Soyinka slams NBC over query issued to Channels TV on alleged anti-Buhari interview

The renowned Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, has berated the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission over its harassment of Channels TV and its journalists for the airing of an alleged anti-Buhari interview involving the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom.

However, in his reaction during a journalists conference on Friday, August 27, Soyinka slammed the move by the NBC which is akin to “a media war.”

“Who decides professionalism? Is it NBC or mass communication fora? It is Channels TV; it can be anyone. This is the first time I am seeing a kind of query the media is getting. This is one of the most semi-illiterate queries that I have ever seen. Next time, those letters should be thrown into the garbage bin. This should be stopped as soon as possible.

“We have a responsibility to tell the government that next time any media institution is sanctioned on this trivial or ludicrous ground, we will fulfill our responsibility by mobilising the nation to boycott all government media and we shall wage this media war against the government.

“Decree Number 4 has no place in a democracy and it is about time we emphasise that both in language and in the act,” he said.

The Nobel laureate also criticised last Saturday’s carnival-like wedding of President Buhari’s son, Yusuf, in Kano, saying it was wrong to have organised the wedding in that manner when some school children were in the kidnappers’ den.

Soyinka said: “There was a carnival of a wedding in Kano; the president’s child was getting married. But some schoolchildren are kidnapped. This is not what I understand of leadership. I am not saying the president’s children should not get married. I had made the mistake of thinking it would have been sufficient to give these children money and say go to Dubai and have a good time there.

“He should set an example. The president seems not to hear things. Virtually the nation is screaming we do not want open cattle grazing. Then comes a new version of RUGA with the president sending his agent out to go and map out grazing routes. So, why is this president obsessed about something that is being rejected?

“The obsession to the extent that people who are rational begin to wonder if it is all about cattle or there is an agenda we don’t know about. Conspiracy theories abound when the leadership is pursuing interest against the people.”

Governor Lalong Reassures Plateau People of Dealing with Criminals, Killers and Evildoers

Governor Lalong Reassures Plateau People of Dealing with Criminals, Killers and Evildoers, In all the recent attacks, arrests have been made and justice will be done.

The Executive Governor of Plateau State & chairman Northern Governor’s forum, Hon. Simon Bako Lalong, made this statement at the Nigeria inter religious council (NIREC) stakeholders meeting in Abuja, 26th august 2021. Following the recent attack on Yelwa Zangam village of Jos North Local Government where many people were gruesomely murdered and properties destroyed.

Lalong commend the Co-Chairmen of the Council, Rev. Dr. Samson Ayokunle, CAN National President and His Eminence Alhaji Saad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and Chairman, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs for providing the desired leadership and remaining firm in the face of daunting challenges.

In his statement:

“As religious, traditional and political leaders, we must work hard to provide the leadership that guides people to isolate crimes from religious, ethnic or political affiliations. After all, no religion promotes hate, killing, kidnapping, stealing, destruction and intolerance. It is only when we treat criminals as criminals that we can overcome the level of insecurity we are facing in Nigeria today”.

It is rather unfortunate and highly disappointing that some religious leaders and their followers use the pulpit to incite, provoke and propagate hate, reprisals, as well as attempt to justify the actions of criminals rather than condemn it. Let me again reiterate that crime has no religion, tribe or ethnicity. Rather, evidence has shown that criminals unite across these lines to plan and execute their evil plans. It is when they are apprehended and being brought to justice that their sponsors play the ethno-religious card to curry sympathy for them and seek to set them free.

Governor Lalong went further to explain the reason behind the 24-hour curfew imposed on Jos North Local Government LGA of the State

“The past weeks in Plateau State have been very challenging as we have witnessed resurgence of attacks on innocent citizens leading to the loss of many lives and destruction of properties. While we continue to take security measures to deal with the criminals, such attacks are easily given ethnic or religious colouration.

Such unfortunate narratives tend to overshadow the criminal conduct as some try to brand a whole ethnic or religious group either as culprits or victims. This further fuels tensions and passions among sympathisers of either faith or ethnic group, leading to more unrest. The criminals use this advantage to hide, escape and become more audacious to commit more crimes.

That was why we had to reinstate a 24-hour curfew on Jos North Local Government after the attacks that took place in Yelwa Zangam village of that Local Government where many people were gruesomely murdered and properties destroyed. We took that decision in order to prevent criminals from taking advantage of the situation to loot and begin to target places of worship and other facilities”

Furthermore, Lalong draw attention to the negative use of the social media which is being exploited to create panic, spread hate and incite people. In fact, we have seen people glorifying or justifying crime in the social media space. I call on the regulatory bodies as well as well-meaning Nigerians to rise up to the occasion and deal with the matter.

He also like to call on the leadership of NIREC to again step up its sensitization among adherents of the two religions by engaging the clergy on the need to avoid sermons and comments that attempt to justify crimes. We must all rise in unity against criminals or be ready to become victims on the long run.

Lalong urge NIREC to pray for Plateau State as the Government are doing everything possible to address the situation. He said, they are isolating the few criminals that want to return the State to the days of agony and we shall deal with them. In all the recent attacks, arrests have been made and justice will be done. Plateau is still the Home of Peace and Tourism and welcomes everyone with good intentions.

In the meantime the state house of assembly has directed all Local Government Chairmen to suspend their planned recruitment of Adhoc Staff and instead recruit 200 Vigilante Personnel in each Local Government Area to boost and argument Local Intelligence Gathering

While calling on Traditional Rulers to look inward and release the Local Security design to protect Plateau people as well as reinforce the Vigilante, Hunters and local wise men to defend themselves the lawmakers have called on Plateau People to practically stand up and defend themselves and their communities, as the conventional security design is no longer guaranteeing their safety as a people.

The house also commended “the youths on the Plateau for sustained coordinated and organized campaigns against the killings and as well the courage to make it go viral by sending strong messages to the world using the dead bodies of the mayhem on the social media and the streets of Jos; the display of the corpses in the House is a sign that they recognized the authority of the House of Assembly as an institution that can speak for the people. We greatly appreciate that action”.

Civil Servant Commits Suicide after Killing Wife With Hammer in Bayelsa

A 40 years old man, Patrick Markson, has thrown the residents of Odede Street, off Tombia Amassoma road in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, into a mournful mood after he killed his wife with a sledge hammer and thereafter committed suicide.

The incident happened on Thursday morning.

The deceased Markson, who was identified as a civil servant working with the Yenagoa Local Government Area Council, reportedly hit the wife’s head with a sledged hammer while in her deep sleep, and watched her bleed to death.

He thereafter drank poisonous substances suspected to be a dangerous insecticide known as Sniper and lay close to the bleeding corpse of his wife and died.

The 35 years old wife, simply identified as Hannah Markson, is from the Okotiama community in Gbarain Clan, Yenagoa, the state capital.

4wardwego blog gathered that the deceased couple, who had six children together, had been having marital issues for some weeks now and could not resolve them.

Some family members claimed the dispute bothered on money realised from a contract handed to the husband by some of his wife’s relatives.

The elder sister to the deceased wife, Mrs Boufuru Timipre, described her sister as gentle and had no time for conflicts, “Yesterday we were frying garri, and the husband called me that he wanted to speak with my sister if we were together, and I told him that when I got to where she was, I would pass the message.

“On reaching her, I told her and immediately we tried reaching him but we couldn’t, later he called again but I had left where she was. So, he told me to tell her to bring garri for home use.

“This morning, the son called me that the mum was seen dead and he wanted me to come. The dad too was dead. So when I got to their house I went straight to the room, and I saw them both lying on the bed dead, but I noticed a can of snipper by the bed and a big hammer.”

Uzodinma: Ohanaeze threatens to banish Imo Gov from region over open grazing

The apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has warned that it would excommunicate Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma if he withdraws from the ban on open grazing initiated by the Southern Governors’ Forum.

At a follow-up meeting on the issue on July 5 in Lagos, the governors set a September 1 deadline for all the states in the region to pass a law prohibiting open grazing.

However, Uzodinma after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Aso Rock Villa on Thursday, withdrew from the agreement of the governors, noting that Imo will not ban open grazing.

In its reaction to this development, the Ohanaeze secretary-general, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, in a statement, said the body had warned him on the dangers of such a decision.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide had warned the Governor of Imo State on the dangers of withdrawal from the ban on open grazing initiated by the Forum of Southern Governors, as the Imo Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma had attracted scourge of hatred, plagues, and curses on his government,” the statement said.

Ohanaeze said that Uzodinma’s absence from meetings of the Southern Governors’ Forum which held in Lagos and Asaba, raises suspicion of what they described as “an attempt to ambush the resolutions of southern governors.”

According to the organisation, “Our suspicion had been reinforced with the continued absence of Governor Hope Uzodinma in the meetings of southern governors in Asaba and Lagos, which was intentional and premeditated to ambush the resolutions of the southern governors, and he will never escape the venom of Ndigbo, as he will surely taste the retribution of God and wrath of the people as a confirmed saboteur and this will serve as a warning to any Igbo governor that will follow such decision will never escape the malevolence and venomous action of the people.”

The group further alleged that Uzodinma has become a tool in the hands of detractors who seek to “destabilise southern Nigeria” and warned that he must show repentance and rescind the decision to pull out from the ban on open grazing from September 1, 2021.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo admonished Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma to show repentance and rescind the decision to pull out from the ban on open grazing from 1st September 2021, he cannot afford to face the consequences of this decision, Uzodinma is now the tools our detractors are using to destabilise Southern Nigeria, but if he continues, he will be excommunicated from any Igbo gathering and ceremonies from 1st September 2021,” the statement concluded.

Matawalle urges FG to declare state of emergency on insecurity

Gov. Bello Matawalle of Zamfara, has urged the Federal Government to declare a State of Emergency on security.

The governor gave the advice when he received the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in-charge of Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara, Ali Janga, on a courtesy call on Wednesday, August 25, in Gusau.

Matawalle said declaring a state of emergency was the “only available avenue of ending the increasing security challenges at hand.”

In a statement issued by Malam Zailani Bappa, Special Adviser, Public Enlightenment, Media and Communications, the governor expressed concern over the incessant attacks on innocent communities in Zamfara and other states.

Matawalle told the visiting AIG that the current wave of insecurity was alarming and getting out of hand, as such the need to declare a state of emergency on security in the country.

“No one feels safe anymore and the only way to return the country on the path of sanity is to act out of the box,” he stressed.

The governor commended the federal government and security operatives in the country for their commitment to the fight against banditry.

He however said “extra effort is required to contain the growing security problems that are mounting by the day”.

“The problem in Zamfara state is quite unique from those in other places and therefore require very careful and constructive solutions to control it,” he added.

Matawalle told the AIG that his administration had never faltered in its support to security operatives and would continue to do so, to enable them succeed.

Janga, who was accompanied by the state Commissioner of Police, Ayuba Elkhana, commended Matawalle for his commitment to finding lasting solutions to the security problem in the state.

Janga said that without the support rendered by the state government, the entire work of the police in the state would have collapsed.
