INEC confirms Dec. 5th as date for 15 pending bye-elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed the conduct of 15 pending bye-elections for Dec. 5.

Mr Festus Okoye, the INEC National Commissioner, and Chairman, Information and Voter Education, in a statement issued in Abuja said that the decision was taken at the commission’s meeting held on Friday, November 13.

He said that INEC among other things reviewed the outcome of its quarterly consultations with stakeholders in the electoral process.

He said that the commission further reviewed the security situation and other challenges regarding the bye-elections holding in 11 states.

The commission on Oct. 22, postponed the bye-elections earlier scheduled for Oct. 31, on account of the security situation and other environmental challenges in the country.

Okoye recalled that the commission met again on Nov. 5, and reviewed the situation.

He said that the commission at the meeting noted among other things the vandalism of INEC local government offices and facilities which affected some areas where the bye-elections were scheduled to hold.

“Consequently, the commission decided to consult critical stakeholders in the electoral process before deciding on a definite date for the conduct of the bye-elections.

“The commission consulted with political parties and civil society organisations on Nov. 10, as well as with the media and the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) on Nov. 11.

“Finally, it met with all Resident Electoral Commissioners on Thursday, Nov. 12.

“Based on these consultations, the Commission believes that security in the affected States has improved while the environmental challenges have reasonably abated.

“Consequently, the Commission has decided to hold all the pending bye-elections on Saturday, Dec. 5.”

The national commissioner said that INEC acknowledged the support, understanding, and cooperation of stakeholders and the general public as it considered the scheduling of the bye-elections.

These, according to him, were done in the overall efforts to reposition the electoral process as well as to give meaning and value to the votes of the people.

Okoye also appealed to voters and stakeholders in the states with pending bye-elections to continue to cooperate with INEC in its efforts to deliver credible elections under a safe environment.

Sanwo-Olu unveils first locally-manufactured electric car (Video)

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Friday, November 13, unveiled Nigeria’s first locally-assembled full electric car, aimed at reducing pressure on the use of petroleum.

Sanwo-Olu said at the unveiling in Lagos that the electric car was technology on display.

The Hyundai Kona car, manufactured by Stallion Group is 100 per cent electric and comes with zero-emission, 482km driving range, and can be charged both at home and workplace.

“The future that we see is the future of technology and this is the technology that we are talking about.

“This is 21st Century technology that has been brought into our country.

“With the innovation of Hyundai Kona, we do not need to put the pressure on what is the pump price of oil again, what is the pump price of petroleum again.

“All the issues and fights that we are having about prices of petroleum going up and the rest of it will be a thing of the past.

“This is a way to go, and it is the future that we are seeing now.

“This is the first electric car that we are seeing and we as the government need to partner with them,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu said there was a need to create an enabling environment for the company to do well so that it could employ a lot more youths.

The governor said that with the unveiling of the Hyundai Kona electric car, youths would be employed and empowered for greater opportunities.

According to him, the state government will partner with Ibile Oil and Gas and other private organisations to create different charging points in the city, so that people will have where to charge the cars.

“For us, we see a renowned hope, for us we see a tomorrow coming today, for us we see and believe in the Stallion dream,” the governor said.

Sanwo-Olu commended Stallion Group for believing in the Lagos and Nigeria dream and revamping the moribund asset located along Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

In his address, the Managing Director, the Stallion Group, Rohtagi Manish, said that the innovation was a step towards an eco-friendly green Lagos.

Manish said that the material used to assemble Nigeria’s First 100 per cent electric zero-emission car was mostly sourced from local resources.

The vehicle, when fully charged for 9hrs 35mins, can go a distance of 482km (the equivalent of Lagos to Warri) before it requires charging again.

Buhari approves, signs Banks, Other Financial Institutions Act 2020 into law

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Friday, November 13, signed the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act 2020 into law.

This was disclosed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in a statement titled “President Buhari assents to Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act 2020″.

According to the statement, President Buhari signed the piece of legislation on Thursday.

Shehu explained that the new law repeals the extant Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act 1991 as amended.

He said the new law was expected to enhance the soundness and resilience of the financial system for sustainable growth and development of the Nigerian economy.

The statement reads, “The BOFI Act 2020 updates the enabling law in response to developments and significant evolution in the financial sector over the last two decades. It will increase the appetite of banks and other financial institutions to channel much-needed credit to the real sector to support economic recovery and promote sustainable growth.

“In this respect, it introduces a credit tribunal to improve loan recovery and address the incidence of high non-performing loans within the financial system, which has been a key deterrent to lending by financial institutions.

“Furthermore, it strengthens the regulatory and supervisory framework for the financial industry and provides additional tools for managing failing institutions and systemic distress to preserve financial stability amongst others.

“The Central Bank of Nigeria will hold structured engagements with stakeholders across various sectors of the economy on critical aspects of the Act in the coming months.

“This enactment of the BOFI Act 2020 is a historic and significant achievement, which is indicative of effective and productive collaboration between the Executive and Legislature arms of government.”

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has berated the existence of those it described as ‘bandits’, within the ranks of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) allegedly responsible for the perceived failures in the governance of Nigeria.

This latest outburst comes in the aftermath of a statement credited to the Director-General of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Dr Salihu Lukman, on Thursday suggesting that some APC leaders behave like “criminal bandits.”

In relation to that statement, the PDP said the APC “is no better than a pillaging and treasury looting gang.”

In a statement issued by its national spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, on Thursday, November 12, the PDP said: “The fresh revelation that the All Progressives Congress (APC) brims with ‘political bandits’ has further confirmed why the APC has visited our nation with so much violence, power-grabbing, election malpractices, human right abuses, unbridled looting and divisive policies under the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.”

Dan Etete: JPMorgan pledges to expose bankers who approved $875m transfers to former Petroleum Minister

JPMorgan Chase & Co., a foremost bank in the United States, has agreed to identify any bank officials who approved $875 million of transfers to Dan Etete; a former Petroleum Minister in Nigeria.

The development comes after the Nigerian government revealed that some of JPMorgan’s managers expressed concerns over the transfers, Bloomberg reports.

Consequently, lawyers for JPMorgan have resolved at the end of a London court hearing held on Thursday to expose everyone involved in the decisions on the payments.

Bloomberg reports that the trial is expected to commence in early 2022.

The Federal Government had indicted the foreign bank in a lawsuit filed in London. Specifically, the FG had accused it of not carrying out due diligence before transferring the suspicious sums to Dan Etete. The funds were transferred between 2011 to 2013 from government accounts to Dan Etete; who had been convicted of money laundering. Indeed, the FG says JPMorgan ignored a number of red flags while approving the transactions.

The current administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has insisted that the contract; which was awarded to explore the deep waters off the Gulf of Guinea was corrupt.

Roger Masefield, counsel to the Nigerian government, had previously told the judge that JPMorgan was being unresponsive about its decision-making process. In the legal filings, he cited a JPMorgan manager saying in 2013 tha;t “there were lessons to learn” from an earlier payment. The bank also filed six suspicious transaction reports to British authorities.

Masefield insists that the identity of the decision makers, who authorised the transfers to Dan Etete, will go a long way to resolving the dispute.M

Meanwhile, the FG has also disclosed that it will hold JPMorgan responsible for the debacle.

“This claim will move forward and the Federal Republic of Nigeria will hold JP Morgan accountable for its central role in the fraud,’’ the statement reads in part.

The FG alleges that the fraud reached the highest levels during the Goodluck Jonathan administration. However, the ex-President denies any wrongdoing.

Obaseki: Why ADC may have collapsed – Medical doctor

A medical doctor has disclosed that the dramatic collapse of an Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, may have been due to a lack of oxygen to the brain, described in medical terms as cerebral hypoxia.

1st News reports that the incident occurred on Thursday during the inauguration of Obaseki for his second term.

Equally important, the inauguration took place at the Tennis Court of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City. 4wardwego reports that the ADC, who seemed unsteady on his feet, had subsequently seen his legs give away. The incident happened at around 12noon when Obaseki was delivering an appreciation speech after the Oath of Office was administered on him.

The Oath of Office was administered by the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Esther Edigin.

The medical doctor, said on condition of anonymity on the matter, says the ADC may have been discomfited by his dressing as well as the weather.

‘‘The brain needs a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients to function properly. Cerebral hypoxia occurs when enough oxygen is not getting to the brain. If you observe the ADC closely, you will notice that he was fully kitted and the weather was probably humid.

‘‘In addition, he was wearing a nose mask which is essentially a nod to the guidelines on COVID-19. And by virtue of his training and particular assignment, he was meant to remain on his feet, in that position, until the end of Obaseki’s inauguration. These factors may have resulted in a drop in the oxygen supply to the brain,’’ he volunteered.

The doctor, who made light of the ADC’s collapse, says it may not be due to a major health condition but just an episode of fainting.

‘‘Fainting, also known as syncope, is a sudden and temporary loss of consciousness. It is not something to panic about as it is quite common. As stated earlier, this usually occurs due to a lack of oxygen reaching the brain.’’

4wardwego reports that the ADC was assisted by other aides of Gov. Obaseki who noticed his state.

Meanwhile, a number of governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were in attendance at the inauguration. They include Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike; Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal; Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State and Duoye Diri of Bayelsa State.

Also present was the National Chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus and other key party officials.
