President Joe Biden Withdraws From US Presidential Election Race

President Joe Biden stunned the nation today with his announcement that he will suspend his campaign for re-election in 2024. The decision, revealed on Sunday, comes in response to intensifying pressure from Democratic colleagues, prominent donors, and influential figures in Hollywood following a disappointing debate performance against Republican rival Donald Trump.

Biden’s withdrawal from the race, just four months before Americans head to the polls, has dramatically reshaped the trajectory of the upcoming presidential election. The move follows weeks of mounting calls from within his own party for the 81-year-old President to step aside amidst concerns about his ability to effectively compete against Trump in November.

In a heartfelt letter shared on his social media platforms, Joe Biden expressed his deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve as President, calling it the greatest honor of his life. He acknowledged that while he had originally intended to seek re-election, he believes stepping down is in the best interest of the Democratic Party and the nation. Biden reassured the public of his commitment to focusing solely on his presidential duties for the remainder of his term.

The announcement comes shortly after Biden’s disclosure of a COVID-19 diagnosis, which fueled doubts about his campaign’s momentum. Despite efforts to allay concerns through television interviews and campaign appearances, Biden’s decision underscores the challenges he faced within his own party and broader political landscape.

As speculation now turns to who will lead the Democratic charge in the upcoming election, Biden’s unexpected departure marks a pivotal moment in the race for the White House.

FG, Labour Reach Agreement on ₦70,000 Minimum Wage

In a landmark decision, the Federal Government and the leadership of the Organised Labour have agreed to a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 for Nigerian workers, according to the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris.

The agreement was finalized during a meeting in Abuja on Thursday between President Bola Tinubu and the leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

Minister Idris, addressing State House correspondents, expressed satisfaction with the outcome. “We are happy to announce today that both the Organised Labour and the Federal Government have agreed on an increase from the previous ₦62,000 minimum wage. The new national minimum that Mr. President is expected to submit to the National Assembly is ₦70,000,” Idris stated.

Flanking the minister during the announcement were NLC President Joe Ajaero, TUC President Festus Osifo, Labour Minister Nkiruka Onyejeocha, and other key officials.

Wage Reviews to Occur Every Three Years

NLC President Ajaero confirmed the new ₦70,000 benchmark and emphasized that future reviews of the minimum wage would occur every three years instead of the previous five-year interval. He noted that Organised Labour would consult with their members regarding the new wage figure.

“We were here last week, and we are here now. What they have announced, in terms of ₦70,000, is where we currently stand. However, we will not wait another five years for another agreement,” Ajaero remarked.

Labour Minister Onyejeocha added that President Tinubu had instructed the Ministers of Finance and Budget, Wale Edun and Atiku Bagudu, to develop strategies to address the issues concerning the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU).

This agreement follows a series of intensive discussions between labour leaders and the President, which came after several months of failed negotiations involving a tripartite committee on minimum wage, formed by the President in January. The committee, including representatives from state and federal governments as well as the Organised Private Sector, initially proposed ₦62,000, while labour demanded ₦250,000 to replace the current ₦30,000 minimum wage.

Labour leaders had argued that ₦30,000 was insufficient given the high inflation and cost of living exacerbated by the removal of petrol subsidies.

During a meeting last Thursday, President Tinubu urged labour leaders to maintain realistic expectations regarding the minimum wage, stating, “You have to cut your coat according to available cloth. Before finalizing the minimum wage process, we must consider the structure.”

In his Democracy Day speech on June 12, 2024, President Tinubu announced plans to send an executive bill on the new national minimum wage to the National Assembly for passage. Minister Idris confirmed that the ₦70,000 agreed amount would be communicated to the National Assembly in the coming days.

Senate Appoints Senator Lalong as Chairman of Agricultural Institutions Committee

In a strategic move aimed at bolstering Nigeria’s agricultural sector, Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the appointment of Senator Simon Bako Lalong as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agricultural Institutions. Representing Plateau South Senatorial District, the former Plateau State Governor brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record to the 10th Senate.

Senator Lalong’s appointment is particularly significant as Nigeria intensifies efforts towards achieving food sufficiency and security. A passionate advocate for agriculture and a practicing farmer, Lalong has consistently demonstrated his commitment to advancing the sector. During his tenure as Speaker of the Plateau House of Assembly and as a two-term Governor, he spearheaded numerous initiatives to support farmers, including the procurement and distribution of fertilizers, chemicals, seedlings, and farming machinery.

Lalong’s impact on agricultural education is noteworthy. He revived the Plateau State College of Agriculture in Garkawa, leading to its first convocation in over a decade, and established the Faculty of Agriculture at Plateau State University, Bokkos. Additionally, he facilitated the take-off of the Federal Polytechnic Nyak, Shendam, with a focus on agricultural development and research.

His efforts in crop production were marked by collaborations with the Federal Government to promote wheat production in Plateau State and with the African Development Bank to boost potato and vegetable farming. Furthermore, Lalong played a crucial role in addressing farmer-herder conflicts, establishing ranches under the National Livestock Transformation Programme, and enacting the anti-land Grabbing Bill to protect agricultural lands.

Senator Lalong’s appointment has been widely welcomed as a strategic decision that promises to enhance the effectiveness of the 10th Senate in leaving a lasting impact on Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
