APC mocks PDP, says opposition rattled by visit of Govs to Jonathan

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is rattled by the recent visit of some of its governors to former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Mr Yekini Nabena, the APC Deputy National Publicity Secretary, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja while reacting to PDP’s criticism of the development.

He, however, advised the PDP to focus on picking itself up instead of dwelling on frivolities.

“The PDP is obviously rattled and disoriented by the recent courtesy visit by some governors of the APC to former President Goodluck Jonathan.

“Chairman, APC Caretaker and Extra-ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) and Gov. of Yobe, Mai Mala Buni led the APC delegation.

“At a time when the PDP and its leadership are grappling with a crisis of confidence, one would expect the failed opposition party to focus on picking itself up,” Nabena said.

He added that as a party for all progressives, the APC on its part will continue to consolidate on its national appeal and acceptance.

4wardwego reports that the PDP had, in an earlier statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, criticised the APC governors for visiting the former president.

According to the PDP, the visit to Jonathan by the APC governors is a direct acceptance of the successes recorded by it in building a strong nation with a virile economy.

The PDP said the visit is also a subtle step by APC governors into an agreement that the PDP has the solution to the country’s challenges.

Meanwhile, former vice-president Atiku Abubakar, on Sunday, November 22, lamented that Nigeria could have averted sliding into a recession had President Muhammadu Buhari listened to his counsel.

4wardwego reported Nigeria officially entered into its worst economic recession in 33 years after the nation recorded a GDP contraction of 3.62 percent in the third quarter of 2020.

However, in his reaction in a social media post, Atiku said the recession could have been avoided if Buhari had cut down on the cost of governance as advised.

He noted that though the COVID-19 pandemic played a negative role in economic development, “we could have avoided this fate by a disciplined and prudent management of our economy”.

#EndSARS: FG accused of allegedly detaining over 1,500 persons, journalists involved in protests

The recriminations from the recent #EndSARS protests which rocked Nigeria in October is yet to be over, as the Federal Government has been accused of clamping down on individuals and groups involved in the protests.

Specifically, over 1,500 persons have allegedly been arrested and detained by the government as a result.

The foregoing was disclosed by the World Socialist Web, a publication of the world Trotskyist movement; the International Committee of the Fourth International, and its affiliated sections in the Socialist Equality Parties around the world.

‘‘Some 1,500 people have been arrested, some in Gestapo-like operations. Detainees include a number of activists and journalists arrested in the capital Abuja who face charges of criminal conspiracy; unlawful assembly, inciting public disturbance and public nuisance. Others have been arrested for managing a WhatsApp platform to coordinate the protests in Osun State; while an artist who had played a prominent role in the protests in Lagos and was planning another protest; was seized at his home and thrown into jail.’’

Further, it alleges that the ongoing clampdown on #EndSARS protesters has seen many flee the country.

‘‘Other high-profile activists have reportedly gone into hiding or left the country. Those targeted include journalists and the broadcast media. Gatefield, a communications firm based in the capital Abuja, had an account dedicated to funding independent journalism frozen. Adewunmi Emoruwa, lead strategist at Gatefield, accused the government of clamping down on the protest movement and instilling fear; saying “The instruments of state are being weaponised in unprecedented ways; especially the [central bank], which should be highly independent and steer clear of political issues such as this.

In addition, it accuses the Nigerian Police of being used to muzzle public gatherings.

‘‘Police are also clamping down on gatherings, banning a symposium on the “lessons and tasks” of the #EndSARS movement that the family of the late internationally renowned Afrobeat musician and activist Fela Kuti had planned to hold at their music venue, the New Afrika Shrine, in Lagos.”

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has recently declared that it may sanction Cable News Network (CNN); which it accused of using unverified and possibly doctored contents in its report on the shooting at the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20.

Drunk police officer allegedly shoots one dead in Ekiti

A drunk police officer has taken the life of one person in Ekiti State.

The incident took place in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State when a gang of drunk police officers shot a yet-to-be-identified man to death on Saturday night.

4WARDWEGO gathered the incident occurred around 9:45 pm at a hotel located along Ado-Ikere road; while the victim was having a good time with his friends.

As a matter of fact, it was learnt that all was well in the hotel until the police officers who had escorted a retired Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG); started misbehaving under the influence of alcohol.

They allegedly threatened to kill some of the guests and opened fire all of a sudden. In the process, the stray bullet hit two persons in the chest.

The development caused pandemonium in the area; forcing guests to scamper for safety while the victims were rushed to Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital; Ado-Ekiti where one was pronounced dead.

It was gathered the second victim was at EKSUTH’s Emergency care unit before being transferred to Afe Babalola University, Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti for intensive care.

Sources said the policemen that fired the shots were the ones that conveyed the two victims in their Hilux vehicle to the hospital but allegedly bolted out of the hospital and abandoned the Hilux, moments after dumping the victims.

When contacted on phone, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Sunday Abutu confirmed the incident; saying the Command had commenced an investigation into the matter.

Abutu said the policemen fingered in the shooting had been arrested and detained at the police headquarters in Ado Ekiti, adding that the officers involved were not from the Ekiti Police Command.

“We have been able to establish that there was a shooting on Saturday night at one hotel in Ado Ekiti.

”Two persons were hit and one had died while the second man is receiving treatment in the hospital.

“The Commissioner of Police had ordered a thorough investigation into the shooting and that we have commenced.

“We are not going to hide anything.

Though those involved are not from our command, the incident is within our jurisdiction…We promise that whoever found culpable will be prosecuted accordingly.”

He said the corpse of the deceased had been deposited in the morgue.

Nigerian Army defends conduct during Lekki shooting, says it couldn’t have acted differently

The Nigerian Army has defended the conduct of its operatives during the Lekki Toll Gate shooting incident.

Equally important, it noted that in hindsight, it will not have taken a different line of action if presented again with a scenario similar to the October 20 shooting incident.

A representative of the Nigerian Army made the assertion on Saturday in Lagos. He was speaking at the Judicial Panel of Inquiry for Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and Other Matters.

Representing the Nigerian Army was Brig.-Gen. Ahmed Taiwo, Commander of the 81 Division, Military Intelligence Brigade, Victoria Island. He made the assertion while being cross-examined by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

“Given the same set of circumstances, the military would have acted in the same way. After every operation we usually do an After Action Review and come up with lessons learnt.

“I have looked at the toll gate issue with the same set of facts. We wouldn’t have acted differently,” he said.

Responding to questions from Mr Bernard Oniga, the lawyer representing the NBA; the witness explained why the army did not take the alternative route which avoided the toll gate if they were clearing up the Eti-Osa corridor, as claimed.

“The discretion was at the hands of the commander. They were attacked by hoodlums and they responded,” he said.

Further, Taiwo denied that the actions of the military at the Lekki Toll Gate triggered the wanton destruction of properties; as well as the loss of lives in Lagos.

“There was wanton loss of life and destruction of properties before the Lekki Toll Gate incident. The loss of lives on October 21 was on the Eti-Osa corridor and the loss of life were cult boys settling scores.

‘‘I saw businesses being torched, some plazas were torched while some were left. I do not know the connection between that and the Lekki Toll Gate plaza.

“If they were reacting to the Nigerian Army, they could have burned down an army barracks,” he said.

Lekki shooting: Judicial Panel representative unaware Army denied being at Toll Gate

Brig.-Gen. Ahmed Taiwo, Commander of the 81 Division, Military Intelligence Brigade, Victoria Island has said that he was unaware that the Nigerian Army Headquarters had denied being at the Lekki Toll Gate on the night of October 20, 2020.

Specifically, he revealed that he was unaware the shooting at the Lekki Toll Gate was labelled fake news on Twitter.

Taiwo made the disclosure on Saturday while being cross-examined at the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry for Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and Other Matters.

Responding to questions from Mr Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN), the counsel for some of the #EndSARS protesters; Taiwo said he was unaware of the denial by the headquarters of the Nigerian Army; attributing this to the fact that he did not own a Twitter account.

“Why did you tell lies, why did the army deny being at the scene?” Olumide-Fusika queried.

Taiwo denied telling lies. Further, he said that the Nigerian Army made the first statements because they did not have the full facts. Also, he stated that the army was not sent to Lekki to break up the protest.

“I have not seen the denial that the Nigerian Army on Twitter called their presence at the toll gate as fake news,” he said.

Following the General’s denial, Olumide-Fusika questioned him further about the Army’s denials.

“There is controversy between you and our Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, when you (Army) denied saying that it was fake news…The governor came out to say he saw some footage.

“Based on the Army’s tweets, Mr Abubakar Malami (SAN), the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF); said the people that went to the toll gate must be hoodlums in army uniforms. Are you aware of the Army HQ handle on Twitter? If you go to your HQ’s verified Twitter account right now, the denial is still there. I challenge you to go online now to see it.

“Are you not aware that information posted on the Nigerian Army Twitter handle on October 21 still exists till this day? Aren’t you an intelligence officer?” the SAN queried.

Responding, Taiwo said Sanwo-Olu had made the assertion about seeing some footage before the army made any verification.

“I’m not aware of what the AGF said. I’m not on twitter. I am speaking here as the most senior Army officer on ground and on behalf of the 81 Division.

“I’m not aware of the Nigerian Army HQ twitter handle. I do not follow it because I’m not on Twitter,” he said.

Meanwhile, 4wardwego  reports that Bashir El-Rufai had recently come under fire from some of his kinsmen for posting pictures of his wife on Twitter.

According to these critics, these pictures of Bashir El-Rufai and his wife are ‘inappropriate’. Equally important, this development comes in the wake of the criticism of the Kannywood actress; Rahama Sadau’s picture who was admonished to remember the culture of the Islamic religion.

However, Bashir El-Rufai, in a tweet, blasted the ‘stupid’ opinions on his pictures and that of his wife.

“If my pictures with my wife does not sit well with some & due to the various unsolicited opinions, I’d just like to use this opportunity to say that they are very stupid & if there’s any other way these pictures can make them feel worse than they already do, please let me know,” he said.

Below are more pictures from the well-attended wedding.
