Nigeria officially tops South Africa as Africa’s biggest economy

Nigeria, the world’s most populous black nation, has officially been confirmed as Africa’s biggest economy; topping and beating back perennial rivals, South Africa into second place. Indeed, Nigeria’s confirmation as the continent’s biggest economy came as South Africa slipped into a second recession in two years.

Bloomberg opines that the answer to the question of whether South Africa or Nigeria; the two countries that account for almost half of sub-Saharan Africa’s gross domestic product; is the biggest economy on the continent has long depended on which exchange rate you use for Nigeria.

However, it states that now, both the official naira rate of 306 per dollar and the weaker market exchange rate; of around 360 that almost all investors use put Nigeria tops.

Further, it revealed that economic growth in Nigeria beat forecasts in Q4; helping the economy to expand the most in four years in 2019 as oil output increased.

In addition, the Central Bank of Nigeria took steps to boost credit growth. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Nigeria stood at $476 billion or $402 billion, depending on the rate used.

Recession strikes, takes South Africa further behind Nigeria

On the other hand, South Africa’s economy went in the opposite direction.

South Africa slumped into a second recession in consecutive years; contracting more than projected in the fourth quarter as power cuts weighed on output and business confidence. For the full year, expansion was 0.2%, the least since the global financial crisis; and even less than the Central Bank and government estimated. Based on an average rand-dollar exchange rate of 14.43 for the year, GDP was $352 billion.

In addition, the report states that the Nigerian economy will continue to grow faster based on projections. While the International Monetary Fund cut its forecast for Nigeria’s 2020 growth; to 2% from 2.5% last month due to lower oil prices; South Africa’s GDP is forecast to expand only 0.8%.

Canadian tourist marries villager who was dumped by his ex-wife for being poor

A Canadian tourist has reportedly tied the knot with a villager after he was dumped by his ex-wife because of his poor living condition.

Indeed, in a moment everything can change for the better. A couple of months prior to the arrival of the caucasian Canadian lady in the yet-to-be-identified village, this particular man was neglected by his wife. She left him because he lived in abject poverty.

His livid ex-wife left him with seven children. They built a family but were unable to garner enough cash to cater for the wellbeing of their family.

The former wife of the villager walked away from the marriage and her nuclear family to tie the knot with another partner. Apparently, things would change in the life of the man and that of his children.

He met the love of his life afterwards and to make the narrative more fascinating, she is a foreigner.

The Caucasian woman in this heartwarming love story came into the picture when the man was heartbroken.

The couple fell in love instantaneously and decided to take their relationship to another level. This time they decided to build a union outside the rural vicinity. Without considering the impecunious state of the man, the Canadian tourist found love and warmth in his arms.

They then got married to the lady adopting all the kids like hers. The story claimed that they have all moved to Canada with the lady.

Interestingly, the couple is currently trending on social media due to the fairy tale theme involved in the narrative. See more photos from their marriage ceremony below.

Tweenty One persons die as bus plunges down a hillside in South Africa

A Health Official said 21 people died when a bus veered off a gravel road; and plunged down a hillside in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province on Monday.

“I cannot confirm the numbers, as our people are still working,” South Africa’s Regional Health Department spokesman, Sizwe Kupelo, said.

The accident scene is difficult for rescue workers to access as the bus overturned; after plunging 200 metres down the steep slope, he said.

It is thought that there are still people trapped in the vehicle.

The bus, which was picking up passengers in a rural area on their way to the town of Butterworth; was the only vehicle involved in the accident, Kupelo said.

According to the national Road Traffic Management Corporation, which was updating news of the accident on its Twitter channel; the exact cause of the accident had not yet been established.

Road accidents are common in South Africa and many other African nations; due to reckless driving and poor conditions of public transport vehicles and roads.

Super Eagles legend Emmanuel Amunike, steps aside as coach of new club after

Super Eagles legend, Emmanuel Amunike will step down from his role as head coach of Egyptian side Maqassa; who on Sunday appointed Ihab Galal as his successor. Equally important, Amunike was in charge for just one month and supervised only two games.

“The board decided to appoint Amunike as a supervisor of Maqassa’s youth academies. We are launching several academies in Africa and we have just inaugurated our first one in Tanzania;” a statement read on the club’s website on Sunday.

The 49-year-old Amunike was named Maqassa’s boss on Saturday, February 1; taking over on a six-month contract following the sacking of Ahmed “Mido” Hossam.

Amunike, who led Tanzania at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations; took charge of Maqassa for only two matches; with his side playing out two draws with Smouha and El-Entag El-Harby. The former Nigeria striker is an idol figure in Egypt; after hitting stardom with Zamalek in the early years of his career.

Amunike joined the Cairo giants from Nigeria’s Julius Berger in 1991. He went on to win two domestic league titles and one African Champions League crown; in a glorious three-year spell with the club. Also, Amunike played for Portugal’s Sporting, Spanish giants Barcelona and Albacete; before ending his career at Jordanian club Al-Wehdat in 2004.

Maqassa reinstated their former coach Galal in order to rescue their season. The team has dropped to third from bottom after a string of poor results.

The 52-year-old, who left Masry last month after an 18-month spell; enjoyed a career high during his three-year spell at Maqassa from 2014-2017. He helped them secure African Champions League football for the first time in their history; after they finished second in the domestic league in 2017.

Amazon has banned more than one million Fake coronavirus cure

Amazon has banned more than one million products which claim to protect against the coronavirus – or even cure it.

The online retailer told Reuters it had also removed “tens of thousands” of overpriced health products from unscrupulous sellers.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) expressed concern about some misleading Amazon listings earlier this month; including fake treatments.

The virus, also called Covid-19, has killed about 2,800 people worldwide.

The WHO said fake coronavirus claims online is causing mass confusion; and urges tech giants to combat the spread of misinformation.

A search for “coronavirus” on Amazon brought up results for face masks; disinfectant wipes and newly-published books on viral infections; revealing how some sellers are cashing in on the health crisis.

It also offered results for vitamin C boosters – a fake cure for the virus that has been widely disseminated online.

Amazon has not provided a list of those products it says it has removed. But a BBC search for “coronavirus” on the online site; suggests many products are still being sold at unusually high prices.

In one example, a 50-piece stack of surgical masks from one seller cost more than £170; while a popular alternative of the same product is on sale for approximately £36. Even that cheaper product has still risen dramatically in price since early January’ when it cost less than £10.

Some of those products are not even fit for purpose, such as disposable dust or surgical masks, rather than recommended protective equipment.

Local hunters, spiritualists killed 40 bandits in Niger

In efforts to combat the activities of bandits in Niger State, the state government has engaged the services of spiritualists and local hunters; that killed 40 bandits terrorising innocent citizens in the Mashegu Local Government Area of the state.

4wardwego learnt that the first operation the local hunters embarked on; which a 70-year-old female spiritualist in Zuguruma, in the Mashegu LGA led; they killed no fewer than 40 bandits in an encounter which the villagers said lasted for just 30 minutes.

A commander of the bandits and three others who were said to have gone to town to buy recharge cards; and other basic needs for the group were arrested and handed over to the state police command.

One of the villagers simply called Mallam Alhassan, who narrated in Hausa how the operation went, said on approaching the location of the bandits; the woman instructed that the hunters should shoot into the air to draw the bandits out.

“On hearing the gunshots, the bandits were said to have returned fire until they exhaust their bullets;  and the hunters subsequently descended on them and killed 40 of them,” she said.

She said no casualty was recorded on the side of the hunters.

In the meantime, the Second-in-Command to the Police Public Relations Officer, Uthman Umar,  said he was making effort to reach the police division in the area where the incident occurred.

Recently, 1st News reported that the Kaduna State Police Command rescued no fewer than eight passengers; abducted on Wednesday afternoon along Kaduna-Zaria highway.

The police operatives also rescued three workers of Airtel Communications Company kidnapped on Tuesday; and nine others kidnapped on Jan. 14 when bandits attacked the convoy of the Emir of Potiskum.

The police, however, said in the Wednesday’s attack; they shot two of the bandits dead and all the eight abducted passengers rescued.

According to the force’s spokesman, Yakubu Sabo, the victims were travelling to Abuja from Kano; when the bandits forcefully stopped their Sharon vehicle.

According to Sabo, the police responded quickly after receiving information from its DPO in Mararraban Jos; at about 3pm that bandits had blocked the Kaduna-Zaria highway and abducted eight persons.

“On receipt of the information, the Command mobilized teams of operatives with some Armoured Personnel Carrier to the area; engaged the attackers, successfully gunned down two of the bandits and rescued all the eight victims unhurt; while many other bandits escaped with bullet wounds,” he said.
