Plateau Child Abuse Cris!s: 36 Cases Recorded in Three Months, CPN Sounds Alarm

Plateau State is facing a worsening child protection crisis, with the Child Protection Network (CPN) recording 36 cases of child abuse in just three months and rating the situation 9 out of 10.

The Child Protection Network, Plateau State, has raised the alarm over the growing cases of violence, neglect, exploitation and abuse against children across the state, warning that the reported figures may only represent a fraction of the actual situation.

State Coordinator of the CPN, Sandra Chikan, disclosed during an interview with Plateau Bloggers and Online Media Association that the network receives an average of at least three child protection cases every week through its helplines.

She said the scale of the crisis was serious enough to rate child abuse in Plateau at 9 out of 10, stressing that the problem is not limited to conflict-affected communities or internally displaced persons.

According to the CPN coordinator, children across different communities are being exposed to several forms of vulnerability, including child labour, artisanal mining, substance abuse, trafficking, domestic violence and sexual abuse.

She expressed particular concern over reports of children as young as three and four years old being taken to mining sites.

Chikan also disclosed that some children as young as seven and eight have reportedly been found staying outside their homes until the early hours of the morning, with some becoming exposed to drugs and other harmful activities.

Some children, she said, are allegedly being used to carry or sell drugs, while others become vulnerable to trafficking after being pushed into informal jobs.

The network also identified violence within homes as a major child protection concern.

Chikan cited cases involving children allegedly subjected to physical abuse by guardians, including a girl whose hand was reportedly broken by her guardian.

She said children brought into homes as domestic helps are also among those vulnerable to violence and exploitation.

In another reported case, a boy was allegedly sleeping inside a tricycle, regularly beaten and denied food.

Underage girls working long hours in restaurants without adequate food or proper care were also among the cases brought to the network.

“Neglect is high,” Chikan said, warning that inadequate parental supervision leaves children exposed to abuse and exploitation.

Despite the scale of the challenge, the CPN said it has been able to secure positive outcomes in most of the cases it handled.

Of the 36 cases recorded during the last quarter, 85 per cent received outcomes described by the network as justice for the affected children.

The network explained that justice does not necessarily mean prosecution or conviction.

In some cases, children were reunited with their parents, while others were removed from unsafe environments and placed in safer settings.

Others received medical treatment, counselling, educational support or temporary shelter while arrangements were made for their reunification or alternative care.

To expand its interventions, the Child Protection Network has launched the Save the Plateau Child Initiative, a six-month campaign aimed at raising ₦200 million.

The funds will be used to strengthen child protection structures and interventions across all 17 local government areas of Plateau State.

The initiative includes plans to establish school-based child rights clubs, create child protection committees across the LGAs, strengthen the capacity of relevant agencies and produce educational and sensitisation materials.

Child protection committees have already been established in five LGAs with support from SOS, with plans to extend the programme across the state.

The Plateau State Government has so far contributed ₦10 million to the initiative.

Chikan appealed to individuals, businesses, organisations and other levels of government to support the campaign.

The network also disclosed that it currently does not operate a permanent safe home for rescued or vulnerable children.

It relies on partner organisations and existing shelters for longer-term accommodation, while its office has only a small emergency space for urgent cases.

The CPN works with organisations including child-focused foundations, homes and shelters, the Ministry of Women Affairs and the Association of Orphanages and Homes Operators.

It is also involved in efforts to strengthen the legal and institutional framework for child protection in Plateau, including the review of the Plateau State Child Rights Law and the implementation of child rights committees at state and local government levels.

The Child Protection Network called on parents, communities, government institutions and other stakeholders to treat child protection as a collective responsibility.

It urged members of the public to report suspected cases early rather than waiting until abuse escalates.

The network stressed that protecting children requires more than responding to abuse after it occurs, insisting that prevention, public awareness, early reporting and effective referral systems are equally critical.

With 36 cases handled in just one quarter and the network rating the situation at 9 out of 10, the CPN says urgent and sustained action is needed to protect children across Plateau State.

FG Launches Online Portal to Verify Academic Certificates Without Visiting Ministry

The Federal Government has launched a new online portal that allows Nigerians and other applicants to evaluate and authenticate academic certificates without physically visiting the Federal Ministry of Education.

The new system, introduced by the Federal Ministry of Education, is designed to make academic certificate verification faster, easier and more transparent, while reducing the delays and bureaucratic bottlenecks associated with the previous process.

The development is part of the government’s broader digital transformation agenda aimed at moving more public services online.

Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, said the automated credential evaluation and authentication system represents a major step towards modernising education governance and delivering more efficient services to citizens.

According to the Ministry, applicants can now submit their requests, provide the required information and process their academic credential verification online without making physical visits to government offices.

The system is expected to particularly benefit Nigerians living abroad, as well as employers, institutions and other authorised stakeholders seeking to verify academic qualifications.

How to Verify Academic Certificates Online

Applicants who want to evaluate or authenticate their academic certificates through the Federal Ministry of Education can follow these steps:

1. Visit the official verification portal

Go to the Federal Ministry of Education’s dedicated academic certificate verification and authentication portal:

FG Academic Certificate Verification Portal

2. Start your application

Select the appropriate option to begin the credential evaluation or authentication process and provide the information requested on the platform.

3. Submit your academic details

Complete the online application and provide accurate information about your academic credentials.

Applicants are advised to carefully check all submitted information before completing the process.

4. Track your request

The automated system is designed to make the processing of credential verification more organised and transparent, allowing applicants to follow their requests electronically.

5. Contact the Ministry if you need help

Applicants who require clarification or assistance with the process can contact the Federal Ministry of Education via ess1@education.gov.ng.

Why FG Introduced Online Certificate Verification

The Federal Government said the new platform is aimed at reducing bureaucracy, eliminating unnecessary delays and improving access to academic credential verification services.

Beyond individual applicants, the system is expected to provide a more efficient mechanism for employers, educational institutions and other stakeholders to authenticate academic qualifications.

The initiative is also expected to strengthen the credibility and integrity of Nigeria’s academic certification system by providing a more structured digital process for credential verification.

Dr Alausa said the Ministry would continue to leverage technology to improve education administration, enhance institutional efficiency and provide services that are more responsive to the needs of Nigerians.

Army Shakes Up Top Command, Redeploys Generals Across Key Security Theatres

The Nigerian Army has announced a major shake-up of its senior command structure, redeploying a number of generals to critical operational, formation, training and strategic positions as the military intensifies efforts to confront Nigeria’s evolving security threats.

The sweeping postings, approved by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Major General Waidi Shaibu, affect some of the Army’s most strategic commands and institutions, including Operation HADIN KAI, Defence Headquarters, Army formations, the Army War College and the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation.

The Army said the exercise is designed to inject fresh leadership into critical areas, strengthen operational effectiveness and ensure that officers with the requisite experience and expertise are deployed where they are most needed.

The Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele, disclosed the changes in a statement on Wednesday.

Ajose Takes Over Operation HADIN KAI

One of the biggest changes is the deployment of Major General IA Ajose from the Army Headquarters Department of Army Operations to become the new Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, the Army’s major counter-insurgency operation in the region.

He takes over from Major General AE Abubakar, who has been redeployed to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre as Dean, Faculty of Operational Research.

Major General AM Alechenu has also been moved from the Defence Headquarters Garrison to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre.

Meanwhile, Major General RT Utsaha moves from the Army Headquarters Department of Army Standards and Evaluation to the Defence Headquarters Garrison as Commander.

Major Changes at War College, Civil-Military Affairs

The reshuffle also sees Major General AM Umar move from the Army Headquarters Department of Civil-Military Affairs to become Commandant of the Army War College Nigeria.

His place at the Department of Civil-Military Affairs will be taken by Major General UM Alkali, who moves from the Army War College Nigeria.

In another major strategic posting, Major General GS Muhammed moves from the Office of the National Security Adviser to the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation as Director General.

Major General JE Osifo, who previously served at the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation, has been redeployed to the Military Pension Board as Chairman.

The Army has also appointed Major General IE Ekpenyong as Director, Engineering Services, at the Defence Headquarters Department of Defence Logistics.

Brigade, Division Commands Also Affected

Several brigadier generals have equally received new operational assignments.

Brigadier General AA Bello moves from 6 Division Garrison/Sector 3 Joint Task Force South-South, Operation Delta Safe, to the Defence Headquarters Department of Defence Operations.

Brigadier General MS Adamu leaves the Nigerian Army Women Command to assume command of the newly established 8 Brigade.

Brigadier General MS Sule has been redeployed from the Special Task Force, Operation Enduring Peace, to become Commander of 27 Brigade.

At 6 Division Garrison, Brigadier General I Sule takes over as Commander after his transfer from the Directorate of Recruitment Management.

Brigadier General E Azenda moves from the Land Forces Simulation Centre to command 2 Division Garrison.

Following the change, Brigadier General AS Bugaje moves from 2 Division Garrison to the Land Forces Simulation Centre as Director of Administration.

The Army said the redeployments are aimed at ensuring that “the right leadership, experience and expertise” are positioned across critical operational theatres and strategic appointments.

The COAS charged the newly appointed officers to justify the confidence reposed in them through exemplary leadership, operational innovation and professionalism.

He further tasked them to remain committed to defending Nigeria’s sovereignty, protecting its territorial integrity and supporting civil authorities in maintaining peace and security.

The latest shake-up comes as the Nigerian military continues to adjust its operational and command structures in response to the country’s complex and changing security environment.

Peter Obi, Alfred Dapal Donate ₦4m to Mangu IDPs During Solidarity Visit

Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has visited internally displaced persons (IDPs) taking refuge at the Central Primary School in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, donating ₦2 million to support families affected by insecurity.

Obi was accompanied by prominent NDC chieftain, Alfred Dapal Damiyal (ADD), who also donated an additional ₦2 million to the displaced families, bringing the total donation from the two political leaders to ₦4 million.

The visit was part of Obi’s solidarity tour of Mangu following recent attacks that forced residents from their communities and heightened concerns over insecurity in the area.

The delegation was received on behalf of the Mishkagham Mwaghavul by four district heads representing Mangu, Bungha, Kombili and Hale.

Speaking on behalf of the traditional leaders, the Mangu District Head expressed appreciation to Obi for identifying with the displaced persons and commended Alfred Dapal Damiyal for facilitating the presidential candidate’s visit to Mangu.

He described ADD as a son of the community who had demonstrated concern for his people by bringing Obi to directly engage with residents affected by insecurity.

During his interaction with the IDPs, Obi expressed concern over the continued displacement of Nigerians due to insecurity, describing the plight of internally displaced persons as a national issue requiring urgent attention.

“As far as IDPs remain displaced, the whole of Nigeria is displaced.”

Obi stressed that humanitarian donations, while necessary, must be accompanied by sustainable measures to restore security and create conditions for displaced families to return home safely.

He called for stronger action to protect vulnerable communities, rebuild affected areas and restore the livelihoods and dignity of Nigerians forced to flee their homes.

The visit also provided an opportunity for Obi to listen to the concerns of displaced families and engage with traditional leaders on the challenges confronting communities affected by insecurity.

With the combined ₦4 million donation by Obi and ADD, the NDC delegation reaffirmed its solidarity with the affected families while calling for lasting solutions that will enable residents of Mangu to return to their communities in safety and dignity.

Nigerians Abroad Can Now Renew Passports Remotely Without Embassy Biometric Appointment

Nigerians living outside the country can now renew their passports without physically visiting a Nigerian embassy or high commission for biometric enrolment, following the introduction of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) contactless passport renewal system.

The new process allows eligible applicants to complete key stages of their passport renewal remotely, including biometric enrolment, while using their National Identification Number (NIN) and date of birth for identity verification.

How Nigerians Abroad Can Renew Their Passports Remotely

Applicants are required to begin the process through the official Nigerian Immigration Service passport portal by selecting “Apply from Outside Nigeria” and choosing “Apply for Renewal or Reissue.”

They will then create an account, verify their identity with their NIN and date of birth, complete the application form, select a preferred processing embassy and upload the required documents.

After payment of the applicable passport fee, the applicant will receive an Application ID and Reference Number, which should be kept for subsequent stages of the process.

At this point, applicants can choose between a physical appointment and the contactless option, where available.

Those eligible for contactless processing can select “Opt in for Contactless” from the application status or appointment section and follow the instructions provided.

Applicants will also need to download the NRS mobile app, sign in or create an account, and select “Passport Application Services” followed by “Passport Biometric Enrolment.”

The Application ID and Reference Number are then entered into the app to determine eligibility.

If approved for the contactless process, applicants will be guided through the capture of their facial image and fingerprints using the mobile application. The biometric information will subsequently be submitted for review.

Once the biometric submission has been successfully reviewed and the applicant confirmed eligible, the contactless service fee will be required.

What Happens If You Are Not Eligible?

Applicants who do not qualify for the contactless option can return to the passport portal and schedule a physical biometric appointment at their selected Nigerian embassy or high commission.

Following completion of the required payment, applicants should print their application form and retrieve their current passport.

Both documents should be placed in a self-addressed return envelope and sent to the selected processing mission as instructed.

Applicants can begin tracking their passport application approximately two weeks after submission through the official tracking portal or the NRS mobile application.

The contactless system is aimed at reducing the need for Nigerians abroad to travel to embassies solely for passport biometric enrolment, potentially saving applicants time and travel costs.

The NIS has advised applicants to rely only on official Nigerian Immigration Service platforms and channels for passport applications and renewals to avoid fraud.

How To Become A Dangote Refinery Shareholder With N5,250

Nigerians will soon have the opportunity to own a stake in the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE as the company prepares to launch what is being described as Africa’s largest Initial Public Offering (IPO).

The offer is scheduled to open on Monday, September 14, 2026, and close on October 13, 2026, subject to the terms contained in the final offer documents.

Dangote Group Chief Executive Officer, Aliko Dangote, signed the offer documents on Monday, September 7, at a ceremony held at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, alongside the advisers and issuing houses handling the transaction.

The IPO involves 4.1 billion ordinary shares at N525 per share, with the refinery seeking to raise approximately N2.15 trillion to partly finance an expansion that would increase its refining capacity to about 1.4 million barrels per day.

The minimum subscription is 10 shares, meaning an investor can participate with as little as N5,250.

Dangote said the low entry point was designed to make the offer accessible to ordinary Nigerians, including workers such as drivers, cooks and domestic staff, describing it as “the IPO for the people.”

With the offer expected to attract significant public interest, here is a simple guide on how prospective investors can participate.

1. Open a Brokerage Account

Shares listed on the Nigerian Exchange are purchased through licensed stockbroking firms.

Anyone without an existing trading account will need to open one with a broker registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Nigerian Exchange (NGX).

Many brokers allow customers to complete registration online by providing documents such as a Bank Verification Number (BVN), valid identification and a passport photograph.

Investors should verify that their chosen broker is properly licensed before transferring any funds.

2. Set Up or Link Your CSCS Account

Shares are held electronically through the Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) rather than through physical certificates.

A new investor will usually have a CSCS account created through the broker, while investors who already have one can have it linked to their brokerage account.

Any Dangote Refinery shares allotted to an investor will be credited electronically to the investor’s CSCS account.

3. Complete Your Verification

The broker will require you to complete its Know-Your-Customer (KYC) and identity verification process before you can participate in the offer.

Documentation may vary between brokers, so investors should follow the requirements provided by their chosen stockbroker.

4. Fund Your Investment Account

After activating the account, fund it with the amount you intend to invest.

At N525 per share, the minimum subscription of 10 shares will cost N5,250.

Investors intending to purchase more shares should check the final prospectus for the applicable application increments and other subscription conditions before submitting their applications.

It is advisable to have the funds available before the offer opens on September 14.

5. Confirm the Official Opening Date

The Dangote Refinery IPO is scheduled to open on September 14 and close on October 13, 2026.

However, prospective investors should rely on the final prospectus and official announcements from the issuing houses, SEC and NGX for the definitive dates and procedures.

This is particularly important given reports of strong demand surrounding Dangote Refinery’s earlier private placement.

6. Submit Your Application Through Approved Channels

Once the offer opens, investors can apply through participating stockbrokers and other platforms specifically approved and listed in the official offer documents.

Applicants should carefully enter the number of shares they wish to purchase, review their application and submit it before the closing date.

Investors should also be cautious of fraudulent individuals or platforms requesting money for Dangote Refinery shares. Payments should only be made through verified and officially approved channels.

7. Wait for the Allotment

Applying for shares does not necessarily mean an investor will receive the entire number requested.

If the IPO is oversubscribed, the number of shares allocated to individual investors may be reduced in accordance with the terms of the offer.

Where an investor is not allocated all the shares applied for, any applicable excess funds should be refunded according to the conditions contained in the prospectus.

Successful allotments will be credited to investors’ CSCS accounts.

8. Monitor Your Shares After Listing

Once the shares are listed on the Nigerian Exchange, investors will be able to monitor their holdings through their stockbrokers.

The market value of the shares can rise or fall depending on the refinery’s performance, investor demand, market conditions and broader economic factors.

Shareholders can choose to hold their investment for the long term or sell their shares through their broker at the prevailing market price once trading begins.

Important Advice for Investors

Before committing money to the IPO, prospective investors should carefully read the official prospectus and offer documents when published.

They should also independently confirm the final offer price, application conditions, closing date and approved subscription channels through the issuing houses, SEC or NGX.

Most importantly, investors should avoid sending money to individuals or unverified platforms claiming to be selling Dangote Refinery shares.

The opportunity to invest may be open to ordinary Nigerians, but investors should still treat the IPO as a market investment and carefully consider the risks before committing their funds.
