NEF insists on power retention in North, rejects power shift

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has said that Northern Nigeria will continue to ‘rule’ Nigeria because they have the numbers and majority of the vote.

This position was stated by the Director of Publicity and Advocacy of the NEF, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, while speaking at the Maitama Sule Lecture Series organized by the students’ wing of the Coalition of Northern Groups, held at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, on Saturday, September 18.

“We will lead Nigeria the way we have led Nigeria before whether we are President or Vice President, we will lead Nigeria. We have the majority of the votes and democracy says vote whom you want. Why should we accept a second class position when we know we can buy a form and contest for first class and we will win?

“Why does anybody need to threaten us and intimidate us? We will get that power but be humble because power comes from God. We inherited the leadership and being honest is not being stupid.

“The North has pride; we are humble enough to know that we are going to run Nigeria with other people but we are not going to play second fiddle to anybody. We may not have the most robust economy, there are people who are trying to strangulate us even more than we are being strangled,” the NEF noted.

His statements are coming amidst strong debates about the Nation’s rotational leadership arrangement between the North and South.

Meanwhile, Kingsley Moghalu, former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has stated that foreign direct investment (FDI) can help lift a country out of poverty if it is targeted at the real economy.

Moghalu made this call on Saturday, September 19, during a US-Nigeria investment summit in New York.

According to the former CBN official, the most important requirements for FDI to successfully contribute to real development in a country like Nigeria are the presence of a well-educated workforce and infrastructure.

Moghalu noted that Nigeria needs to adopt a strategy and incorporate political risk guarantees into major FDI agreements.

“We all know that Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy, and with a population of 200 million people; one with huge potential for growth. It is therefore a country of significant potential for foreign direct investment and foreign investors.

“But, for several reasons including a weak macroeconomic environment, policy inconsistency and the absence of a well-defined strategy for FDI as a component of economic growth strategy, FDI into Nigeria has declined markedly in the past several years,” Moghalu said.

JOHESU issues two-week strike ultimatum to FG over payment of allowances

Following their suspension of the strike action, the Joint Health Sectors Unions (JOHESU) and Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations (AHPA) on Saturday, September 18, issued a fresh 15-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to meet their demands.

The unions had on September 2, issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Federal Government threatening to embark on a strike billed to have commenced with effect from 12am Saturday, September 18, 2021, over unmet demands.

However, rising from the emergency meeting of the expanded National Executive Council (NEC) of the JOHESU and AHPA on Friday, the unions urged the Federal Government to accelerate the process and fulfill their demands within a fresh 15 days ultimatum.

Their demands were contained in a communique signed by Mathew Ajorutu, acting National General, JOHESU, and was issued at the end of the meeting of the expanded NEC.

The expanded NEC comprised the Presidents and General Secretaries of affiliate unions and professional associations; NEC members of affiliate unions; and JOHESU Chairmen and Secretaries at the State and Branch levels.

The NEC-in-Session said it critically appraised the reports of JOHESU negotiation and conciliation meetings with the Federal Government; since the declaration of the trade dispute through the 15-day strike notice issued on September 2.

The communique partly reads, “The Federal Ministry of Health should ensure speedy circularisation of all establishment; and welfare matters as agreed during negotiation meetings.

“The Federal Government should ensure that the new data for the computation of the adjusted Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for JOHESU members be completed and submitted to the “High-Level Body” (HLB) of the FG not later than Wednesday, 22nd September 2021 as agreed.

“NEC-in-Session urges the Federal Government to ensure that the “High-Level Body” (HLB) complete; and submit the computation of the adjusted CONHESS for inclusion in the 2022 budget; within the 30th September 2021 submission window.

“NEC-in-Session urges the Federal Government to reciprocate the patriotic humanitarian gesture of JOHESU; in the interest of the larger Nigerian masses; to expeditiously resolve all the demands within the fifteen days window,” it added.

It further said it received and examined reports of congresses held at various health facilities; across the country on the mobilisation for the strike action.

Man nabbed while having sex with goat

A man has been arrested for the offence of bestiality after being caught having sex with a goat.

The incident occurred in Gwaram Local Area of Jigawa State.

Equally important, the bizarre development was confirmed by the Jigawa State Police Command. Spokesman of the command, Lawan Shiisu, disclosed that the suspect, a 25-year-old man, was caught in the act.

He made this known in a statement released to newsmen on Friday, September 17, 2021.

However, the identity of the culprit was not disclosed.

Shiisu, nevertheless, stated that the man was arrested at about 1am by police operatives who were on patrol in Gwaram town.  The man, aresident of Kunnadi quarters, was arrested by the patrol team while allegedly having intercourse with the goat.

“At about 0100hrs, police from Gwaram Divisional Headquarters; while on patrol in Gwaram and its environs, arrested one 25-year-old resident of Kunnadi quarters; while having intercourse with a goat,” he said.

Further, Shiisu revealed that investigations were ongoing into the development; even as he noted that the suspect would be charged to court thereafter.

In other news, a Swedish woman, Maria Grette, who flew into Nigeria to confront a man who scammed her, has ended up falling in love with him.

Grette, an artist, had met Johnny, the Nigerian con artist, 12 years ago after setting up an online dating profile.

She was 62 at the time and divorced.

“I received messages telling me that people had contacted me, but I never looked at them,” she told the BBC.

Then one day, the divorced woman logged into the site and responded to an email from a man she refers to as “Johnny.”

“I still don’t know why,” she said. “It was like a sudden impulse happening before I could stop it.”

Johnny described himself to the woman as a 58-year-old from Holland, raised in South Carolina; currently working in England. His son was a student at Manchester University. The two exchanged emails for a while and he eventually called her from a UK number. He had an accent that she couldn’t place but she didn’t let it worry her.

Datong: Army rescues Major abducted at NDA, kills scores of bandits

The Nigerian Army has rescued Major Christopher Datong, a ranking officer who was kidnapped by bandits during an attack on the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in August.

Scores of bandits were also reportedly killed during the operation to rescue Datong.

The development was disclosed by the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations 1 Division, Nigerian Army, Colonel Ezindu Idimah.

4wardwego blog reported that Major Datong had been abducted by bandits during a bold attack on the NDA located in Kaduna; which left a number of other officers dead. The bandits had subsequently been involved in negotiations with the family of the kidnapped officer for the payment of a ransom.

It remains unclear what came out of the negotiations; especially as Datong had remained in the custody of his captors.

However, Nigerian Army troops had rescued the abducted officer on Friday, September 17, 2021.

Idimah revealed that Datong had sustained a minor injury in the rescue operation. However, he added that the mission led to the destruction of several identified bandits’ camps in Afaka-Birnin Gwari areas. Also, he disclosed that scores of bandits were killed during the operation; which, he stated, took place in the late hours of September 17, 2021.

In addition, the Army scribe had revealed that the Division; in conjunction with the Air Task Force, Department of State Services (DSS)  and other security agencies; had swung into action by conducting operations in the Afaka general area to find and rescue the officer; after a directive by the Chief of Army Staff.

“The troops arrived at a camp suspected to be the location where Maj CL Datong was being held. At the camp, the troops exchanged fire with the bandits and overwhelmed them with superior fire.

“In the process, the gallant troops were able to rescue the abducted officer. However, the officer sustained a minor injury but has been treated in a medical facility and handed over to NDA for further action,” he said.

The Army commended other sister agencies; including the Nigeria Air Force (NAF), DSS, the Nigerian Police Force (NPF); as well as other Nigerians for their contributions towards the success of the mission.
