Squid Game now worth almost $1billion for Netflix

Netflix’s biggest series, Squid Game is estimated to be worth almost $US900 million ($A1.2 billion) for the streaming giant, Bloomberg News reports; citing figures from an internal Netflix document.

The nine-episode thriller, in which contestants play childhood games; with deadly consequences in a bid to win 45.6 billion won ($A52 million), became an international hit; when it launched last month.

In comparison to its estimated net worth, the show cost just $US21.4 million ($A28.8 million) to produce, Bloomberg said.

According to the report, about 132 million people have watched at least two minutes of the show in its first 23 days; easily breaking the record set by US drama Bridgerton; which was streamed by 82 million accounts in its first 28 days.

Netflix had earlier announced the show had amassed 111 million fans; but Bloomberg said those figures were based on slightly older data.

California-based Netflix estimated 89 per cent of people who started the show watched more than one episode, the news agency said; and 66 per cent finished watching the series in the first 23 days.

Anambra Elections: INEC restates pledge to ensure transparent

INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has stated that the Nov. 6 Anambra governorship election will be embarrassingly transparent as it has put facilities in place to achieve an all inclusive electoral process.

The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Anambra state, Dr Nwachukwu Orji, made the assertion in Awka, on Saturday, October 15, during a voter education and sensitisation forum for Persons with disabilities (PWDs) and Women groups.

The programme was organised in collaboration with the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Consortium for Elections and Political Process Strengthening.

Orji who was represented by INEC Head of Voter Education and Publicity, Mr Samuel Nimem, said that the commission had successfully carried out most of the activities on schedule for the election.

According to him, this election will debunk all the ideas and beliefs that INEC rigs election or commits electoral fraud.

“INEC is ready on every stage for the election. The electoral materials that got burnt recently in an attack have been replaced, non-sensitive materials have been distributed to all local government areas and training of officials and ad-hoc staff is ongoing as I speak to you.

“We have pasted and presented voters’ register to the political parties fielding candidates, we have published the final list of candidates and we have been engaging stakeholders to ensure security at polling units.

“We have increased polling units to 5,720 to increase access to all voters and we are carrying out aggressive voter education and sensitisation appealing to residents to exercise their civic responsibilities.

“With all facilities in place and with the electronic transmission of results, I tell you that Anambra election will be embarrassingly transparent. This will build confidence in our electoral system,” he said.

Orji urged PWDs to actively participate in all aspects of the electoral process as the commission had made adequate provisions in terms of voting aids.

“PWDs are very important citizens, so we give them special attention by creating an inclusive environment.

“You need to participate fully in the electoral process because you are all citizens of Nigeria and have the right to vote and be voted for. I assure you that we are doing all we can to ensure your safety,” he said.

COVID-19 vaccine is from the pit of Hell – Enenche

The Senior Pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre, Dr. Paul Enenche, has stated that the compulsory vaccination mandate is from the pit of hell.

Enenche made this statement on Friday, October 15; while speaking to his congregation during a programme tagged ‘Early will I seek thee’; which was aired on the official YouTube channel of the church.

“In case you don’t know, compulsory vaccination is from the pit of hell. Nobody is ever permitted to be given an injection by force; for any reason. It’s from the pit of hell. That is what we’re praying about,” Enenche said.

He added, “Anybody who is sick has the right to be treated. And anybody – by choice – can receive medication anytime. Even God Almighty gave man a choice in the Garden of Eden. He gave man a choice. Only the devil leaves people with no choice.”

The cleric then led the congregation in prayer saying, “Father, we ask that you terminate the bondwoman agenda over our nation; and the antichrist agenda over the globe. Show the world that the Most High rules over the affairs of men; by collapsing the evil devices of the enemy around the world.”

This comes two days after the Federal Government mandated coronavirus vaccination for civil servants.

The Chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, announced the new directive at a briefing on Wednesday.

He also explained that civil servants would not be allowed to enter offices starting from December 1 without vaccination proof.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige has stated that it will commence the disbursement of the N30 billion revitalisation fund to public universities soon.

Ngige said this at the end of a closed door conciliation meeting between the Federal Government; as well as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Friday, October 15, in Abuja.

The meeting was convened by the minister to evaluate the level of implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by both parties in December 2020 and the resolutions of the follow-up meeting, held on Aug., 2.

Ngige said that the meeting held fruitful deliberations; as well as the six issues on the agenda were satisfactorily addressed.

He assured that government was not dragging its feet on anything that would make the university system to be good; also adding that it was desirous that public universities should be seen as fit and proper places for learning and research.

The minister reaffirmed the commitment of the government to uplifting the standard of the country’s university system.
