Ehanire: Health Minister urges JOHESU to suspend warning strike, pledges negotiations over demands

The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, on Monday, September 14, has appealed to the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) to suspend the one-week warning strike nationwide.

Ehanire made the appeal during the briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF)on COVID-19 in Abuja.

“I use this opportunity to appeal to JOHESU to suspend their strike and go into a negotiation.

“The position of the Ministry of Health is that strikes by healthcare workers jeopardise the lives of citizens, especially at such times of global health emergencies as now.

“Nigeria needs the service of all our health workers to control the spread of COVID-19. Issues around allowances are multi-sectoral and have always been served with negotiations no matter how long it took,” Ehanire pleaded.

1st News reports that the minister’s plea had come hours after JOHESU President, Dr. Biobelomoye Josiah, asked the federal government to attend to its demands with the same seriousness it accorded that of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD).

NARD downed tools over the same issues but called it off days after coming to an agreement with federal government representatives.

JOHESU, which is the umbrella body of health workers’ unions and associations in the country, said its demands merited such urgent attention, too.

Meanwhile, Mrs Funmi Sessi, the Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos State chapter, on Monday, September 14, urged the state government to implement payment of the new national minimum wage for tertiary institutions workers.

Sessi made the plea in an interview; during the protest of academic and non-academic unions of the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo.

The protesting unions include Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU); Non-Academic Staff of Educational; and Associated Institutions (NASU); as well as Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).

1st News had reported President Muhammadu Buhari had assented to the payment of N30,000; as the new National Minimum Wage Bill, which became law on April 18, 2019.

Sessi said that the state government as owner of the institutions; should not be sectional to their workers.

“Other state workers have been enjoying their minimum wage since last year. Until they do certain things at all tertiary institutions in the state, we will not agree.

“NLC at the national levels is behind the decisions of the unions; and they will not accept the delay of the implementation of the minimum wage,” Sessi said.

What is Python Used for? | Major Industries

How is Python used in the real world?

Python is one of the most popular languages for coding in the world.

The majority of top U.S. colleges even use Python in their introductory coding classes: teaching students to use Python to build simple games, parse information from web pages, and even conduct language processing!

Still, many parents and students alike often wonder — how is Python actually used in companies or various fields?

Read on to learn how Python powers today’s leading industries, and plays a major role in numerous computer science disciplines.

Why Python?

Python is a high-level and general-purpose coding language — meaning that it’s easier to understand and can be used to solve a variety of problems!

With its simple syntax, high readability, usability across operating systems, Python is a valuable language to both learn and use for a variety of applications.

It’s therefore not surprising that Python is prevalent in not only today’s job market, but also in common technology we use everyday.

Python programming is a skill that can be used in virtually any industry, as well as in positions far beyond just software development. From industries like finance, healthcare, and insurance, to fields like aerospace to entertainment — Python-based tech is driving innovation and new solutions.

In our What is Python 101 guide, we introduced Python as well as a few of the fields Python is used in such as tech, finance, and biotech. But in this article, we’ll be taking a deeper look at even more of Python’s broad uses — specifically in the following areas:

  • Web development
  • Data science
  • Machine learning
  • Artificial intelligence

Applications of Python

Web Development

While HTML, CSS, and Javascript may be the common choice of tools when it comes to web development, Python is also a great choice.

Web development refers to the building of websites on the internet, from static, plain text pages to dynamic ecommerce sites and interactive internet applications.

Coding is crucial in web development to build out site functions, optimize user experience, and ensure that that information is organized properly. Python’s web frameworks such as Django and Flask have become popular options for website development.

Python is a great option for backend web development, and is used by many companies today.

These open-source frameworks allow users to build web applications more efficiently due to Python’s ability to handle vast amounts of data and automate tasks. In fact, companies such as Instagram, Pinterest and Google incorporate Python in their backend web development.

Data Science

Python is also a major language of choice when it comes to data science and data analysis.

In the age of big data, we come into contact with data frequently in our everyday lives, with technology such as navigation (GPS), online shopping, energy use, and wearables such as smart watches.

The average household contains around eleven devices and that number is likely to increase in the future! With so many devices, there is a vast amount of data that businesses need to process in order to provide their services.

Python-based tools are often used to visualize, process, and analyze large amounts of data.

Data science relates to processing data and inferencing trends — and Python is incredibly useful in this area due its intensive packages like scipy, numpy, and pandas.

Additionally, the matplotlib package can be used to build data visualizations. This makes Python a popular choice in fields like bioinformatics that also involve a lot of data and modeling.

These Python-based tools have become popular due to their ease of use and scalability. For example, Netflix uses scipy and numpy for numerical computing to manage user traffic across the platform.

Machine Learning

By analyzing vast amounts of data, machine learning algorithms can find patterns and apply those patterns to make sense of future behavior.

The most obvious use of machine learning in products is recommendation systems. Companies such as Netflix, Spotify, and Youtube collect user activity to make predictions and suggest playlists and videos.

Scikit-learn and tensorflow are Python libraries that enable the use of algorithms for classification, clustering, and regression on large data sets. The high performance and extensive functionality of these libraries make them essential in any exploration of machine learning.

Artificial Intelligence

Machine learning is actually just one facet of artificial intelligence. AI refers to the intelligence of machines and the development of computer systems to perform human-oriented tasks such as perception or decision making.

One prominent example of artificial intelligence is in ridesharing apps, like Uber and Lyft.

Python is used in artificial intelligence for apps like Lyft or Uber. The AI system can then predict things like user demand and estimated arrival times.

Uber utilizes AI for predicting user demand and estimated arrival times (among other features) and much of this is accomplished through Python.

In addition to some of the previously mentioned Python libraries, AI functionality such as prediction models and neural networks can be created through other libraries like keras and pytorch.

Python is Everywhere!

Among popular programming languages, Python is one of the most diverse in its applications. Moreover, it’s deeply integrated within our everyday life as well as today’s leading companies.

The range of careers that involve Python include software engineer, web developer, data scientist, product manager, business analyst and more. Regardless of industry, companies in this technological age rely on data-driven decision making and Python is the perfect tool to do just that.

If you or your child are interested in the fields or roles listed above, then learning Python is a great choice!

Want to Become a Python Programmer?

One of Python’s greatest strengths is helping new coders learn basic concepts and become familiar with programming! There are also many resources widely available to learn Python, for new coders of all ages.

NAFDAC announces plans to ban usage, sale of alcohol in polythene sachets

The National Agency for Foods and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), on Sunday, September 13, announced the imminent prohibition of the sale and consumption of alcohol in sachets and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles.

This was contained in a statement issued by the director-general of NAFDAC, Mojisola Adeyeye.

Adeyeye said uncontrolled access and availability of high concentration alcohol in sachet and small volume PET or glass bottles contribute to substance and alcohol abuse in Nigeria.

Furthermore, she explained that NAFDAC and the ministry of health have engaged major shareholders and have reached certain agreements.

She said the food agency will no longer register new products in sachet and small volume PET or glass bottles with contents above 30 percent alcohol by volume (ABV).

“These concerns relate to negative effects of irresponsible alcohol consumption on public health and on the safety and security of the public, alcohol being a toxic and psychoactive substance with dependence producing properties, ”she said.

“In regard to alcohol, major stakeholders have been engaged at the highest level and are already sensitised to the issue.

“To this end, several interventions jointly agreed upon by major stakeholders are being undertaken and as a first step, no new products in sachet and small volume PET or glass bottles above 30 per cent ABV will be registered by NAFDAC.

“Furthermore, to reduce availability and curb abuse, effective January 31 2020, producers of alcohol in sachets and small volume PET and glass bottles are to reduce production by 50 per cent of capacity prior to January 2020.

“The overall goal is a complete phase-out of high concentration alcohol in sachets and small PET and glass bottles in line with the agreed roadmap or earlier.”

Meanwhile, the management of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has come under criticism after several Nigerian students studying in the UK universities under its sponsorship said they are still stranded abroad.

This is despite the commission’s claim that it has remitted money for their tuition and stipend.

In August, the NDDC had stated that it approved over $5.9 million (about N2.28 billion) to 197 students; who are of the 2019 batch on its scholarship programme.

The commission said it had also begun the processes for the payment of school fees owed 94 scholarship beneficiaries for the 2018 batch.

However, some of the students – the 2018 batch – have come out to say that the NDDC deliberately excluded them from the payment.

“The NDDC selectively handpicked those it paid without any defined criteria; and is refusing to pay fees; grants; as well as upkeep of 2018 scholars for no justifiable reason whatsoever,” the students explained.

“This came as a rude shock to us; because historically, the NDDC had always paid the fees as well as upkeep of scholars; in the order in which they were incurred; that is, from the earliest to the latest,” the statement added.

Teenage boy stabs celebrant to death at house party

An Ogun State teenage boy identified as Sunday Philip reportedly attended a birthday ceremony uninvited only to end up stabbing the celebrant to death.

The teenage boy, Sunday Philip went to a birthday party where he stabbed the celebrant, Omeika Josiah at Amini Awo village in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun state.

1st News gathered that the suspect identified as Sunday Philip, said to be an apprentice mechanic; arrived the party uninvited and was served a bottle of beer as well as a plate of spiced spaghetti.

As the party progressed, Philip got into a fight with a guest after a misunderstanding.

The celebrant walked in on both men fighting and took sides with the guest identified as Jonah; and this got Philip angry. The suspect ran into a nearby house. He returned with a knife which he used to stab Philip.

“One of the guests named Jonah sent a boy to move the sound system away from the scene when he noticed that food and drinks were pouring on the floor.

But Sunday (Philip), an apprentice mechanic; prevented the boy sent by Jonah from taking the jukebox away and seized the sound gadget. Jonah tried to take the sound system from Sunday and a fight broke out between them,”  the source explained.

“When Sunday realised that he could not overpower Jonah, he rushed to a nearby house and brought out a knife to attack Jonah. Unfortunately, on his way back to Jonah, he met the celebrator, Josiah; who warned him not to disrupt his party. But Sunday then became angry that Josiah had taken sides with Jonah, so he stabbed him to death.”

A community leader who confirmed the incident said he was not aware of the plan to hold a birthday party in the village; and had the deceased celebrator told him, he would have informed the village head, Chief Kunle Aromokun; to put in place adequate security.

“It is sad that the life of the celebrator was cut short by an uninvited guest at his own party. If the late Josiah had told me that he was going to organise a party to celebrate his birthday, I would have told the Baale (village head), who would have in turn invited members of the Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) to provide security and prevent a breakdown of law and order at the event.” he said.

One of the guests at the party identified simply as Oladele said that the suspect lived on the same street as Josiah; but he was not invited to the party.

“Sunday (Philip) had left home for work very early in the morning. He had no idea that Josiah was going to throw a birthday party in the neighbourhood,” said Oladele.

“He however came to the party when he got wind that it was Josiah’s birthday celebration. Only God knows what came over him; when he launched into a fight with another guest and close friend of the celebrant. If not for the timely intervention of the community leaders and other residents; he would have been mobbed to death when he was nabbed after he tried to escape from the scene where he stabbed Josiah to death.”

Presidency dispels reports of food hike, explains prices coming down

The Presidency on Friday, September 11, slammed reports that the prices of food prices are spiralling.

According to a spokesman of the Presidency, Garba Shehu; the prices of food items in the country are dropping as a result of the agricultural reforms of the regime of the President Muhammadu Buhari.

Shehu made this known while making an appearance on a TV interview.

He explained that although prices may differ depending on the state and area; however, on the general, there is a drop in prices of food items.

The Presidency also explained the motive behind the President’s directive on Thursday that the Central Bank of Nigeria should with immediate effect stop the release of money for food and fertiliser importation.

He said President Buhari’s intentions are in the best interest of the country.

He said, “Nigerians must give consideration for the fact that the President’s directive to the CBN is driven by nothing other than a patriotic motive”.

According to Shehu, this directive falls in line with the President’s quest to boost agriculture in the country; a position to which some persons disagree; arguing that the CBN’s policies should not be imposed by a political authority.

Addressing those who hold the view that Buhari’s directive is overreaching, Shehu said, “I am not sure there is anywhere in the world that the Central Bank is So independent that it will operate as foreign ownership”.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday, September 10, explained it was alarmed by the directive given by President Muhammadu Buhari to ministers to “go on the offensive;” against Nigerians in projecting its achievements.

This admonition against Buhari was contained in a statement signed by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, in Abuja.

He said “The PDP is alarmed by President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive to officials of his administration to ‘go on the offensive;’ against Nigerians, who are patriotically crying out under the burden of economic hardship foisted on them by his insensitive; clueless; deceptive; and extremely corrupt administration.

“The PDP asserts that such a directive in a ministerial retreat which ought to be a problem-solving forum; is symptomatic of an administration that has become overwhelmed by the reality of its own failures; and now seeking desperate measures to suppress the voice of the people.

“Our Party declares that such anti-people stance amounts to a huge betrayal by President Buhari, who, before his elections; promised Nigerians an Eldorado; only to now turn around to label their cries and demands for good governance; security and basic necessities of life; particularly at the time they are agitating for reduction in the cost of fuel and electricity, as “irresponsible and politically motivated.”
