Nigerian Army Hosts Fourth Quarter Media Chat in Jos, Seeks Stronger Civil–Military Collaboration Through Strategic Communication

The Nigerian Army, through its Department of Civil–Military Affairs, on Thursday convened the Fourth Quarter 2025 Media Chat in Jos, bringing together security experts, media practitioners, academics, and strategic communication specialists to deepen conversations around security reporting, public trust, and national unity.

The engagement, held at Crispan Suites and Event Centre, Rayfield, centred on the theme “The Nigerian Security Environment: Role of Strategic Communication in Strengthening Civil–Military Relations.” The conference highlighted rising security challenges, the influence of information technology, and the urgent need for accurate, ethical, and responsible communication.

Retired Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman, former spokesperson of the Nigerian Army, set the tone by emphasising that truth, trust, transparency, and accountability remain crucial pillars in rebuilding and strengthening the relationship between the media and the military. He expressed concern over longstanding misconceptions fuelled by misinformation, disinformation, and poor synergy, noting that these issues have significantly strained civil–military relations over the years. He urged both institutions to view each other as partners in nation-building whose roles are indispensable for peace and stability.

Representing the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Waheed Shaibu, the General Officer Commanding 3 Division and Commander Operation Enduring Peace, Major General Eyitayo Oyinlola, said the Nigerian Army is increasingly adopting non-kinetic approaches to address the nation’s evolving security threats. He noted that the advancement of ICT has significantly changed how information spreads, making fake news, propaganda, and the irresponsible release of sensitive information major risks to national security.

“This has necessitated collaboration between the Nigerian Army and media stakeholders to foster a formidable front against shared security challenges,” he stated, adding that the Army will continue to engage the public through open communication and strategic partnerships.

Chief of Civil–Military Affairs, Major General Musa Etsu-Ndagi, explained that the theme of the event was intentionally chosen to harmonise patriotic efforts between the Army and media practitioners in pursuit of national security objectives. He urged journalists to uphold the highest standards of credible, ethical, and responsible reporting to strengthen public confidence and national cohesion.

A key highlight of the event was a lecture delivered by Professor Eze Cosmos of the Mass Communication Department, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, who examined strategic communication as a powerful tool for combating violent extremism and insurgency. He stressed the importance of shaping narratives that promote peace, counter extremist ideologies, and reinforce national unity.

The media chat also featured an engaging panel discussion involving senior military officers, academics, and media leaders, including Major General Mohammed Bello, Brigadier General Usman (Rtd), Professor Taye Obatomi, and Mrs. Ayiku Pwaspo, Chairperson of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Plateau State Council. Discussions centred on improving collaboration, enhancing security reportage, building trust, and creating unified approaches to information management.

The Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Mallam Salihu Dembos—represented by Mrs. Rifkatu Daniel—commended the Nigerian Army for sustaining dialogue with media professionals. He reaffirmed NTA’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote accurate, balanced, and responsible journalism.

Delivering a goodwill message, Plateau State Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Adesina, praised the Army for advancing non-kinetic strategies that complement policing and armed operations. He noted that such engagements play a major role in strengthening security frameworks across the country.

Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Mr. Polycarp Auta, also commended the Army for prioritising peacebuilding and encouraged sustained collaboration with media organisations to improve public enlightenment.

The event concluded with an interactive session between journalists and the Chief of Civil–Military Affairs, Major General Etsu-Ndagi, offering participants an opportunity to ask questions, provide feedback, and collectively explore ways of enhancing national security through effective communication and strengthened civil–military relations.

The Fourth Quarter Media Chat underscored the Nigerian Army’s commitment to openness, partnership, and strategic engagement as essential tools for addressing contemporary security challenges in Nigeria.

Global Peace Development Flags Off PARSULP Initiative to Transform Agropastoral Relations in Plateau

Global Peace Development (GPD) on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, officially launched the Promoting Agropastoralism Reconciliation and Resilience for Sustainable Livelihood and Peace (PARSULP) Project at Vila Grande, Gold and Base, Rayfield, Jos. The event brought together stakeholders from affected communities, government agencies, development partners, and the media to unveil a comprehensive intervention aimed at strengthening peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders across four states.

The PARSULP project seeks to rebuild trust, promote sustainable livelihood practices, and enhance climate-resilient food systems through community-centered strategies. Spanning 45 wards across Plateau, Benue, Kaduna, and Katsina States, the project focuses on conflict transformation, women empowerment, climate-smart agriculture, forest protection advocacy, and the development of 42 Community Peace and Resilience Plans (CPRPs). The launch signals the beginning of targeted engagements in Riyom communities, addressing the root causes of agropastoral conflicts through dialogue, training, policy engagements, and reconciliation forums.

Ebruke O. Esike, Executive Director of Global Peace Development, welcomed stakeholders to the launch, underscoring the project’s significance in tackling longstanding conflicts between farmers and herders in northern and central Nigeria. He explained that increasing competition over land and water has displaced thousands, eroded social cohesion, and deepened poverty.
Esike highlighted the project’s funding support from Tetra Tech/UKAID and its implementation in partnership with ActionAid Nigeria. He emphasized that PARSULP will deepen reconciliation through inclusive dialogue, agro-pastoral and agroforestry initiatives, and strong policy advocacy. The development of Community Peace and Resilience Plans, he noted, is central to rebuilding trust, reinforcing local peace structures, and fostering sustainable livelihoods.

Project Manager, Danjuma Mohammed appreciated stakeholders for their commitment, describing Riyom as a crucial entry point because of its history of persistent conflict. He stressed that PARSULP’s success depends on community ownership and active participation. Danjuma explained that the project is designed not only to address conflict triggers but to rebuild economically vulnerable households, ensuring long-term stability and peaceful coexistence.

HRH Samuel Jok, District Head of Riyom, expressed delight at the PARSULP launch, emphasizing that lasting peace depends on community commitment rather than security agencies alone. He urged stakeholders to embrace dialogue, cooperation, and reconciliation, highlighting that peace is essential for development, security, and the prosperity of Plateau’s communities.

Rwang Markus Pam, representing the Plateau State Commissioner for Agriculture, praised the PARSULP initiative, noting agriculture’s vital role in both crop and livestock production. He emphasized the mutual benefits of cooperation between farmers and herders, urging stakeholders to reflect on past mistakes, rebuild trust, and harness shared opportunities for peace and sustainable growth.

Kenneth Dakup, representing the Director General of the Plateau Peace Building Agency, delivered warm goodwill remarks on behalf of the agency. He commended GPD and partners for initiating a project that aligns with the agency’s humanitarian–development–peace (HDP) nexus. He emphasized that the agency prioritizes human dignity, especially for displaced persons and victims of violent attacks. Dakup encouraged the project team to collaborate with local institutions and leverage existing climate-smart and peacebuilding expertise to achieve project objectives.

Village Head of Riyom, Joshua Dong Kuron, welcomed the project and described it as timely and unprecedented. He noted that Riyom has faced severe destruction and displacement over the years, and urged the implementing partners to address the issues holistically while assuring full community cooperation.

Hon. Wyclife T. Wanson, Councillor of Riyom Ward, expressed deep appreciation for the focus on local development and peace. He pledged total support from the council and appealed to farmers, herders, youth, and elders to embrace reconciliation and commit to building lasting peace.

Nanman Bali, President of Plateau Peace Practitioners Network (PPPN), hailed the initiative, calling for stronger coordination and cooperation among communities. He assured that PPPN will provide maximum support and is open to partnering further to promote a peaceful Plateau.

A lively Q&A session followed, with stakeholders seeking clarifications on project implementation phases, community roles, expected impact, and sustainability measures. The project team responded comprehensively and reaffirmed their commitment to inclusiveness and accountability.

The official launch ceremony formally activated the PARSULP project in Riyom communities. The moment symbolized renewed hope, strengthened collaboration, and the beginning of transformative interventions that will improve relationships and livelihoods.

The ceremony ended with stakeholders expressing confidence that the PARSULP project will significantly advance peacebuilding, community resilience, and sustainable development across Plateau State and beyond. With Riyom as the starting point, the initiative is set to drive meaningful change and long-term social cohesion in the months and years ahead.

Tension As Gunshot Rocks PDP Headquarters

There is currently tension at the headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja over attempts to hold parallel meetings.

The National Working Committee (NWC) elected in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, and the faction backed by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, had fixed meetings for today.

Samuel Anyanwu, National Secretary of the pro-Wike faction, had arrived the Wadata Plaza with some members of the faction.

Shortly after, members of the Taminu Turaki faction also arrived the headquarters but were prevented from going in.

However, two governors forced their way in, but as the other members of the faction tried to make their way in, security operatives fired gunshots and also released teargas to disperse them.

The situation triggered confusion as many scuttled to safety.

While addressing journalists in his office before the arrival of the other faction, Anyanwu had said the security beef up was normal was to prevent breakdown of law and order.

He said his faction was ready for Board of Trustees (BoT) and the National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings.

CAN Delegates Arrive Plateau for Crucial National Executive Council Meeting

Delegates of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) arrived in Plateau State on Monday ahead of the National Executive Council meeting scheduled to flag off on Tuesday, November 18, 2025.

The delegation was received at the Yakubu Gowon Airport, Jos, by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Policy and Governance, Hon. Istifanus Mwansat, representing the Secretary to the State Government, Arc. Samuel Jatau, on behalf of Governor Caleb Mutfwang. The Plateau State CAN Chairman, Rev. Dr. Dunka Gomwalk, Special Adviser on Religious Affairs, Rev. Dr. Stephen Dang Gana, and other government officials were also present.

Speaking on arrival, the Vice President of CAN, Rev. Dr. Stephen Baba Panya, said the choice of Plateau State for the meeting was inspired by its strong Christian heritage and its reputation for hospitality.
“It is a pleasure and privilege for us to be here. We have come for our National Executive CAN meeting starting tomorrow. Our President, His Eminence Archbishop Daniel O’Call, arrived ahead of us and will chair the meeting,”
he said.
“We are here to pray for Plateau—to plead with God for the peace, prosperity and progress of this state. Plateau has long been a strong Christian stronghold and a custodian of Christian heritage. Jos remains a welcoming city, and we believe our coming will encourage the people and showcase the hospitality the state is known for.”

Delegates Tour Ten Commandments Ground
While conducting the delegation on a tour of the Ten Commandments Prayer Ground, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Policy and Governance, Yilchap Abraham, explained that the site—originally envisioned by former Governor Jonah Jang—has undergone significant expansion to accommodate larger worship gatherings.

He noted that the main seating capacity of 5,800 has been enlarged with additional wings of 1,200 and 1,000 seats each, pushing total capacity to nearly 8,000.
The VIP and ministers’ platforms have also been expanded ahead of this year’s Plateau Unity Christmas Festival, described as one of the largest state-hosted Christian praise gatherings in Nigeria.

“There is no politics here—only Christ and worship. All tribes and political affiliations dissolve in worship. The governor’s vision is for Christians to gather as one body to celebrate Christ together,”
Abraham said.

CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Oko, described Plateau as not only the “Home of Peace and Tourism” but also the “Home of Hospitality,” expressing gratitude for the reception accorded the delegation.

“We came to attend the fourth quarterly meeting of the CAN Executive Council. Sometimes we take our meetings outside Abuja to stay connected to Christians at the grassroots,”
he said.
“We are also here to pray with the people of Plateau. This meeting should have held in May but was postponed due to the passing of the state CAN chairman. We pray that the Lord brings lasting peace to Plateau.”

He added that Christians should expect a message of hope and solidarity as the country navigates difficult times.

Welcoming the national delegation, Plateau CAN Chairman, Rev. Dr. Dunka Gomwalk, described the visit as a divine blessing coming at a critical moment for the state.

“It is an honor to receive the national executive so early in our tenure. Plateau has gone through many security and social challenges, and this visit is strategically timed by God to bring blessing upon the land,”
he said.
“We believe the aftermath of this meeting will usher in greater stability and peace like never before.”

The delegation was also received by the Plateau State Advisory Council on Inter-Religious Harmony.

Co-chair Rev. Pandam Yamsat, former COCIN President, welcomed the team, noting the importance of strengthening religious unity across the state.

His Royal Highness, The Emir of Wase, Alhaji Mohammed Sambo Haruna, who co-chairs the Council and also leads the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) in Plateau, was ably represented and extended goodwill messages on behalf of the Muslim community.

Federal Government Launches Community-Based Peace Structures in Plateau State

In a renewed commitment to fostering peace and unity, the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (North Central), in collaboration with the International Communities Organization (ICO), has launched community-based peace structures in Plateau State. The event, themed “Building Social Cohesion and Peace in Plateau State,” took place on November 13, 2025, at Odilin’s Event and Decorations Centre, Jos, bringing together key stakeholders from across the 17 local government areas.

The program commenced with a virtual welcome address by Mr. James Holmes, Secretary General of the International Communities Organization (ICO), who applauded the government’s initiative in strengthening community peacebuilding efforts. Holmes prayed for peaceful coexistence among Nigerians and expressed ICO’s readiness to deepen partnerships with both federal and state governments in advancing sustainable development and community resilience.

Representing the Executive Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, the Deputy Governor, Her Excellency Ngo Josephine Piyo, delivered the Governor’s remarks, reaffirming the state government’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace and security across Plateau State. She emphasized that peace remains the foundation of progress and that the administration prioritizes rebuilding trust and inclusivity among diverse communities. Governor Mutfwang highlighted ongoing efforts to support displaced persons, promote dialogue, and strengthen early warning systems in collaboration with security agencies, traditional institutions, and faith-based organizations. He further noted that the government is investing in youth engagement, women empowerment, and job creation, describing these as pillars of sustainable peace. He urged participants to carry the lessons from the workshop to their local communities, stressing that “peace cannot be imposed; it must be built by communities for communities.”

Delivering her keynote address, Dr. Abiodun Essiet, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (North Central), described the launch as a milestone in the collective journey toward peace and unity in Nigeria. She stated that the initiative, which has also been implemented in Benue and Kogi States, seeks to establish sustainable structures for continuous dialogue, conflict prevention, and collaboration. Dr. Essiet underscored the need to strengthen early warning and early response systems, as most conflicts begin from small, neglected misunderstandings. She urged participants to rise above ethnic, political, and religious divisions, condemning all forms of criminality and calling for inclusivity in peacebuilding efforts. Drawing from the African philosophy of Ubuntu—“I am because you are”—she reminded all that peace and prosperity are interconnected, encouraging unity, truth, and justice in addressing communal challenges.

In his goodwill message, Hon. Ephraim Usman, Plateau State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, commended Dr. Essiet and the Federal Government for recognizing Plateau’s long-standing peace efforts. He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting initiatives that promote harmony and inclusiveness, urging participants to speak the truth and replicate peacebuilding lessons in their local communities. He shared a touching story of a young girl orphaned by violence, stressing the human cost of conflict and appealing for collective responsibility in fostering lasting peace.

Also speaking, Dr. Julie Sanda, Director General of the Plateau State Peace Building Agency, described the initiative as timely and heartwarming, noting that for the first time in years, the federal, state, and local governments are aligning efforts toward peace. She emphasized that peacebuilding must be community-driven, recognizing the indispensable roles of traditional rulers and grassroots leaders. “Peace must be local,” she said. “You build it, you own it, and you sustain it.” Dr. Sanda reaffirmed her agency’s commitment to continue partnering with federal authorities and local communities to sustain existing peace structures across the state.

Adding the voice of the youth, Mr. Panan Dapar, Chairman of the Plateau State Youth Council, hailed the initiative as a strong recognition of the state’s past and ongoing peace efforts. He applauded both the state and federal governments for building on structures like the Plateau Peace Building Agency and Operation Rainbow. Dapar stressed that the new community-based structure is vital because most conflicts begin in rural areas. He urged participants to ensure the structures are not just theoretical but practical and effective at the grassroots.

Following the remarks and goodwill messages, there were presentations on “Building Sustainable Community Structures for Peacebuilding” and “Community Early Warning and Early Response Systems.” The sessions focused on strategies for strengthening local participation, information sharing, and quick response mechanisms to prevent escalation of conflicts.

The event also featured a question-and-answer session, where participants from different local government areas interacted with facilitators, shared experiences, and proposed practical approaches for strengthening peace structures within their communities.

In conclusion, stakeholders reaffirmed their shared commitment to rebuilding trust and unity across Plateau State. The workshop closed on a hopeful note, with participants pledging to take ownership of peacebuilding processes and work collectively to restore Plateau to its rightful place as the “Home of Peace and Tourism.”
