Wife in court over alleged attempt to stab hubby

A businessman, Mr. Onyeka Jonathan, on Thursday dragged his wife, Gloria, before a Customary Court in Jikwoyi, Abuja, to seek divorce over an alleged attempt to kill him.

The petitioner, who resides in Jikwoyi, on the outskirts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), stated this in the divorce suit he filed against his wife before the court.

“I can’t continue to live under the same roof with this woman. She wants to kill me. There was a little misunderstanding between us. She ran to the kitchen and picked up a knife to stab me.

‘’Luckily, I escaped.

“I had to scale the fence, to escape from her. I beg this honourable court to put an end to the marriage between me and my wife before she kills me,” he said.

The petitioner also narrated to the court how his wife had told him that she belonged to an evil spirit; adding that the spirit often controlled her.

The respondent, Mrs Gloria, who is a civil servant, in her defence, denied all the allegations. However, she prayed the court to dissolve the marriage.

“I am fed up with this fruitless marriage. I am treated with disdain because I am barren,’’ she stated.

However, the Presiding Judge, Labaran Gusau, adjourned the matter until September  29, for judgment.

In other unrelated news, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, Minister of Works and Housing, has said that Federal Government (FG) houses nationwide would be allocated through online applications.

Fashola stated this in an interview with journalists on Thursday, September 23, 2021 in Bauchi.

He made this known during his inspection of houses under the FG housing project. Further, the Minister said very soon the process of allocation would start through online applications by the beneficiaries.

“The process is going to be on an online platform. The form will be online and pay online, fill them. You don’t need to give anything under the table. It is first come, first served, that is why it takes a little while.

“We also noticed some dampness and drainage issues in the completed houses. Our facility manager would address them and find a way of draining the water for the beneficiaries,” he said.

CBN set to roll out e-Naira on Oct 1st

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is set to roll out the e-Naira digital currency on Friday, October 1, 2021.

This was disclosed by the Director of Information Technology, CBN, Rukiya Mohammed, on Wednesday.

She said the apex bank has concluded plans to launch the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) on October 1. Mohammed disclosed this in a webinar, themed “Digital currency and the prospects of CBDC in Nigeria”; organised by the committee of e-Business in industry Heads Nigeria (CeBIH).

Further, Mohammed said that the use of digital payment was rising; while cash payment was declining both in Nigeria and globally. She added that over 85 per cent of Central Banks worldwide were considering digital currency; while stating that the CBN was also innovative to cope with global trends.

“CBDC would contribute to macro-economic growth in the country. If people adopt more of the usage of the e-naira, it would enhance more data to formulate macro-economic policies.

“Also, when more countries have their own digital currencies; it would increase exchange of currency and be able to build cross border trade at lower cost. Even though Nigeria has a good payment system, this would also improve Nigeria’s payments efficiency,’’ she said.

Equally important, she said the CBN has partnered with a lot of expert digital currency technology providers; such as MasterCard, who came up with the design and would soon publish the design.

“CBN would focus on low amount payments at the introductory stage, instant settlement with low cost. CBDC would be legal tender with one e-naira equivalent to one naira which shows fundamental differences between CBDC and cryptocurrencies,” she said.

Also speaking, Dr. Adesola Adedutan, Managing Director, First Bank Nigeria, said that the Central Bank of Nigeria CBDC was a game changer; noting that it would provide an alternative payment system and would radically transform the payment landscape.

Adedutan, who was represented by FBN’s deputy chief executive, Mr Francis Soba, said CBDC provides a platform for the government to leverage blockchain technology to maintain a centralized and institutional role over of the currency.

‘’It should be noted that there are significant differences between CBDCs and cryptocurrencies,” he said.

Obasanjo slams ‘foolish’ borrowing by FG to service recurrent expenditure

Former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, has expressed his displeasure at the way the Federal Government is taking loans.

According to the ex-president, borrowing for recurrent expenditure is ‘foolish’.

In a video interview posted on Channel’s Television Facebook page on Sunday, September 19, Obasanjo said that borrowing and accumulating debt for the next generations to come is criminal.

Obasanjo said, “If you want to build a commercial house and you go and borrow money, and you have 50 per cent of your own money and you borrow 50 per cent and in five years, you pay the 50 per cent that you borrowed. That is a wise thing to do. But if you have to go and borrow money for you to be able to feed yourself and your family, that is a stupid thing to do.

“So, if we are borrowing for recurrent expenditure, it is the height of foolery. If we are borrowing for development that can pay itself, that is understandable; then how long will it pay itself? But we are borrowing and accumulating debt for the next generation and the next generation after them, it is criminal, to put it mildly. What are we borrowing for?

“When I came into government and was elected President, we were spending $3.5bn to service debt, and even with that, our quantum of debt was not going down.”

The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has borrowed a total of N21tn within six years.

Data from the Debt Management Office showed that at the end of March 2021, Nigeria’s public debt hit a total of N33.12tn, which means in the last six years under the President, the country’s debt rose by N21tn.

As of the end of June 2015, one month after the present regime came into power, the country’s debt profile stood at N12.12tn.

It also means that the country’s debt profile has risen by 173.27 per cent within the six-year period.
