#EndSARS: FG reveals satisfaction at conduct of Army during protests

The Federal Government on Thursday, November 19, revealed the conduct of policemen and soldiers during the #ENDSARS protests and the attendant violence deserves commendation and not condemnation.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed who stated in Abuja during a televised press conference, stating the government was satisfied with the roles played by the military, police, and other security agencies during the #EndSARS protests.

Mohammed further bemoaned that six soldiers and 37 policemen were killed during the “#EndSARS crisis”, adding that soldiers killed no protester at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos on October 20.

The press conference comes in the aftermath of an investigative report by CNN that some #EndSARS protesters were killed and injured.

Mohammed, who insisted that the soldiers deployed to Lekki were professionals, said the reports indicating that protesters were killed relied on unverified facts from social media.

He also described the reports as demoralising, stating that protesters were killed without stating attacks on security operatives and infrastructure by hoodlums.

He said: “We insist that the military did not shoot at the protesters at Lekki. They fired blank ammunition into the air. Anyone who knows anyone who was killed at Lekki toll gate should go straight to the judicial panel with evidence.

“At this point, it is important to say that the Federal Government is very satisfied with roles played by the security agencies, especially the military, and the police all through the EndSARS crisis. They were professional.

“Even when their lives were at stake, they exercised uncommon restraints. Their professionalism saved many lives and properties.”

Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has implored the Federal Government to show its commitment to revitalisation of public universities in the country.

This appeal was made on Wednesday, November 18, in a statement signed and also made available to newsmen by the Lagos Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Prof. Olusoji Sowande.

Sowande revealed why ASUU shifted ground; from its initial demands in the interests of Nigerian students who have spent over seven months at home.

According to Prof. Sowande; equally important, ASUU has dumped its initial insistence that the government should release one tranche of N220 billion revitalization fund; and is now demanding for 50% of one tranche (N110 billion).

“In the interest of our students who have been at home for seven months; our union has shifted ground from the in the insistence of a release of one tranche of N220 billion revitalization fund to demand 50% of one tranche (N110 billion) for government to show its commitment to revitalisation of our universities.

“This is a major reason the government has not been able to return to negotiation with our union in the last two weeks,” the statement reads in part.

Lagos govt vows to deal with errant “Okada” riders, motorists

The Lagos State Government says the game is over for traffic offenders, especially with the menace and impunity of commercial motorcycle operators in the state.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Frederic Oladeinde, made the remark, on Thursday, November 19, at a news conference in Ikeja on traffic rules violation.

Oladeinde expressed the government’s displeasure at flagrant violation of the Transport Sector Reform Law (TSRL) 2018, which restricts the operations of commercial motorcycle riders, popularly known Okada riders, and driving against traffic.

He said that Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu had demonstrated his commitment to making roads smooth, to promote better traffic flow.

The commissioner said that the governor had also invested in water and land transportation through the provision of ferries and high capacity buses.

“In spite of all the efforts of Mr Governor to reform our transport sector, it is therefore disheartening to note a lot of our people are still going against the extant law of the state on transport operation and safe driving on our roads and in our communities.

“The Lagos State Government prioritises the safety and security of the people. As a government, we cannot continue to watch this lawlessness develop into an uncontrollable situation.

“I say the game is over because, in the last few months, we have witnessed a lot of security and safety challenges, apparently as a result of the activities of unscrupulous Okada riders.

“These operators do not only violate the provisions of the Transport Sector Reform Law of Lagos State, 2018 with respect to restriction of areas of operations but perpetrate crime using their motorcycles,” he said.

According to him, the restriction of Okada on certain routes in the state is still in force and failure to comply with the law will attract sanctions as stipulated in the TSRL 2018, with penalties ranging from N20, 000 to three months imprisonment.

He said that any motorist caught driving against traffic would pay the maximum penalty, which is to have their vehicles impounded and forfeited in line with TSRL 2018, while the drivers would be equally charged to the court of law.

“In line with this administration’s plan to build Lagos that works for all, we are determined to continue to engage with the various transport unions and associations of tricycle and Okada operators, to ensure their members cooperate with us in the process of ensuring public safety by abiding with the TSRL 2018 at all times.

“With the upsurge in the number of commercial motorcycle operators, we shall intensify our enforcement strategy. This we intend to carry out along with the various transport union leaders.

“We will set up a joint enforcement team to ensure that our roads are sanitised from the menace of Okada riders.

“We hereby direct all Law Enforcement Agencies; Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), Task Force, and the Nigeria Police to immediately and continuously embark on enforcement on all restricted routes,” Oladeinde said.

Saraki: Former Senate President bemoans insecurity, speaks on kidnapping of police officials in Katsina

Bukola Saraki, former President of the Senate, on Thursday, November 19, lamented the current spate of kidnappings and banditry in the country while making recommendations to President Muhammadu Buhari on how to tackle the issue of insecurity ravaging the nation.

Saraki made this call in response to the kidnapping of 12 police officers by suspected bandits along the Katsina-Zamfara expressway.

He called on the president to tap into Nigeria’s brightest and most experienced minds in order to curb the rising cases of insecurity, especially in the area of banditry and kidnappings.

The officers, who are assistant superintendents of police, were kidnapped ten days ago, according to a BBC report.

In a series of tweets via his verified Twitter handle, @bukolasaraki; Saraki urged Buhari to engage former presidents, retired officers in curbing the issue of kidnapping in the country.

He urged the president to urgently call for help for the menace of kidnapping in Nigeria.

“The kidnapping issue is not a problem for President Buhari alone. It is a problem confronting and threatening all Nigerians.

“I am convinced that this is a problem for all of us, and as such, I advise Mr. President to urgently call for help from all and sundry. All hands must be on deck. If we don’t address the problem of kidnapping urgently it will engulf the entire nation.

“In this country, we have brilliant, serving, and retired intelligence officers. We have experienced serving and retired military and other security officers who have had some of the best training available in the world in dealing with this type of problem.

“From my own perspective, wherever the idea is coming from – be it from a retired security officer, an opposition leader, or even a foreign country – what is important at this juncture is to put an end to this national menace.

“I am sure that if all these people are ‘locked’ up in one room together and with the abundant talents and resources that will be available to tap into, they will most certainly produce a workable, action plan that can immediately be implemented to solve the kidnapping problem.

“This national emergency is threatening the very existence of our country. We cannot leave it to the government alone as if it is solely Buhari’s problem. It is not. We have left it for too long.

“This is a problem that was initially limited to one part of the country. However, it has long since spread across the country.

“The problem of kidnapping is not only threatening the peace of the country. It is creating food insecurity and constraining people’s means of livelihood, particularly in the rural areas where 70 percent of the food produced in this country comes from.

“As somebody once said, it is not just enough to pray for victims. No, we must find a permanent solution that will prevent any reoccurrences,” Saraki explained.

Zainab Ahmed: Finance Minister announces approval of Finance Bill 2020 to support 2021 Budget

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, revealed the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the Finance Bill 2020 meant to support the smooth implementation of the 2021 budget.

4wardwego gathered the FEC approved the bill at its 24th virtual meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Wednesday, November 18.

Zainab Ahmed told journalists at the end of the meeting that would also engender incremental changes in the nation’s tax laws.

According to the minister, the Finance Bill will be transmitted to the National Assembly for its consideration; and passage into law.

“Through this finance bill, what we are seeking to do is to make incremental changes; to tax laws relating to Customs and Excise; as well as other fiscal laws to support the implementation of the annual budget.

“When Mr. President presented the 2021 budget to the parliament he did direct that the 2020 Finance Bill will also follow to support the budget proposals.

“We are working on implementing current fiscal reforms in line with the Multi-Year Medium Term framework; and over time we hope that with this Finance Bill, that the fiscal space will be reformed on an incremental basis.

“So this Finance Bill for 2020 was developed as a result of a very large multi-stakeholder effort; under Fiscal Policy Reform Committee that has several ministries, departments and agencies as members; but also the private sector, experienced tax practitioners and academics.

“During the process, we received a lot of suggestions from different stakeholders; but we had to limit what we could take; because, we are by three principles – to adopt appropriate counter fiscal measures to manage the economic slowdown; incrementally reforming the fiscal incentive policies of the government; and ensuring closer coordination between the monetary trade as well as fiscal authorities,’’ she said.

According to Zainab Ahmed, her ministry is working on how to provide adequate macroeconomic strategies to attract investment; to be able to grow the economy on a sustainable basis.

She stated that some highlights of these provisions include: “amendments that we have had to make provide incremental changes to tax laws.”

Umahi: Ebonyi Gov reveals injustice in PDP led to APC defection

Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi has said he wants to be a martyr who will be sacrificed to achieve the much-sought Igbo presidency.

Umahi made the declaration on Tuesday, November 17, in Abakaliki while briefing newsmen, noting that only martyrs make sacrifices for the peoples’ interest in difficult times.

The governor, who confirmed that he is defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress (APC), said he will not regret the decision no matter its outcome.

“I have to lead the protest against the marginalisation of the Igbos by the PDP; and I don’t have to consult anybody to lead such a protest.

“I don’t want the PDP to collapse in the southeast; but it can collapse itself in the zone; if it does not heed the peoples’ advice to entrench justice, fairness, and equity.

“The PDP should be bold to declare its stand on the zoning of the presidency to the southeast; and if it cannot, should tell us why we are not capable of holding such a position; but will come for our votes during elections,” he said.

Umahi said that the decision to leave PDP was not about leadership; but about patriotism, justice, fairness, and the overall interest of the people.

“I am not vying for any position in the APC; so anybody who does not like me over the defection will be fighting the air.

“I will instead play the fatherly role of guiding anyone who wants to vie for any position because it is a waste of time for any governor to seek to replace himself.

“When you are looking for everybody to be loyal to you in politics, you might not get to your destination; because destinations are not straight but full of obstacles,” he said.

Umahi said that he will not be disturbed if the APC fails to zone the presidency to the southeast but will depend on God to determine the matter.

“The APC, however, appears to be amenable towards working with the southeast; even though the southeast never supported it the way it supported the PDP since 1999.

“We would be 24 years with the PDP by 2023; and Ebonyi, under my administration, will testify the numerous feats we have attained with the support of my friend and father, President Muhammadu Buhari,” he said.

He said that his defection has created a political gathering and mass movement; unprecedented in Ebonyi history with both PDP and APC faithful coming together to pursue a common cause.

Imo lawmaker detailed, denied bail over alleged assault on Deputy Speaker

A magistrate’s Court 1 sitting in Owerri, on Monday, November 16, declined the bail application for an Imo State lawmaker, Hercules Okoro.

4wardwego gathered Okoro was arrested, detained, and arraigned for alleged assault on Deputy Speaker of the House, Amara Iwuanyanwu.

Okoro, who represents the Ohaji-Egbema constituency in the legislature, was charged also along with four others, Sunday Ambition, Cosmos Opara, Hillary Kingsley, and Azim Reginald, on an eight-count charge bordering on assault and breach of public peace.

According to the prosecuting counsel, T. O. B. Okey, “the charges are punishable under the relevant criminal laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria applicable in Imo State.”

This comes in the wake of the bail application tendered by defence lawyer, Calistus Osundu.

Osundu argued that “the high rate of violence in the state should be tamed irrespective of how highly placed the affected individual.”

The prosecution also accused Okoro of conspiring with the quartet to “attack, assault and also cause serious injuries on number four citizen of the state, who represents Nwangele in the Assembly.”

Okey claimed that the defendants hit his client with a machete and likewise injured him in the shoulder.

But the defence counsel, Osundu, maintained that the charges were bailable.

Following the ensuing argument, the presiding magistrate, Okoroji O. D., ruled that the parties should address the court in writing.

She thereafter adjourned the matter to Wednesday, November 18, 2020, for ruling on the bail application; while ordering that the accused be reminded at the correctional facility in Owerri.

The legislature had on Friday impeached Dr. Chiji Collins as a speaker and replaced him with Mr. Paul Emeziem.

The detained lawmaker, during the courtesy visit by the new team to Governor Hope Uzodimma at Government House; allegedly had altercations with the deputy speaker, leading to fisticuffs.
