Melaye: PDP formally announces former lawmaker as candidate for governor of Kogi

As the Peoples Democratic Party’s standard-bearer for the state’s November 11 governorship election, Dino Melaye has previously been introduced.

On May 3, in Lokoja, Kogi State’s capital, the ceremony was attended by the party leaders from the three senatorial districts of the state.

Melaye praised each party member for putting their trust in him and vowed not to let them down in his speech following his introduction to the party faithful.

Melaye asserted that Kogi shouldn’t be in poverty because the state is sitting high on a gold mine that has the potential to make its citizens tremendously wealthy.

“Over 42 mineral resources in Kogi State remain unexplored. If there are five Obajanas in the state, nothing is wrong. There is no justification for Ajaokuta not to be productive. We have no justification for relying on the federal allocation made each month. When I am elected governor via you in November, all of these things will come to an end, he declared.

“We have enormous resources and loose funds around the world that are just waiting to be accessed; all you need are the right conditions and creative ideas to do so,” he continued. I’ll leverage my connections to draw in investment from all over the world.

Melaye, a two-term senator who represented Kogi West, was elected on the April 15 delegates election having polled 313 votes to defeat his closest rival, Jabiru Usman, who polled 127 votes.

Also speaking during the ceremony, ex-governor Ibrahim Idris called on party faithful to rally behind Melaye who he described as a formidable personality who will bring the state out of the woods of the past seven years.

“To do this, there is the need to see ourselves on one big family and work together to install Dino Melaye in November,” Idris said.

180 minority representatives-elect join alliance to elect the next House speaker

Prior to the 10th National Assembly’s June inauguration, a coalition of roughly “180 members-elect” from opposition parties has been formed to elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The parties are the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and Young People Party (YPP). The major party is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Following their meeting on May 2, 2023, in the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, the “minority caucus” vowed in a statement to end the eight years of “misrule” by the incumbent All Progressives Congress (APC).

The communique was signed by the conveners including Fred Agbedi (PDP), Abdulmumin Jibrin (NNPP), Gaza Gbefwi (SDP), Dennis Agbo (LP), Idris Salman (ADC), Agbodike Pascal (APGA), Chinwe Nnabuife (YPP), amongst others.

They resolved as followed: “To Contest the office of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 10th House of Reps of the National Assembly.

“We have resolved to set up an eleven-man Committee to scout for a credible and acceptable candidate that would vie for those offices, and then actively seek the unification of Nigerians along ethno-religious lines.

“The Greater Majority with more than 180 elected Reps members (being over 50% of the elected member) will remain one indivisible coalition during the 10″ National Assembly, with the interest of the country as its driving force.

“That the greater Majority of the 10th National Assembly will be continually guided by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, with the collective interest of Nigerians being its major concern.

“To assure Nigerians not to lose hope due to the country’s current unpleasant situation, including the disunity plaguing the nation, which is the direct consequence of APC’s misrule, and that the Greater majority of the incoming 10″ National assembly will remedy these problems as a matter of priority.

“The Great majority will continue to unify the coalition of opposition parties so that it can be an effective check on the ruling party in order to safeguard the rule of law.”

In the just-concluded elections, the APC secured over 170 of the 360 seats in the green chamber, the highest by any party. The PDP came second with over 100 seats, LP with over 35 seats, the NNPP with about 20.

Many APC lawmakers have since indicated interest to emerge the next Speaker of the House. They include Benjamin Kalu, Ahmed Wase, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, Yusuf Gagdi, Aliyu Betara, Tajudeen Abbas, Abdulraheem Olawuyi, Sani Jaji, Princess Onuoha, amongst others.

However, the APC has not made its decision on zoning for the leadership of the 10th National Assembly known.

Tinubu praises Wike: “Without you, I wouldn’t have won the election.”

On May 3, the newly elected president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, praised Nyesome Wike, the governor of Rivers state, for his assistance during the election.

Wike’s ethics and morals were commended, and it was pointed out that the governor supported harmony and justice during the election.

Speaking during the opening of the Raumuokwuta/Rumuola flyover bridge in Port Harcourt, Tinubu said that Wike’s backing was essential to his victory.

In his own words: “I underwent a painful campaign, battled hard, had a lot of your support, and I won. True and accurate. I’d like to thank you, Nyesom, for helping me win. Without some structural support that is impossible to describe in a flyby, I couldn’t have done it”, he said.

“I recognize a man of principles in his excellency. He had the guts to stand by his conviction that the South should win the presidency, regardless of whose ox was put to death.

He is undoubtedly a man of great integrity; he chose to serve the needs of the country rather than his own. You championed justice, promoting fairness, harmony, and equality. Thank you,” added Tinubu.

Yunusa-Ari: Adamawa REC reveals reason for announcing Binani as Gov-Elect

Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the suspended resident electoral commissioner in Adamawa, says he does not regret announcing Aisha Binani as the winner of the April 15 governorship election in the state.

Yunusa-Ari had stirred controversy by declaring Aisha Binani Dahiru of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner when the collation of the results was yet to be completed.

The Independent National Electoral Commission declared the announcement null and void and summoned the REC to its headquarters in Abuja.

Subsequently, the electoral umpire wrote to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to prosecute Yunusa-Ari over the electoral infraction.

President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the suspension of the Adamawa REC pending the completion of an investigation by the police.

A day later, INEC said it was not aware of the whereabouts of Yunusa-Ari.

Speaking in an interview published by BBC Hausa on Tuesday, Yunusa-Ari said he wasn’t offered money by anyone to make the announcement.

The suspended REC said he never went into hiding, adding that he will honour the invitation of the police.

“I didn’t ask Binani and Fintiri for a single penny. It is against my religion to collect money from someone to help him do anything and I swear to God, claims that I was offered N2 billion are just baseless allegations and rumours,” Yunusa-Ari said.

“Where will I take N2 billion to? I saw it on social media that I was offered N2 billion.

“I don’t regret announcing Binani winner of the election. Anything you do according to the law, you won’t regret it.

“I wrote a letter to INEC which they said they won’t accept — but I’m sure they’ve accepted and the invitation sent by the police is mandatory for me to honour it.

“I never went into hiding. I will honour the invitation of the police.”
