphasized the urgency of grassroots engagement. She noted that recent violent incidents, including the tragic killing of travelers in the area, necessitated intensified peacebuilding efforts at the community level. Sanda condemned the attacks, labeling them unjustifiable, and called on youth and local leaders to collaborate with security agencies to protect their communities.

She also commended traditional rulers from Mangun, Chakfem, and Ampang West for their resilience in upholding peace amid unprovoked attacks that have claimed lives and destroyed property. Sanda revealed that the engagement was a direct outcome of deliberations at the monthly Expanded Community Architecture Forum (CPAF) for Mangu.

Echoing her sentiments, the Mishkagham Mangun, Da Job Dapal, raised concerns over the porous borders around Chakfem and the expansive forest along the Plateau–Nasarawa border, which have become hideouts for criminals. He lamented that these elements routinely launch attacks from these locations, instilling fear among residents. However, he reaffirmed that Mangun District remains a peaceful and ethnically diverse community committed to coexistence.

District Head of Chakfem, Da Jwangken Luther, welcomed the initiative and urged for the creation of a localized peace structure. He also advocated for the inclusion of the Fulani community in peace dialogues to heal fractured relationships. His counterpart from Ampang West endorsed the recommendation.

The Chief Imam of Mangun District, Abdullahi, refuted rumors that no Muslims reside in the area, stressing that such falsehoods are divisive. Similarly, Mrs. Lucy Inusa, Woman Leader of Ampang West, affirmed that Christians, Muslims, and other ethnic groups continue to live harmoniously.

It will be recalled that wedding guests traveling from Kaduna to Qua’an Pan LGA were recently killed near Mangun, heightening tensions in the region.
