The attack reportedly occurred in the early hours of Friday, leaving many residents injured and forcing others to flee for safety.

Residents said the assailants invaded the community at about 2:00 a.m., shooting indiscriminately before attacking victims with machetes and other dangerous weapons.

Plateau Media Professionals Explore AI, Fact-Checking and Peacebuilding at GIZ Workshop

Journalists and media professionals from across Plateau State have concluded a three-day intensive Media for Peace workshop organized under the Peacecore Project implemented by GIZ Nigeria at Crispan Suites and Hotel, Jos.

The workshop, which marked the Second Cohort of the Media for Peace training, focused on conflict-sensitive reporting, communication development and peacebuilding, artificial intelligence, and the use of fact-checking tools in journalism practice.

Speaking during the training, Susan Gopuk of GIZ Nigeria highlighted the organization’s long-standing commitment to peacebuilding, conflict transformation, and livelihoods support in Nigeria. She explained that GIZ, a German agency for international cooperation funded mainly by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, operates in over 120 countries and has maintained a presence in Nigeria for 51 years with more than 30 projects nationwide.

According to her, the Peacecore Project currently operates in Kaduna, Plateau, and Taraba states in collaboration with governments, civil society organizations, media practitioners, and international partners. She noted that while the project’s first phase focused on strengthening peacebuilding and conflict resolution between farmers and herders, the second phase now emphasizes conflict transformation and sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable groups including women, youth, children, internally displaced persons, farmers, herders, and persons living with disabilities.

Susan stressed that gender equality remains central to the project, with deliberate efforts aimed at improving women’s access to rights, representation, and resources. She also highlighted interventions in dialogue, mental health support, youth engagement, climate-smart livelihoods, and infrastructure development.

She further emphasized the role of the media in promoting peace and countering hate speech, misinformation, and divisive narratives, especially in fragile communities like Plateau State.

One of the resource persons, Lady Irene David-Irene, delivered a presentation on Communication Development and Peace Building, where she underscored the influence journalists and media professionals wield in shaping public perception and social cohesion.

She warned that every action or inaction by journalists carries consequences, particularly in conflict-prone societies where reports can either promote peace or escalate tensions. She identified misinformation, sensationalism, hate speech, and biased reporting as key issues threatening peace and stability.

Lady Irene urged participants to embrace ethical, balanced, and conflict-sensitive journalism capable of fostering dialogue, unity, and mutual understanding within communities.

Thaddeus Yilmen said the sessions refreshed journalists on the ethics, responsibilities, and expectations of the profession, particularly the “do’s and don’ts” of responsible reporting. He called for more regular trainings to enable more media practitioners to benefit and contribute to peace-focused journalism.

Similarly, Tongnaan Bawa appreciated the organizers and facilitators for what she described as a valuable and enlightening experience. She assured that participants would apply the knowledge gained and continue promoting responsible journalism and peaceful narratives in their respective platforms.

The workshop forms part of ongoing efforts by GIZ through the Peacecore Project to strengthen peace-focused communication, counter misinformation, and build the capacity of journalists and young people as advocates for peaceful coexistence and conflict prevention in Nigeria.

INEC to Resume Final Phase of Nationwide Voter Registration May 11

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the resumption of the third and final phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, set to commence on Monday, May 11, 2026.

In a press statement issued on May 5, the Commission disclosed that the exercise, which was earlier paused on April 17, 2026, will run until July 10, 2026. The suspension, INEC explained, was to allow for the clean-up of the voter register following its publication for claims and objections.

According to INEC, the final phase provides another opportunity for eligible Nigerians, particularly those who have recently turned 18 or missed earlier registration windows, to enroll and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

The Commission also urged already registered voters seeking to transfer their registration, replace lost or damaged PVCs, or update their personal information to take advantage of the exercise. Such services can be accessed through INEC’s online portal or at its offices across states and local government areas nationwide.

INEC further revealed that the updated Register of Voters will be displayed for public scrutiny between July 23 and July 29, 2026, allowing citizens to file claims and objections to ensure the integrity of the register.

Reassuring the public of its preparedness, the Commission stated that all necessary arrangements have been put in place for a smooth exercise, while calling on eligible citizens to participate actively in strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process.

The statement was signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.

NNPC Partners Chinese Firms to Revive Port Harcourt, Warri Refineries

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with two Chinese companies in a fresh push to rehabilitate and expand the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, both of which have been inactive for several months.

The agreement, sealed on April 30, 2026, in Jiaxing City, China, was executed by NNPC’s Group Chief Executive Officer, , alongside senior officials of the partner firms. The deal marks a renewed effort to restore Nigeria’s domestic refining capacity and reduce reliance on imported petroleum products.

NNPC said the partnership will tackle longstanding technical and operational issues that have limited the efficiency of the refineries. The scope of work includes completing pending rehabilitation projects, as well as overseeing the operation and long-term maintenance of the facilities to ensure sustainable performance.

In addition to restoring production, the agreement outlines plans to upgrade infrastructure, improve product quality, increase output, and enhance profitability. It also extends to expanding petrochemical capabilities and unlocking opportunities within Nigeria’s gas and downstream sectors.

The national oil company noted that the collaboration could pave the way for the development of integrated industrial hubs around the refineries, where petrochemical and gas-based industries can operate in synergy—transforming the facilities into broader engines of industrial growth.

Ojulari described the MoU as a significant milestone following months of negotiations, emphasizing the importance of engaging technically competent and financially capable partners to prevent a recurrence of past inefficiencies.

The deal comes after prolonged shutdowns of Nigeria’s state-owned refineries, which were taken offline on May 24, 2025, for maintenance initially expected to last only weeks. However, deeper structural and financial challenges later discovered extended the downtime.

By February 2026, NNPC disclosed that the refineries had been operating at substantial losses prior to their closure, raising concerns about their long-term viability without major reforms.

Despite setbacks, including a previously reported $1.5 billion rehabilitation effort on the Port Harcourt refinery that failed to achieve sustained output, NNPC has maintained that it will not sell the facility, opting instead for rehabilitation through strategic partnerships.

While the success of the new agreement remains to be seen, it signals a more structured and determined approach to addressing Nigeria’s refining challenges. It also aligns with NNPC’s improved financial position, having reported a profit after tax of N276 billion for March 2026.

The initiative represents a cautious but critical step toward boosting local refining capacity, strengthening energy security, and easing the economic burden of fuel imports.

NDC, APM in Fresh Turmoil as Legal Adviser Faces Possible Jail Over Alleged Dual Party Membership

The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) and Allied Peoples Movement (APM) are grappling with a potential internal crisis following allegations that their National Legal Adviser, Reuben Egwuaba, holds membership in both opposition parties simultaneously.

Documents obtained over the weekend indicate that Egwuaba is listed in the same position in both parties’ records submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), raising concerns about a possible breach of Nigeria’s electoral laws.

Verification on INEC’s official platform reportedly confirms his dual listing, a development that electoral reform advocates say contradicts provisions of the amended Electoral Act, which prohibits membership in more than one political party at a time.

Reacting to the situation, activist Julius Aondowase described the issue as more than an administrative error, warning of serious legal consequences.
He stressed that under the revised law, particularly Section 77, dual party membership is expressly forbidden, carrying penalties of up to ₦10 million in fines or a prison term of up to two years.

Aondowase further noted that the role of National Legal Adviser is a key position within a party’s National Executive Committee, requiring full and exclusive allegiance, making the alleged dual role both politically inappropriate and potentially criminal.

He called for an immediate investigation by relevant authorities, urging transparency and accountability. According to him, if the records are accurate, they represent a clear legal violation; if not, the public deserves a prompt explanation for the discrepancy.

The controversy comes amid recent political shifts, including the defection of former governors Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso to the NDC, further intensifying attention on the party’s internal affairs.

Peter Obi Resigns from ADC, Cites Internal Crisis and Toxic Political Climate

Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), attributing his decision to growing internal disputes, persistent legal battles, and what he described as an increasingly toxic political atmosphere.

Obi made the announcement on Sunday through a statement posted on his official X account, revealing that the decision came after deep personal reflection following church service.

He spoke candidly about the emotional weight of public service, noting that many Nigerians often fail to appreciate the private struggles faced by individuals committed to genuine leadership.

According to him, Nigeria’s political landscape has become deeply troubling, marked by insecurity, intimidation, constant scrutiny, and discouragement, making it increasingly difficult for sincere leaders to thrive.

Obi also expressed disappointment over what he termed betrayal from some allies, lamenting that individuals who publicly identify with him sometimes distance themselves behind closed doors or even join in criticizing him unfairly.

The former Anambra State governor emphasized that throughout his political journey, he has remained committed to humility, service, and uplifting others, insisting that leadership should be about sacrifice and nation-building rather than oppression or personal gain.

Clarifying his departure, Obi stated that his decision was not motivated by any personal grievances against the ADC leadership. He specifically acknowledged the party’s National Chairman, Senator David Mark, as well as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, describing them as respected leaders for whom he still holds deep regard.

However, Obi noted that the same political interference and internal instability that plagued his time in the Labour Party now appear to be resurfacing within the ADC. He pointed to endless court cases, factional struggles, suspicion, and division as signs that the party was drifting away from its core mission.

He further revealed that even in political spaces where he had invested sincerely, he often felt isolated and unfairly blamed for challenges beyond his control.

Despite stepping away, Obi maintained that his commitment to Nigeria remains unwavering. He stressed that his ambition has never been about occupying high office, but about building a nation where citizens can live safely, feed their families, and enjoy dignity.

Reaffirming his hope for the country, Obi declared that Nigeria can still achieve competent, compassionate, and just leadership.

“A New Nigeria is Possible,” he concluded.
