Hisbah arrests man who puts himself for sale at N20m

The Islamic police in Kano State known as Hisbah have arrested a 26-year-old man, Aliyu Na Idris, who was trending on social media last weekend for putting himself up for sale due to what he called poverty.

This was confirmed on Wednesday, October 27, by the Hisbah Commander, Harun Ibn Sina, who added that Aliyu Na Idris’ actions were forbidden.

“Yes we arrested him on Tuesday and he spent the night with us. What he did is forbidden in Islam, you can’t try to sell yourself no matter your condition or situation,” the commander said.

The arrested tailor, who had been speaking to journalists before his arrest by Hisbah, said he was in a huge financial mess, hence his decision to put a N20 million price tag on his person promising to wholeheartedly serve his buyer.

“The decision to sell myself was due to poverty, I plan to give my parents N10 million when I eventually get a buyer, pay N5 million as tax to the government, give N2 million to anyone who helped me get a buyer and keep the remaining for daily upkeep,” Aliyu told journalists in Kano before his arrest.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum and Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, has accused politicians of fuelling crisis in his state.

He disclosed this on Tuesday, October 26, during Day Two of the Nigerian Economic Summit in Abuja where participants had gathered to deliberate on the nation’s security, education, and politics.

According to Lalong, the governors of the 19 northern states are in full support of the creation of state police to tackle the numerous security challenges facing their domain.

He noted that Plateau has long been known as a state of peace and tourism; before some political actors started creating problems in the state.

“Plateau is codenamed the home of peace and tourism. Then all of a sudden, what happened? I will say also that part of it is the role of political actors,” he said.

“You see people bringing issues like ethnicity, religion-dominated issues; and so we were now beginning to see ourselves as enemies.

“If I am a Christian, I don’t want a Moslem to come near me or I belong to this tribe; I don’t want that tribe to come in.”

e-Naira: President Buhari launched eNaira

President Buhari has on Monday launched the Nigeria digital currency “eNaira”.

The eNaira wallet offers a great way of making purchases with retailers on-site, transferring or sending money while tracking rewards programs. You can link the e-wallet to your bank account or pay as you go with a prepay option. In addition, the embedded security token system makes your information unreadable to fraudsters because tokens are randomly generated every time you make a payment.

The eNaira is the Nigerian digital currency that is issued and regulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria. Its functionality delivers speedy, safe, and simple trading and transaction opportunities to customers and end-users:

It is exchanged peer to peer.

It is universal – anybody can hold it.

It does not yield any interest.

For more information visit the eNaira official website on www.enaira.gov.ng

This development came in after the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had quashed the notice; ruling that the CBN can proceed with the implementation of the eNaira. The court, presided over by Justice Taiwo Abayomi Taiwo; gave the ruling in the light of the importance of the Central Bank Digital Currency [CBDC]. The ruling came as the defendants’ counsel urged the court to dismiss the plaintiff’s motion to halt the launch.

Police re-arrest 13 fleeing inmates from Oyo Prison

The Osun Police Command, on Sunday said 13 of the inmates who escaped from Abologo Correctional Centre in Oyo, on Friday, have been re-arrested in Ejigbo, Osun.

This was disclosed by SP Yemisi Opalola, Osun Police Spokesperson.

Opalola confirmed the development to newsmen; adding that the inmates were arrested on Saturday night. Further, she disclosed that they would soon be transferred to the Police State Criminal Investigation Department.

“God has helped the Command to re-arrest 13 escaped prisoners from Abologo Correctional Center Oyo, Oyo State.’’

Reports indicate that the inmates were wandering in the town on Saturday when policemen on patrol arrested them.

Earlier, the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola had promised that all escaped inmates from the Oyo correctional facility would be re-arrested. He spoke during his visit to the correctional facility.

Aregbesola equally said 446 of the 907 escapees from the correctional centre had been recaptured; whilst 69 never left the facility, adding that 392 inmates are still at large.

In other news, the Police Command in Ebonyi on Sunday repelled an attack by suspected gunmen on its divisional headquarters in Unwana, Afikpo North Local Government area of the state.

This was disclosed by the Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Loveth Odah.

Odah made this known in a statement in Abakaliki. The PPRO said the police also killed one of the gunmen and recovered two AK-47 rifles; as well as other incriminating items when the hoodlums attacked the station on Sunday.

“At 0300hrs of today, 24th October, 2021; yet-to-be identified gunmen numbering about 35 attacked Unwana Divisional Headquarters in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

“The attackers were shooting sporadically at the policemen on duty, who immediately repelled the attack.

“In the gun battle that ensued, one of the hoodlums was killed…Two AK 47 rifles and other incriminating items were recovered. Other suspects escaped with bullet wounds. Regrettably, one police inspector attached to the division was seriously wounded. The police operational vehicles are intact.

“Investigation revealed that the deceased suspect had been on the police wanted list for various attacks on police stations.

“One of the recovered AK-47 rifles has been identified to be the rifle stolen from Ohaukwu Police Division early this month.

“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police Ebonyi, State Command, Mr Aliyu Garba, has embarked on on-the-spot assessment of the division and also ordered a manhunt on the fleeing hoodlums.

“The CP appeals to the law-abiding citizens of the state to promptly volunteer useful information to unravel the true identity of the fleeing gang members,” she stated.

e-Naira: Nigeria’s digital currency goes live today

Nigeria’s digital currency – the eNaira – goes live today, Monday, October 25, 2021.

The Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) will be unveiled by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Information from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says the eNaira will improve the payments system in Nigeria. In a statement made available to newsmen on Saturday, the CBN revealed that the eNaira will make financial transactions easier and seamless for every strata of the society.

Meanwhile, the digital currency will complement the physical naira.

In August, the CBN had selected Bitt Inc. as a technical partner to help create the digital currency. It announced plans to introduce the virtual currency four months after banning cryptocurrency transactions in February; describing it as a threat to the financial system.

4wardwego Blog reports that the CBN had earlier postponed its plan to launch the e-Naira.

The suspension came as a result of a court injunction over the implementation of the digital currency. However, a Federal High Court has now given the all-clear for the launch of the digital currency.

Equally important, the CBN had received a cease and desist notice over the use of the name “eNaira”. The notice came barely a couple of days before the launch of the digital currency; throwing a spanner in the works. The notice titled “Infringement of Trademark and Violation of Corporate Name Cease and Desist Notification to the Central Bank of Nigeria” was signed by Olakule Agbebi Esq for Olakule Agbebi & Co.

Specifically, the plaintiffs held that the name – “Enaira payment Solution Limited” had been incorporated since April 7, 2004.

Nevertheless, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)  had quashed the notice; ruling that the CBN can proceed with the implementation of the eNaira.

Although the court was reluctant in dismissing the motion; it held that the unveiling of eNaira may proceed on national interest and that the plaintiff will be adequately compensated.
