Police nabbed kidnapping gang of Father and Son in Plateau

Police nabbed kidnapping gang of Father and Son in Plateau

The end has come for a 60-year-old serial kidnapper, Usman Abubakar, and his 20-year-old son, Ishaku Usman, who specialized in kidnapping high-profile people in the country for ransom. He adopted the uncharitable business as his source of livelihood after realizing how lucrative it was.

Abubakar found it most convenient to recruit even his only son into the distasteful activity, thereby making it a family venture. He inflicted pain and agony on innocent Nigerians who got into his custody for no reason.

The kidnappers, who hail from Dorowan Maitimbi village in Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, were nabbed in Plateau State for their nefarious activities.

It was gathered that, apart from kidnapping, the suspected bandits also hire firearms to other criminal elements for operations. They confessed that they have been hiring firearms to their neighbours for rearing of cows and not for kidnapping operations.

Sadly, the duo met their Waterloo recently when the anti-kidnapping unit of the Plateau State Police Command bursted their hideout and arrested the syndicate in possession of firearms, while some of the conspirators who fled from the scene are still at large.

Police public relations officer, Alfred Alabo, who paraded the suspects for kidnapping, armed robbery and illegal possession of firearms, said they would be arraigned at the end of investigation.

He said: “The 60-year-old Usman Abubakar and his son, Ishaku Usman, were arrested for possession of prohibited firearms, armed robbery and kidnapping. Usman gives out firearms to his son who also rents them out to kidnappers.”

However, Usman Abubakar said: “I am not a kidnapper; I have never kidnapped anybody but have a rifle that we rent out to people for protection of their cows. This is what we have been doing for a long period of time for survival.

“I do the business with my son, he knows those who are interested in using the gun and he is the one who hires out the rifle and collects it back. There are occasions we collect N5,000 for a day sometimes N10,000, depending on how it would be used and how long it would be in their possession.”

Ishaku Usman, who spoke in police custody, corroborated his father on renting and hiring of rifles for external operations but denied that he was a kidnapper.

He said: “I have never kidnapped anybody but I collect firearms from my father for hiring. I have been doing this business for long. They use the rifles while rearing their cattle for protection.”

One of the suspects, Ali Musa, admitted that he had been hiring rifles from Ishaku Usman, but not for kidnapping activities. He claimed that he used the firearms to protect himself and his cattle from rustlers as they move from one location to another.

Ali, who made efforts to flee the scene of arrest, was shot in one of his legs, which led to his arrest by the police while two of his colleagues escaped.

“I was arrested because I hired their rifle. I was told to come and collect another one when I saw security operatives around me. I attempted to escape but I was shot in one of my legs and some of my members fled,” he said.

Alabo said the police would make Plateau uninhabitable for all criminal activities. He insisted that there would be no hiding place for kidnappers, gunrunners and other criminal elements in the state.

INEC blasts Binani for accusing commission of colluding with Gov Fintiri

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has refuted allegations that it met with representatives of the Adamawa State Government to rig the governorship race.

The denial followed a claim that its representatives, sent to oversee the governorship rerun, paid a midnight visit to the state government house with the apparent goal of rigging the results in favour of incumbent Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri.

Festus Okoye, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Committee on Information and Voter Education, refuted the charges in a statement on Thursday, April 20.

Okoye said, “The attention of the Commission has been drawn to a Press Statement by a candidate in the recently concluded Adamawa State Governorship election in which officials deployed for legitimate duty in the State were alleged to have undermined the electoral process after a discreet ‘nocturnal’ visit to the Government House and ostensibly met with one of the candidates in the election who gave them a list of ‘collation and returning officers’ deployed for the election.

“Ordinarily, the Commission does not join issues with partisan actors, particularly where no evidence has been provided.

“To set the record straight, no such visit or meeting took place let alone the compilation of any purported list of collation and returning officers. Such a meeting would have been contrary to the oath of neutrality that we all swore to.

“Moreover, every conscientious observer would have noticed that the Commission appointed and retained only one Returning Officer for the Governorship election who also doubled as the State Collation Officer for the Presidential Election. Like all Returning Officers nationwide, he was issued with a letter of appointment by the Commission and the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Adamawa State was duly informed.

“The list of Collation Officers was also forwarded to the State with every page of the list personally endorsed by the Chairman of the Commission well ahead of the arrival of the National Commissioners.”

The national commissioner further said the same press statement created the impression that the National Headquarters of the commission specifically targeted Adamawa state in its deployment of National Commissioners and other officials with the sole intention of influencing the outcome of the supplementary election held on Saturday 25th April 2023 and sidelining the REC.

He noted, “Nothing can be further from the truth. For the record, it has been the standard policy and practice of the Commission to deploy National Commissioners, RECs and other staff from the headquarters or neighboring States for supplementary or off-cycle elections where doing so is considered necessary.”

INEC nullifies Adamawa polls after REC announces Binani as winner

INEC nullifies Adamawa polls after REC announces Binani as winner

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that the announcement made by Yunusa Ari, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Adamawa State, declaring Aisha ‘Binani’ Dahiru winner of the governorship election, is ‘null and void’.

In a brief thread of tweets on Sunday, April 16, the electoral umpire through its National Commissioner, Information and Voter Education, Barr. Festus Okoye, said the election process was clearly not concluded before the announcement was made.

Mr Okoye added that the action of the REC is a usurpation of the power of the Returning Officer. “It is null, void and of no effect”.

The INEC Commissioner consequently stressed that following this action, the collation of results of the supplementary election has now been suspended.

The INEC REC in Adamawa State Yunusa Ari, on Sunday stirred controversy in the state’s governorship election when at about 9am he announced Aisha ‘Binani’ Dahiru, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the election.

His announcement elicited protests from members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) present at the state collation centre in Yola.

Before the collation exercise was suspended on Saturday night, results from 10 LGAs had been announced — and Binani was trailing Ahmadu Fintiri, the incumbent governor and PDP candidate.

The collation of results from the remaining 10 LGAs was expected to commence by 11am on Sunday, and Mele Lamido, the returning officer for the Adamawa governorship election, was not present when Ari announced Binani as the winner of the election.

According to the constitution, Lamido is the rightful official empowered to declare the winner of the election.

NPC outlines criteria for 2023 Census

National Population Commission, NPC has clarified that the Census questionnaire has no column for religion and ethnicity.

The commission made the clarification on Friday in Kano; when the National Publicity Committee on the 2023 Population and Housing Census paid an advocacy visit to Nigerian Television Authority, Kano.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the visit was; led by Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the Chairman of the committee and Minister of Information and Culture, represented by the Director General of the National Orientation Agency, Dr. Garba Abari.

Speaking on the speculations that Nigerians would be; asked questions on their faith and ethnic affiliation, a member of the committee, Dr. Isiaka Yahaya, said the commission was; not interested in such data.

NPC

Yahaya, who is also the commission’s Director of Public Affairs, maintained that issues of religion and ethnicity being peddled on social media were; mere distractions and without foundation.

” Since 1991 when the National Population Commission has been; conducting the census, we have never asked questions on ethnicity and religion.

” We didn’t do it in 1991, we didn’t do it in 2006 and we won’t do it now.

” The reason is; obvious. The two issues are very sensitive and have the capacity to; divert attention from the main issue of the census,” he said.

Similarly, the Director General of Voice of Nigeria, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, urged Nigerians not to see the census as a contest among ethnic groups.

He said the census was; only for planning purposes and not to confer an advantage on any group.

” For planning purposes, President Muhammadu Buhari said before he leaves office, he wants to deploy digital technology to conduct a headcount.

” The incoming president, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed, in planning with our resources, will know exactly how many Nigerians he is; planning for,” Okechukwu said.

Abari on his part commended the authorities of NTA for playing a critical role in the sensitization campaign for the headcount.

He reiterated that the headcount was; solely to obtain data for national development purposes and; urged the media to help tackle the twin scourge of fake news and misinformation.

The General Manager of NTA Kano, Sani Yusuf, expressed the readiness of NTA to support the sensitization campaign on the census.

He gave an assurance that the media house would produce jingles to aid the campaign as well as provide coverage of the exercise.

NAN reports that the committee also visited Pyramid FM, Kano, Radio Kano, and Triumph newspapers.
