New Studies Suggest Smartphone Use May Be Contributing to Falling Fertility Rates

Two recent studies have linked the rapid rise in smartphone adoption to declining fertility rates among women of reproductive age, suggesting that changes in social behavior driven by digital technology may be reshaping birth patterns worldwide.

One of the studies, titled The Collapse of Teen Fertility in the Digital Era, was conducted by economists Nathan Hudson and Hernan Moscoso Boedo of the University of Cincinnati. The researchers analyzed fertility trends across 128 countries and found a sharp decline in teenage birth rates beginning around 2007, coinciding with the widespread introduction of smartphones.

According to the study, the increasing use of smartphones may have marked a turning point as teenagers shifted from face-to-face interactions to digital communication. The researchers observed that this trend occurred across countries with varying social, economic, and policy environments.

The study also found that in-person socializing among young people dropped significantly as digital engagement increased. Researchers linked this shift not only to lower fertility rates but also to changes in sexual activity, mental health outcomes, suicide rates, and crime patterns.

Data showed that fertility rates fell most sharply among teenagers aged 15 to 19 in high-income countries after 2008. Moderate declines were recorded among women aged 20 to 24, while fertility levels among those aged 25 and older—who make up the majority of women of reproductive age—remained relatively stable.

In the United States, birth rates among girls aged 15 to 19 declined by 71 percent during the study period. Rates also dropped by 43 percent among women aged 20 to 24 and by 23 percent among those aged 25 to 29. Smaller declines were recorded among older age groups.

The researchers argued that the drop in births was not primarily due to delayed childbearing or increased abortion rates. Instead, they pointed to fewer conceptions resulting from reduced face-to-face interaction among young people.

The study noted that improved broadband and 4G coverage in the United States provided evidence of a causal relationship between digital connectivity and declining teen fertility. It also found that in-person socializing among teenagers was cut roughly in half while time spent on digital leisure activities nearly tripled.

A second study by economists Caitlin K. Myers and Ezekiel Hooper, titled Is the iPhone Birth Control? Causal Evidence from AT&T’s 2007–2011 Carrier Monopoly, reached similar conclusions.

Using mobile broadband coverage data, birth records, and county-level demographic information, the researchers examined the impact of the iPhone’s launch in 2007 on fertility trends. They found that U.S. birth rates, which had remained relatively stable between 1980 and 2007, began a steep decline after the smartphone’s introduction and continued falling through the 2010s and into the 2020s.

The study reported a 70 percent decline in birth rates among teenagers and a 47 percent drop among women aged 20 to 24. In contrast, birth rates among women aged 35 to 39 increased by 14 percent during the same period.

Researchers described the iPhone and the rise of social media as major technological shifts that altered how young people worked, socialized, and formed relationships. These changes were associated with reduced dating, lower participation in paid work, fewer sexual partners, and increased sexual inactivity among young adults.

The authors estimated that smartphone adoption may have accounted for between 21 and 31 percent of the decline in teen births between 2007 and 2011, with significant effects also observed among women aged 20 to 29.

Overall, both studies suggest that smartphones may have played a role in reducing fertility rates by changing social interactions, particularly through decreased face-to-face engagement and shifts in sexual behavior among younger generations.

Senate Orders Security Agencies to Produce Ex-NNPCL Boss Kyari Over N210 Trillion Audit Queries

The Senate Public Accounts Committee has directed security agencies to ensure the appearance of former Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, before the National Assembly over unresolved audit queries amounting to N210 trillion.

The directive was issued on Wednesday during a committee session in Abuja, where lawmakers expressed dissatisfaction with Kyari’s repeated failure to honour invitations and summons relating to the ongoing investigation.

According to the committee, the former NNPCL chief is required to personally explain discrepancies and financial concerns highlighted in audit reports covering the period between 2017 and 2023.

Senators said the audit issues largely involve accrued expenses and sundry receivables recorded in the company’s financial statements. They noted that explanations previously submitted by NNPCL officials did not adequately address the concerns raised by auditors.

Members of the committee described the amount under review as significant, stressing that the unresolved queries raise serious concerns about accountability, transparency, and the management of revenues generated from Nigeria’s oil sector.

The lawmakers unanimously agreed to invoke their constitutional oversight powers, directing relevant security agencies to compel Kyari’s appearance before the committee to respond to the audit findings.

The development follows earlier invitations and summons issued in March 2026 to Kyari and other former NNPCL officials as part of the Senate’s investigation into the audit reports.

Committee members maintained that both former and serving public officials entrusted with managing national resources must account for any financial discrepancies identified in official records.

The Senate’s latest action has intensified public attention on the legislative probe, given the scale of the funds involved and the critical role of the petroleum sector in Nigeria’s economy.

As of the time of filing this report, neither Kyari nor his representatives had issued any public response to the committee’s directive. :::

Verified Conversations and Inside Plateau, in collaboration with the Plateau State Ministry of Information and Communication, are set to host a Democracy 2027 Town Hall Meeting on Friday, June 12, 2026, at Crispan Hotel in Jos.

The event, scheduled to commence at 12:00 p.m., will bring together journalists, policymakers, civil society organizations, youth groups, government officials, and members of the public to discuss issues surrounding Nigeria’s democratic journey and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The announcement was made during a media briefing with journalists, where organizers emphasized the need for sustained civic engagement, inclusive dialogue, and active citizen participation in strengthening democratic governance in Plateau State and Nigeria.

Speaking at the briefing, the Convener of Verified Conversations, Samson Omale, said the initiative builds on the success of the group’s 2021 #2023Conversations project, which sought to engage citizens in the leadership recruitment process ahead of the 2023 elections.

According to Omale, the Democracy 2027 Town Hall aims to move political discussions beyond election campaigns by focusing on accountability, transparency, and citizen participation in governance.

He explained that the theme of this year’s engagement, “Politics Beyond Elections,” is designed to create a platform where citizens can directly engage public office holders, ask questions, and assess government performance through social accountability mechanisms.

Omale expressed confidence that the event would attract widespread participation, noting that several major radio stations have partnered with the organizers to ensure extensive coverage and audience engagement across Plateau State and beyond.

Also speaking, the Business Manager of Inside Plateau, Munta Phikwallayan, said the media platform is committed to documenting, showcasing, and promoting the positive stories and unique identity of Plateau State.

She noted that while negative narratives often dominate media coverage, many inspiring and untold stories from the state deserve greater visibility. According to her, Inside Plateau provides a platform for residents to tell their own stories and present a balanced perspective of the state.

Phikwallayan said the partnership with Verified Conversations reflects a shared commitment to fostering dialogue, bringing diverse stakeholders together, and creating opportunities for citizens to contribute meaningfully to discussions on governance and development.

The organizers said the town hall is expected to serve as a platform for constructive conversations on democracy, leadership, accountability, and citizen participation as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 electoral cycle.

Reps to Service Chiefs: Resign if Insecurity Persists

The House of Representatives has urged President Bola Tinubu to adopt a more aggressive and comprehensive approach to tackling Nigeria’s worsening security challenges, warning that the nation’s service chiefs should resign if they fail to restore public confidence and curb insecurity within a reasonable timeframe.

The call followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Rep. Ibe Osonwa, representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency of Abia State, during Tuesday’s plenary session.

Presenting the motion titled “A Call for Immediate Executive Action on the Surge in Banditry, the Daily Abduction of Schoolchildren and the Perilous Security Situation in Nigerian Schools and Places of Worship,” Osonwa expressed concern over the growing wave of kidnappings, banditry, terrorism, and attacks on communities across the country.

He reminded the Federal Government of its constitutional responsibility to protect citizens, citing Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, which states that the security and welfare of the people remain the primary purpose of government.

The lawmaker lamented the increasing attacks on schools, noting that the abduction of students in several parts of the country has disrupted education and worsened the out-of-school children crisis. He added that many families continue to suffer the emotional and psychological impact of kidnappings.

Osonwa also condemned the targeting of schools and places of worship by criminal groups, warning that institutions traditionally regarded as safe havens have become vulnerable to attacks, abductions, and killings.

He further highlighted the economic consequences of insecurity, saying businesses have shut down, farming communities have been abandoned, and many families have been pushed deeper into poverty.

According to him, the current security response appears inadequate and largely reactive, creating the perception that criminal groups are gaining control in some parts of the country.

Following deliberations, the House strongly condemned the continued incidents of banditry, mass abductions, and attacks on schools and religious centres nationwide.

Lawmakers resolved to send an urgent appeal to President Tinubu, urging him to fulfil his constitutional obligation to protect lives and property by deploying an “aggressive, unrelenting and comprehensive” security strategy aimed at dismantling criminal networks and securing vulnerable communities.

The House also called for the unconditional release of citizens held captive by criminal groups and stated that if the administration fails to halt the worsening security situation and regain public trust within a clearly defined period, the service chiefs should honourably step down from office.

To ensure implementation of its resolutions, the House mandated its Committees on Defence, National Security and Intelligence, and Army to intensify oversight and report back within two weeks for further legislative action.

Nigeria continues to face multiple security threats, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping for ransom, and communal violence, particularly in the North-West, North-Central, and North-East regions, with repeated mass abductions of students drawing national and international concern.

Plateau Unveils 2026 SMC Campaign, Targets 1 Million Children, Names Ambassador

The Plateau State Government has officially flagged off the 2026 Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) campaign as part of efforts to protect children from malaria and further reduce the disease burden across the state.

The flag-off ceremony, held at the Crispan Event Center in Jos, brought together government officials, health practitioners, development partners, and other stakeholders committed to improving child health and malaria prevention.

The campaign is aimed at providing life-saving preventive malaria medication to eligible children during the peak malaria transmission season.

Speaking at the event, the Plateau State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Ba’amlong, commended the First Lady of Plateau State, Barr. Helen Mutfwang, for her commitment to the programme as the 2026 SMC Ambassador.

He noted that her support and advocacy had contributed significantly to efforts aimed at protecting children from malaria across the state.

Dr. Ba’amlong also praised the State Malaria Elimination Programme, Malaria Consortium, development partners, and frontline health workers for their roles in implementing seasonal malaria prevention initiatives that have helped reduce malaria cases in Plateau State.

The Commissioner further appreciated Governor Caleb Mutfwang for prioritizing the health sector and providing strong support for healthcare programmes in the state.

He called on all stakeholders, including community leaders and wives of local government chairmen, to support the campaign to ensure its success.

During the event, the First Lady of Plateau State, Barr. Helen Mutfwang, was officially crowned the 2026 Ambassador of the Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention campaign in recognition of her advocacy and commitment to the health and well-being of women and children.

Addressing participants, Barr. Mutfwang described the flag-off of the SMC campaign as another major step towards protecting children from malaria and improving public health across Plateau State.

She expressed delight over the progress recorded in malaria control, revealing that malaria prevalence in the state had dropped from 18.8 percent in 2021 to 2.8 percent in 2025 through the combined efforts of government, healthcare workers, communities, and development partners.

“This achievement demonstrates that with strong leadership, effective partnerships, and community participation, malaria can be defeated,” she said.

The First Lady urged parents and caregivers to ensure that eligible children receive the free SMC medicines during every cycle of the campaign.

She also commended Governor Caleb Mutfwang, Malaria Consortium, healthcare workers, and community volunteers for their contributions to the fight against malaria before officially flagging off the campaign.

Speaking during the event, Nurse Ndak Kizito Zuhumnan, Program Manager of the Plateau State Malaria Elimination Program, explained that the exercise was designed to mobilize stakeholders and communities to protect children from malaria during the peak transmission season.

He disclosed that community drug distributors, health workers, and supervisors would commence house-to-house visits from June to October to administer preventive malaria medicines to children aged three to 59 months across the state.

“The aim of this medication is to prevent children from coming down with malaria. We want to reach over one million children, and we urge parents and guardians to make every eligible child available for this free and safe intervention,” he stated.

Zuhumnan noted that Plateau State had recorded remarkable success in malaria control, attributing the achievement largely to the SMC programme and sustained collaboration among government agencies, health workers, development partners, the media, and community leaders.

In a goodwill message delivered on behalf of the West and Central Africa Programme Director of Malaria Consortium, Dr. Maxwell Kolawole, Dr. Mbwas Mashor commended the Plateau State Government and its partners for their commitment to malaria control efforts.

He stated that despite Nigeria’s high malaria burden, Plateau State had achieved significant progress in reducing malaria prevalence through sustained interventions and effective partnerships.

Dr. Mashor disclosed that the 2026 SMC campaign would target over one million eligible children across the state.

He reaffirmed Malaria Consortium’s continued support for malaria elimination efforts and called for stronger government ownership, sustained funding, and continued collaboration to sustain the gains already achieved.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Association of Primary Healthcare, Chundung Maina, commended Plateau State for its commitment to strengthening the health system through data-driven planning and implementation.

She noted that the progress recorded in the state reflected stronger political will, improved investment, and effective use of evidence in public health decision-making.

According to her, Plateau State is increasingly gaining national recognition as a model for health sector improvement, adding that sustained commitment and adequate financing remain critical to consolidating and expanding the gains already achieved in the health sector.

INEC Explains Appeal of Court Rulings on 2027 Election Timetable

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has explained the Commission’s decision to appeal two recent Federal High Court judgments that questioned aspects of its timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election, saying the rulings could create uncertainty and disrupt the electoral process.

Speaking on Tuesday at the Second Quarterly Consultative Meeting with Leaders of Political Parties in Abuja, Amupitan said the judgments raised significant legal questions regarding INEC’s constitutional and statutory powers to coordinate and regulate election-related activities.

According to him, one judgment delivered on May 20, 2026, in a suit filed by the Youth Party challenged certain timelines contained in the Commission’s election timetable, while another ruling delivered on May 26, 2026, in a case instituted by the Social Democratic Party (SDP), affirmed INEC’s authority to issue an electoral timetable but nullified some timelines relating to candidate nomination and substitution.

The INEC chairman stated that the Commission had appealed both judgments to obtain authoritative interpretations from higher courts. He stressed that electoral activities are interconnected processes that require a harmonised schedule to ensure transparency, certainty, administrative efficiency and equal treatment of all political parties.

Amupitan noted that several critical election activities, including verification of party membership registers, monitoring of party primaries, printing of ballot papers, configuration of BVAS machines and inspection of election materials, are not assigned specific timelines under the Electoral Act but must be accommodated within the overall electoral calendar.

He assured stakeholders that despite the pending appeals, INEC remains committed to conducting the 2027 General Election in full compliance with the Constitution and the Electoral Act.

The chairman also provided updates on preparations for the June 20, 2026, Ekiti State governorship election, revealing that the state’s voter register now contains 1,059,360 registered voters following the addition of 66,664 new registrants. He added that 2,103 cases of double registration had been invalidated to protect the integrity of the register.

Amupitan said logistics, technology deployment and training of election officials were progressing as planned, with all 2,445 polling units across Ekiti’s 16 local government areas expected to open simultaneously at 8:30 a.m. on election day.

He further announced that six bye-elections would hold on the same day in Enugu North, Nasarawa North, Rivers South-East and Ondo South Senatorial Districts, as well as Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency in Kano State and Zuru State Constituency in Kebbi State.

On preparations for the 2027 elections, the INEC chairman disclosed that political parties would receive access codes to the Candidate Nomination Portal on June 26, warning that the automated system would close at the end of the prescribed submission period without extension.

Responding on behalf of political parties, the National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Dr. Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, endorsed INEC’s decision to challenge the court rulings, describing the judgments as conflicting and capable of creating confusion among political parties and candidates.

Dantalle also urged the National Assembly to review the Electoral Act 2026, particularly provisions governing party primaries, arguing that some sections had created operational difficulties and contributed to disputes that are now before the courts.

He further condemned political violence in Osun State and called on politicians to embrace peaceful, issue-based campaigns ahead of upcoming governorship elections and the 2027 General Election.

NLC, TUC Threaten Nationwide Strike Over Escalating Insecurity, Demand Wage Review

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in the country, warning that organised labour may embark on a nationwide strike if urgent measures are not taken to protect citizens.

NLC President, , issued the warning on Monday while addressing delegates at the ongoing in .

Ajaero said Nigerian workers are increasingly carrying out their daily activities under the constant threat of kidnappings, banditry, and other violent crimes, describing the situation as unacceptable.

According to him, the safety and security of workers have become critical concerns, with many citizens leaving their homes each day uncertain of returning safely. He stressed that organised labour would not remain passive if the security crisis continues to worsen.

The labour leader noted that insecurity has negatively impacted productivity and the overall well-being of workers across various sectors, emphasizing that safeguarding lives and property remains the primary responsibility of government.

In addition to security concerns, the NLC and TUC called on the Federal Government to begin preparations for a fresh renegotiation of the national minimum wage. The unions argued that rising inflation and the increasing cost of living have made a wage review imperative.

They maintained that discussions on a new wage structure should commence before the current agreement expires next year, noting that early engagement would help prevent delays and potential industrial disputes.

The labour unions reiterated their position that Nigerian workers deserve a living wage capable of meeting basic needs amid prevailing economic challenges.

Although no date has been announced for industrial action, the warning signals growing tension between organised labour and the government over security and economic issues, raising the prospect of a nationwide strike if their demands are not addressed.

Verify Facts Before Judging Government Projects, Langtang North Council Tells Residents

The Executive Chairman of Langtang North Local Government Area, Hon. Pirfa Jingfa Tyem, has called on residents to rely on verified information and official records when assessing government projects and budgetary allocations, amid growing public discussions over development initiatives in the council area.

In a statement issued on behalf of the chairman by his Chief Press Secretary, Kum Precious, the council acknowledged increasing public interest in governance and accountability but expressed concern over what it described as misleading interpretations of budget provisions circulating on social media.

The chairman emphasized that the approved 2026 budget of Langtang North Local Government is a public document and remains accessible to residents through the Plateau State Government’s transparency platform. He urged citizens to consult official documents before drawing conclusions about public expenditures and project implementation.

According to the statement, a budget serves as a planning and appropriation framework outlining proposed projects, anticipated revenues, and development priorities, noting that the inclusion of a project in the budget does not necessarily mean it has been completed, abandoned, or fully funded.

The council maintained that several projects recently questioned in public discussions are part of the 2026 fiscal framework and are currently at various stages of implementation.

Among the projects highlighted was the construction of the Supervisory Councillors’ Office at the Local Government Secretariat, which the council said is ongoing. It also disclosed that procurement processes for the solar streetlight initiative have been completed, with arrangements underway for shipment, installation, and deployment.

The statement further revealed that fencing works are progressing at Zamko Market, while boreholes have already been drilled to support the construction of sanitation and toilet facilities aimed at improving hygiene and commercial activities within the market.

The chairman urged residents to distinguish between proposed, ongoing, and completed projects to avoid misconceptions about government activities.

He also reminded the public that he assumed office in October 2024 and encouraged citizens to differentiate between projects and expenditures that predate his administration and those undertaken under his leadership.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and prudent resource management, Tyem said the council would soon begin publishing detailed updates on ongoing and completed projects across the local government area. The updates, according to the statement, will include photographs, project locations, implementation timelines, and progress reports to enable residents to monitor development efforts.

The chairman assured residents that his administration remains focused on delivering projects across key sectors, including education, agriculture, healthcare, infrastructure, water resources, security, youth development, and community advancement.

He called for continued public engagement while pledging that the council would remain committed to serving the people of Langtang North with integrity, responsibility, and transparency.
