Reps issue warrant of arrest on CBN Governor, AGF, others

The Committee on Public Petitions in the House of Representatives has authorized the arrest of Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, the Central Bank Governor, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Madein, the Accountant General of the Federation, and 17 others. This action is a result of their failure to attend the committee’s proceedings and respond to inquiries regarding their operational activities.

This followed the adoption of a motion by Rep Fred Agbedi (PDP-Bayelsa) at the committee’s hearing on Tuesday.

Presenting the motion, Agbedi emphasized that issuing the arrest warrant had become necessary due to the uncooperative stance of the individuals invited. He pointed out that despite being invited four times, the CEOs failed to participate in the parliamentary proceedings.

Agbedi asserted that, in accordance with the parliament’s adherence to schedules, the Inspector General of Police should execute the warrant of arrest to compel the CEOs to appear before the committee. He emphasized that the Speaker, Rep Tajudeen Abbas, should ensure due diligence in this process.

In response, the Committee Chairman, Rep Micheal Irom (APC-Cross River), ruled that the Inspector General should guarantee the CEOs’ presence before the committee on December 14.

Earlier, the petitioner, Mr Fidelis Uzowanem, grounded the petition on the 2021 report of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI). Uzowanem explained that upon scrutinizing the report, they uncovered a consolidation of fraudulent activities in the oil and gas industry dating back to 2016.

He highlighted that the proposed 2024 budget of 27.5 trillion could be adequately funded from the recoverable amounts identified in the NEITI report. According to him, the report exposed clandestine transactions in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), involving cash payments to companies that did not produce crude oil, disguised as amounts meant for crude oil production.

Plateau: APC has no structure not PDP – Ex-Gov Jang

According to Jonah David Jang, a former governor of Plateau State, the All Progressive Congress (APC) is the party without a structure in the Plateau, not the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Jang explained that this was because the APC never held an election to choose its state executive committee, and the party’s nominee for governor in the 2023 election was chosen entirely by hand by the state branch of the party.

Speaking on Tuesday in Jos against the backdrop of the Appeal Court’s ruling, which resulted in the removal of the party’s elected members from both the National and State Assembly, the former governor referred to the rulings as miscarriages of justice.

According to Jang, the former governor Simon Lalong ought to face consequences for depriving the APC of a hierarchy when he forced the current party chairman upon the party in the State.

The former governor said that even though the Court had its say, God is the ultimate arbiter while extending a heartfelt “thank you visit” to Musa Dachung Bagos, the recently elected House of Representatives member for the Jos East/Jos South federal constituency, for his fatherly support of his goals.

Bagos was one of the PDP members whose elections ruled void by the Appeal Court since the party had no organisational structure in the state when they were nominated to run for various seats.

He said, “Who said we don’t have structure. In fact, it’s the APC that does not have structure because the APC chairman did not buy any form. He was handpicked by Lalong. Even their candidate was not validly nominated. And that’s why the members walked out during their congress because there was no congress at all but they were imposed on their members.”

The former governor further denied that the party’s issues stemmed from his intractable disagreements with Gen. Jeremiah Useni’s PDP side, arguing that there was initially nothing to settle because the PDP lacked a faction.

He accused some members of PDP as being moles for APC

Jang said, “What do you call irreconcilable differences. There was nothing to reconcile because PDP is one. Let me tell you, some of those elders talking about structure had one leg in PDP and the other in APC. They were moles in PDP.

Jang said the PDP had since obeyed the court order by organising the second congress, adding, “It was there all over that we obeyed the court by conducting the second election. Even Bitrus Kaze congratulated Chris Hassan, the eventual winner

Gov. Mutfwang Begins Payment of Death Benefits and Gratuities Since 1985

Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has given approval for the disbursement of gratuities, death benefits, and pension arrears amounting to approximately N20 billion, covering the period from 1985.

Emphasizing his administration’s dedication to the welfare of workers, Governor Mutfwang insists that every worker deserves their rightful wages. It was on this account that he said certain amount of money would be set aside monthly for the payment of gratuities, death benefits and pension arrears.

The Governor made these remarks on Monday during the opening of the Plateau State Government/Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) retreat on effective social dialogue for industrial relations. The event, held at Jonggrand Hotel, Bukuru, Plateau State, focusing on the “Time is Now” mantra.

“The welfare of civil servants is of utmost importance; thus, we have cleared the backlog of inherited salaries spanning over four months. We are current with salary payments and have approved the disbursement of the 90% Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and a 75% hazard allowance.

“Likewise, we have granted a 75% Hazard Allowance to other health workers, including the Joint Health Workers Union (JOHESU) and the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives. Additionally, measures are underway to address longstanding issues such as gratuities, death benefits, and pension arrears, with the last gratuity payment made in 1985,” he said.

Governor Mutfwang highlighted the significance of training and retraining of civil servants for efficient service delivery. He pledged his administration’s commitment to initiatives aimed at enhancing the performance of the workforce.

“Under my leadership, we will consistently uphold the values and ethics of the civil service, fostering an environment for all sectors to thrive. Our guiding principles include fairness, justice, and equity in our treatment of every worker.

“The time is now for mutual benefit, industrial harmony, worker welfare, training, prompt payment of salaries, and promotions. With God’s grace and your cooperation, we shall seamlessly achieve these goals,” he stated.

Also speaking, the Head of Service, Plateau State, Mrs. Rauta Dakok, explained that the joint retreat is the first of its kind in Plateau. She expressed optimism that the training would enrich the workforce and foster a mutually beneficial relationship between the government and union leaders in oder to provide them with insights into policy development to enhance the civil service.
