DNA Test Confirms Grandfather as Father of Granddaughter’s Child

A 65-year- old grandfather identified as Musa Gado has been arrested for allegedly impregnating his 16-year-old granddaughter (name withheld) in Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State.

The Niger State Child Right’s Agency revealed this to journalists at a press briefing addressed by its Director General Hajiya Kaltume Mohammed on Wednesday.

According to Kaltume, a Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid (DNA) Test confirmed that Gado, the maternal grandfather of the victim from Mashegu LGA of the state, is the biological father of the four-month-old baby delivered by his granddaughter.

She also said Gado had made several fruitless attempts to abort the pregnancy.

Kaltume revealed that the victim’s father, Mr Lawal Nababa, registered a complaint in 2025 for alleged repeated sexual assaults on his daughter by her maternal grandfather.

The director general said at the time the matter was reported at the agency, the victim was six months pregnant and was kept in the agency’s custody until she delivered a baby boy in December 2025.

She said the teenager, whose parents are still alive, was reportedly taken by her maternal grandmother since childhood.

Mohammed however, said the suspect had denied responsibility of the act, thus forcing the agency to order for the DNA test that was conducted in a laboratory outside Nigeria at the cost of N500,000.African economy outlook

“When the girl was brought to the agency, she was actually six months pregnant. We had to do some medical checkups, and she was kept under the custody of the agency from that time and now.

“She gave birth in December, and we agreed that the only way we could get to the root of the matter and establish the fact was to go for the DNA test, which was agreed by both parties.

“After she gave birth, we waited for her to be strong before we went for the paternity test and within five weeks the result came out and it was announced that the grandfather was the father of the baby because the result was 99.9999 per cent positive,” she said.

The director general revealed that the suspect, currently in Police custody, would be charged to court after police had completed its investigation.

Mohammed also disclosed that the agency was currently handling six similar cases, including that of a father who had been having carnal knowledge of his biological daughter.

“Child molestation and rape is alarming in the state.

“I assumed office as the DG Niger State Child Rights Agency in November 2025, and honestly, we have had a lot of issues of rape where children were molested by their parents, neighbours and some people within the community.

“Right now, we have six cases we are prosecuting and the most important one we are handling right now is that of the 16-year-old girl who was impregnated by her grandfather.

“This case was reported to the agency by the father of the girl on 5th October 2025,” she said.

Kanam Youths Endorse Tinubu, Mutfwang for 2027, Demand Senate Seat for Ephraim Usman

The Coalition of Kanam Ethnic Youths Nationalities has thrown its full weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Plateau State Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang for re-election in 2027.

The group made the strong declaration during a well-attended endorsement gathering held at the Multi-purpose Conference Centre in Dengi, headquarters of Kanam Local Government Area.

Speaking on behalf of the coalition, leaders Mr. Sadiq Kwaltommai and Mr. Mustapha Bayuma emphasized that after wide consultations across all 20 wards of Kanam LGA, the youths resolved to endorse both leaders for a second term.

On President Tinubu, the coalition stated:

“After careful review of national leadership since May 29, 2023, we declare our total support and endorsement of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for a second term in 2027. Our endorsement is based on the Renewed Hope Agenda, which is steadily stabilizing the economy, confronting insecurity, and delivering critical infrastructure nationwide. We commend the President’s bold decisions, increased allocations to states, and commitment to legacy projects that will transform Northern Nigeria.”

On Governor Mutfwang, the youths highlighted tangible achievements in Kanam LGA, describing the endorsement as “earned, not given.”

They listed key interventions include the commencement of rehabilitation works on the Amper–Dengi road, Gishare–Gwamlar–Gidgid roads, and several feeder roads. Others include the renovation of Government Secondary School Dengi and provision of desks and learning materials to basic schools, Upgrade of General Hospital Dengi with new beds, laboratory equipment, and additional medical staff, Quarterly supply of drugs to Primary Healthcare Centres, Timely distribution of fertilizers and improved seeds to genuine farmers in 2024 and 2025 farming seasons and Regular payment of salaries to local government staff and entitlements to traditional rulers among others.

The coalition stressed that these developments have brought visible relief to the people, especially in roads, education, healthcare, and agriculture.

On the Senate seat, the group made a passionate appeal to Governor Mutfwang for equity:

“Kanam Local Government Area remains the only LGA in Plateau Central Senatorial District that has not produced a Senator since the return of democracy in 1999. With over 132,000 registered voters, placing us second in the zone, we insist that 2027 must be the turn of Kanam.

“We therefore endorse Hon. Chief Ephraim Usman as our candidate for the Plateau Central Senatorial seat. Equity and fairness demand that power rotates to give every part of the zone a sense of belonging.”

The youths noted that they have consistently supported candidates from other LGAs (Mangu, Bokkos, Pankshin, and Kanke) in the past and celebrated their victories, but it is now time for justice and rotational equity.

Ealier in his remark, the Leader of the Kanam Legistlative Arm, Hon Duba-Allahyafi Samson also added to the voices calling for equity. He noted that as a Jhar Son, he haa witness the successive election of a Jhar son two terms into the House of Representatives, stressing that other LGAs should be considered for that office while Kanam should be considered for the Senatorial slot in the interest of equity.

The group concluded by the briefing by congratulating Professor Nentawe Yiltwada on his emergence as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a proud moment for Plateau State and Nigerian democracy.

INEC Postpones Nationwide Voter Revalidation Exercise Until After 2027 Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of the planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 General Election.

The decision was reached during a meeting between the Commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) held on Friday, April 10, 2026, where key electoral matters were reviewed.

According to INEC, the voter revalidation exercise remains a vital aspect of its constitutional mandate to maintain a credible and up-to-date National Register of Voters. The process is designed to verify and update existing voter records, ensure the accuracy of personal data, and eliminate duplicate or ineligible entries from the register.

The Commission explained that the exercise would also provide an opportunity for registered voters across the country to confirm their details and make necessary corrections where required, thereby strengthening the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.

Despite the postponement, INEC reaffirmed its commitment to delivering free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections, assuring Nigerians that all necessary steps would continue to be taken to safeguard the electoral process ahead of the 2027 polls.

The statement was signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.

17 Firms Compete as Plateau Hospital Begins Transparent Procurement Process

The Plateau State Specialist Hospital has commenced the opening of bids for the procurement of critical medical and office equipment, as part of efforts to upgrade healthcare services in the state.

A total of 17 companies submitted tender bids, which were officially opened on Tuesday at the hospital’s boardroom, following an earlier public invitation to reputable and registered contractors.

The procurement exercise covers multiple categories of equipment, including dental, physiotherapy, orthopedic instruments and implants, theatre and surgical equipment, ophthalmology tools, hearing test devices for both adults and children, urological equipment, as well as office equipment. The items are grouped into various lots to allow contractors bid based on their areas of specialization.

Speaking during the bid opening, the Chief Medical Director, Christopher Yilgwan, emphasized the commitment of the Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang administration to transparency and accountability in governance.

He noted that the open bidding process reflects the government’s “open door and open book policy,” aimed at building public trust and ensuring that citizens are actively engaged in governance processes.

According to him, “When people scrutinize what we do, it keeps us on our toes and helps us to deliver better outcomes. This process is designed to ensure that the people of Plateau State get the best in terms of healthcare services and equipment.”

Yilgwan dismissed concerns that the process might be a mere formality, assuring stakeholders that all submissions would undergo a rigorous technical evaluation by qualified professionals, including end-users of the equipment.

He added that the hospital places a high premium on adherence to global standards, noting that outdated equipment—some of which have been in use for decades—necessitated the current procurement drive.

Following the bid opening, the next phase will involve a detailed technical evaluation of all submissions by a specialized committee, after which recommendations will be made for contract awards.

Also speaking, the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics and Chairman of the Bid Opening Committee, Jonathan Bulus, highlighted that the transparent process was designed to promote fairness, accountability, and healthy competition among bidders.

Observers at the event commended the openness of the exercise. Chairman of the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations on Health in Plateau State, Christopher Damcher, described the process as encouraging and capable of preventing disputes if sustained through subsequent stages.

A representative of one of the bidding firms, Gondys Simon, also expressed confidence in the process, noting that transparency would ensure that only competent contractors are selected and that the hospital ultimately benefits from quality supplies.

The procurement process is expected to proceed with pre-qualification and further evaluations, as part of broader efforts by the Plateau State Government to strengthen the healthcare sector and improve service delivery across the state.
